A shared love of Mozart brought Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Gábor Takács-Nagy together and led to a long and brilliant collaboration. They now come together for an exquisite program of Viennese classics, with Mozart at the center. His beloved Piano Concerto No. 21 earned its nickname when Bo Widerberg used the bittersweet second movement in the film Elvira Madigan.

When the young star conductor Christian Blex visited MSO in the fall of 2025, an immediate warm and creative energy sparked. Now, as he returns to build Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 8 with the orchestra, we are delighted to welcome him as principal guest conductor. The eternal lines of Bruckner’s Eighth seem to suspend time, gradually unfolding through tender passages toward a magnificent climax, where rattling trumpets and thundering timpani seize the listener with overwhelming force.

When Brahms was asked to compose something ceremonial for the University of Breslau, he surprisingly chose the students’ own songs as his themes. The cleverly sophisticated Academic Festival Overture was, of course, a triumph. Beethoven is also in a celebratory mood in Symphony No. 7. The multi-talented conductor Delyana Lazarova leads the orchestra with sure hands through exuberant dance rhythms and delightful surprises.

Beethoven 7

Brahms held great respect for his predecessors, especially Beethoven, and it would take many years and many crumpled manuscript pages before he dared to call himself a symphonist. On the path toward his symphonies he wrote Piano Concerto No. 1, which he described as “a small piano concerto with a simple scherzo,” though in reality it is a monumental work with a symphonic character. In the breathtaking solo part we encounter the piano virtuoso Nelson Goerner.
