Works by three eclectic composers comprise this afternoon’s programme. Paul Hindemith’s output was bewilderingly large, and the Kleine Kammermusik performed today finds him in neoclassical mood. Jacques Ibert also wrote much music across several genres, including for several French- and English-language films. Pianist Jean-Michel Damase had a much smaller output, but wrote several pieces for wind quintet.

Ruth Reinhardt, “an elegant, versatile and committed conductor in the search for expressive colors” (Scherzo), helms this program, which includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 —too often overlooked, this turbulent music turns storms to sunlight. The winds sparkle in Hindemith’s enduring Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber; this music was originally sketched as a ballet, and its four distinctive movements maintain a catchy sense of choreography. (Weber gets a chance to speak for himself at the top of the program, through the Overture to his fantastical opera Oberon.) Beethoven’s expressive Third Piano Concerto ranks as some of his finest music; Alessio Bax, whom Gramophone considers to be “clearly among the most remarkable young pianists now before the public,” opens with this gem.

The world premiere of Nico Muhly’s new Baroque-inspired Piano Concerto is surrounded by three other unmissable and underrated works of time-hopping, genre-swapping proto-postmodernism: the cerebral mischief of Paul Hindemith’s raucous Ragtime, based on a theme by J.S. Bach; Edward Elgar’s inventive transcription of Bach’s Fantasia & Fugue in C minor; and Hindemith’s Symphony Mathis der Maler. The last takes a 16th-century artist’s struggles against repression as the basis for a majestic symphonic triptych.

A tortured genius, Brahms was known for his serious and sombre style, but here we see a different side to the composer, as we’re treated to the whimsical and sun-drenched Serenade No.2. And, rumour has it we can thank Brahms for another work in today’s programme. Dvořák’s Wind Serenade – a fun and joyous celebration of the Czech folk tradition – was allegedly inspired by music the composer heard while on his way to visit, you guessed it, Johannes Brahms.

Let us serenade you with the melodies of Strauss’ Serenade, a short and sweet tribute to romance directly influenced by the composer’s grand predecessor, Mozart. The ode to lyricism continues with Holst’s Lyric Movement performed by Principal Viola Brant Bayless, who captures the depth and freedom of the piece. In a showcase of his instrumental prowess, Bayless follows with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 5—the viola pitted in a melancholy monologue against the rich, dark timbres of the wind instruments. Finally, descend into Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful Transfigured Night, directly inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem. This story tells of heartbreak and redemption as a woman confesses to her new partner that she is carrying another man’s child, yet he responds that their love will shape this child into one who is theirs. They embrace and continue their walk with a new transfigured perspective on life under the light of the moon and stars.

It's an evening of tributes, with brilliant composers borrowing tunes by other brilliant composers to cast a spell of musical delights. Guest conductor Eric Jacobsen returns after acclaimed appearances in 2023 to lead the Grant Park Orchestra in one of the all-time greatest hits of the piano world: Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, featuring the exciting rising-star virtuoso Clayton Stephenson. The concert opens with Ravel's tribute to the French Baroque, Le tombeau de Couperin, and closes with Paul Hindemith's barn-burning homage to Weber.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra trombonist and principal trombone of the Grand Teton Music Festival, Mulcahy has served as principal trombone of the Cologne Radio, Melbourne, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. Our side-by-side series continues with a series of chamber collaborations between Southbank Sinfonia and the Berkeley Ensemble. These two pieces - Hindemith's Kammermusik and Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks - represent two sides of a monumental coin: the approach of early 20th century composers to classical music. Hindemith is cautious and tactful, following the rules and doctrines laid out in the Baroque period: ordered, reserved, yet beautiful (a bit like the British countryside). Stravinsky, while paying homage to his elders, is sly, brash, and witty. Not to be missed.

