The USC Percussion Group, led by faculty member Joe Pereira, presents an evening of contemporary percussion works as part of the California Festival.

This event features Alyssa Weinberg's Ember II (2018), Juri Seo's Wah (2014), Joseph Pereira's Mallet Quartet (2013 rev 2023) and George Crumb's final work, Kronos-Kryptos (2020). Named "Hidden Time – Hidden Treasures," the program transitions from three pieces of similar instrumentation to Crumb's explosive percussion quintet which treads the boundaries between nature and sound.

Every time you go to a percussion concert, the experience usually resonates beyond the normal concert hall boundaries and genres. Exploration of rhythm, sounds and color are limitless in this percussion world of music making. For this program we present works that have been written within the past ten years, three of them within the past five years. The first three pieces on the program all have a similar instrumentaion – all players playing the same setup of instruments, constantly developing and searching as one. The final piece on the program is believed to be Crumb’s final written work and we’re very excited to be able to present it here, as part of the California Festival. In comparison to the first half, it is a total explosion of instruments (almost 100) and color. Evoking an other-worldly experience, treading the line where nature meets sound in an endless exploration of time and color.

Experience the profound journey of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the baton of Gustavo Gimeno, presents "Tchaikovsky & Pereira." This series of performances, starting on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 8:00 PM, and continuing through the weekend, promises an evening filled with dramatic orchestral color, tumultuous emotions, and passionate themes of fate and triumph.

The program begins with Bernard Herrmann's suspenseful Suite from "Vertigo," a brass-filled suite of love and obsession from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film. The evening then transitions to a world premiere, as the LA Phil showcases one of its own, Principal Percussionist Matthew Howard, performing a new Percussion Concerto by Principal Timpanist and composer Joseph Pereira. This LA Phil commission promises to be a highlight, offering a unique showcase for percussion music by and for percussionists.

The climax of the evening is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece that embodies a profound journey through its dramatic orchestration and passionate themes. Under the guidance of Gustavo Gimeno, a percussionist-turned-conductor, the orchestra is set to bring this symphony to life, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all in attendance.

This event is part of the Thursday Evenings TH1 Series, which includes other notable concerts such as "Star Wars in Concert," "Schumann & Brahms," and "Yo-Yo Ma, Williams & Dudamel." Each performance is a testament to the LA Phil's commitment to delivering diverse and dynamic musical experiences.

Fate always finds a way! Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony opens with a fate motif in the woodwinds and low strings, making its way through the orchestra only to be interrupted by a rich and tender horn solo. The fate motif returns to meet its triumphant and dramatic brassy ending. Plus, a special performance of Joseph Pereira’s Percussion Concerto.
