Focusing on Latino-connected music and composers ¡Adelante! is also a bridge-builder to future generations of musicians from our area. The Latin American Suite by Portland-based composer Freddy Vilches is a composition that features rhythms and musical traditions from five regions in Latin America, featuring traditional instruments for each region. Exuberant and lively, we are thrilled to feature not only our own Principal flutist Adam Eccleston, but young students from Bravo Music & Arts Academy, trained in the vaunted El Sistema (the system) program in the final concert of this stellar season!

WMP’s electrifying season finale ‘Music of the Americas’ features a splendid array of music from North, Central and South America. Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón’s (currently based in Brooklyn, New York) work has been described as “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative". Her piece Tornasol (Spanish for sunflower) is a work that focuses on the vibrancy of color and how it changes through scientific experimentation, all portrayed in various sections of the orchestra. In contrast, guest artist Colin Davin will perform Concierto del Sur, a masterpiece for guitar and orchestra by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. The second half of the program includes music that is lively, rhythmic, and exciting. El Salón México by Aaron Copland depicts scenes and imagery from his experience at a popular dance hall in Mexico City. Four Dance Episodes from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet La Estancia incorporates Argentinian folk music that represent dance, character, and settings of life on the ranch. We conclude the program with Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez – a seductive, yet melancholy and irresistible ballroom dance inspired by the Cuban Habanera performed by full orchestra.

Big and teaming with life, our season finale reaches for peaks. The fandango, a popular Spanish dance style, finds new life in Márquez’s lively violin concerto, which, from its inception, has been tied to one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, Anne Akiko Meyers. Aaron Copland’s final and monumental Symphony No. 3, which he began writing in a Mexican village in the 1930s, incorporates his famous Fanfare for the Common Man—and Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico reflects on the speed at which our lives move.

In this BIG year for your SCSO, we invite you to join us for our 15th Anniversary Gala, celebrating fifteen years of extraordinary music-making!  This powerful program features works by Tchaikovsky, Marquez, Marshall, along with a world premiere from SCSO favorite, Kevin Wilt.  The concert opens with Christopher Marshall’s Aue!, a work commissioned by the SCSO for our 10th Anniversary.  For three years, New Zealander Christopher Marshall lived in the idyllic surroundings of Samoa, and his piece conjures up its endlessly fascinating atmosphere and sounds, its hypnotic languor, and popular dances.  The SCSO’s commitment to new music is on full display when they present the world premiere of Kevin Wilt’s Imagined Adventures: March at the West River, a short and thrilling work based on childhood fantasies.  Composed in 2005, Marquez’s Conga del Fuego is a short fiery work bursting with color.  The program closes with a monumental masterwork and favorite of Aaron’s. From the staggering genius of Russia’s most famous Romantic comes a symphony charged with raw power and gorgeous melodies. With the foreboding opening theme of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, listeners are launched into a four-movement exploration of fate.  Selected youth musicians will perform side-by-side with their professional SCSO counterparts in this incredible program.

You’ve heard of the three “B”s (Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms). Well, how about the three “M”s: Arturo Márquez, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Gustav Mahler! This fantastic 2023–2024 season comes to a rousing conclusion with the help of international conducting sensation Tatsuya Shimono and San Jose’s own Van Cliburn Gold Medalist, Jon Nakamatsu.

Savor Tchaikovsky's haunting Symphony Pathétique, named for the French word for dramatic or moving. With soaring melodies and orchestral might, the Tchaikovsky Sixth always brings down the house. Also, the internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Anne Akiko Meyers joins the Grant Park Orchestra for the Latin dance-inspired Fandango by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. And guest conductor Ludovic Morlot presents Color Shape Transmission by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, based on the legendary stories of One Thousand and One Nights, is a wild ride full of big moments for brass plus a famous violin solo for CSO Concertmaster Stefani Matsuo. Arturo Márquez’ Fandango pays tribute to dances of Mexico, performed here by Anne Akiko Meyers, the soloist it was written for. Yuzo Toyama’s Rhapsody centers on folk songs from his native Japan.