The Weimar Republic’s urgent blend of desperate defiance and vast artistic possibility come together in this Ensemble Modern performance. It opens with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 1, a masterstroke of postmodernism. Erich Korngold’s hit suite from Much Ado About Nothing offers an early glimpse at his wildly successful partnership with Max Reinhardt, more than a decade before they fled Europe and made Hollywood history. Schoenberg’s Accompaniment to a Cinematographic Scene is—almost certainly intentionally—not so much a film “accompaniment” as it is a full-fledged main attraction. Igor Levit is “like no other pianist” (The New Yorker), and his profound programmatic choices make him “one of the essential artists of his generation” (The New York Times). The performance begins with a solo rendition of the Adagio from Gustav Mahler’s Tenth Symphony—a sparse, stunningly revealing interpretation that lays bare the heart of the movement. It forms an incredible contrast to Hindemith’s Suite “1922,” a percussive work of pianistic maximalism, rife with interpretive possibility. Liszt’s piano arrangements of the Beethoven symphonies have long been favorites of Levit’s, and in the second half of this concert he treats audiences to the transcendent third symphony, “Eroica.”

Led by Franz Welser-Möst, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Artis—Naples for a pair of momentous performances in Hayes Hall. This first program includes works by Hindemith, Strauss, Schönberg and Ravel. The second program features Mahler’s colossal Ninth Symphony, the final — and arguably the most significant — completed symphony of the composer’s career.

Experience the Vienna Philharmonic’s breathtaking range of color. The concert opens with Hindemith’s first composition for wind ensemble, which in 1926 helped establish him as one of Germany’s leading post-war composers. It is followed by the single-movement symphonic fantasy that Richard Strauss crafted from the “best parts” of his 1919 opera Die Frau ohne Schatten. In Schoenberg’s first 12-tone orchestral work—one of his most approachable—the composer showcases what Franz Welser-Möst calls “a new way of writing music in a purely musical way … without any influences from outside music.” The program closes with Ravel’s La Valse, a remarkably orchestrated work whose extra-musical significance is passionately debated.

Gramophone magazine extolled the recording as “one of the most charming and engaging debuts.” Her Cleveland premiere is not to be missed. Hindemith’s Mathis der Mahler is inspired by 16th-century painter Matthias Grünewald and his struggle for artistic freedom of expression in the repressive climate of his day — mirroring Hindemith’s own struggle as the Nazis attained power and repressed dissent.

Nokuthula Ngwenyama, inspired by the work of Carl Sagan and the interstellar greeting sent by the Arecibo Observatory in 1974, offers her possibility. As we say in Kansas, “Ad Astra per Aspera.”Mathis der Maler (Mathis the Painter) depicts an artist who retreats, spiritually wounded, from the turbulent world of contemporary politics into the timeless world of art. Does that sound like a story for our times? In this 1934 music, Hindemith responds to the art of a famous Renaissance altarpiece to convey his emotions about beauty and a rapidly changing world.

The exceptional young instrumentalists of the Kronberg Academy perform with one of the academy’s renowned professors: violist Tabea Zimmermann, recently appointed chair of the Hindemith Foundation. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, here performed by viola, piano, and cello, is one of the composer’s transcendent final works and a mainstay of the chamber music repertoire. Hindemith was a gifted violist as well as a highly innovative composer, and his fourth string quartet—a work of great contrasts—is arguably his most popular (though still a rare treat in concert). Korngold’s Piano Quintet is a lavish and idiosyncratic early work, composed at the height of his popularity in Germany.

Two strikingly contrasted Balanchine ballets compose this program. The Four Temperaments, a staple of the neoclassical Black & White repertory, changes moods, styles, and tempos as it emphasizes four different elements of the human psyche. Liebeslieder Walzer, danced to the Brahms songs of the title, performed by singers at the side of the stage, evokes a night of romantic magic as four couples move from formal ballroom dance to a mysterious nether realm where the couples’ untethered souls collide and tangle and unite.

Join us for an extraordinary evening of music as Sir Simon Rattle conducts the Bayerisches Landesjugendorchester (BLJO) and members of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (BRSO) in a special concert at the Munich Residence, Herkulessaal, on Sunday, 28 January 2024, at 7:00 pm. This unique performance, introduced at 5:45 pm, will showcase a program featuring Paul Hindemith's "Rag Time well-tempered," Arnold Schönberg's Piano Concerto, op. 42, and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D major.
