Titled Almost a Night at the Movies, the Wind Symphony presents music with direct and indirect connections to the music of the stage and screen. The concert opens with Icelandic musician Björk’s Overture from the movie Dancer in the Dark. Björk starred in the lead role as an immigrant factory worker who suffers from a degenerative eye condition and is saving for an operation to prevent her young son from suffering the same fate.

Beethoven chose E-flat major for his last piano concerto, the heroic key from his Eroica. This weighty classic, played here by the sensationally talented young pianist Justus Friedrich Eichorn from Weimar, who had already caused quite a stir, is correspondingly energetic, brilliant, and virtuosic. And before Hindemith sends his painterly hero from the time of the Peasants' War, who would later become the title character of his famous opera, through a turbulent life, cast in music and sadly too rarely heard, Mozart's Schürzenjäger takes the stage. The overture to "Don Giovanni" is a masterpiece in just a few minutes, a character study of the title character that is among the most artistic in operatic literature.

Paul Hindemith’s Symphonie Mathis der Maler is a riveting musical portrait of the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald, who ultimately abandoned his art to devote himself to his people’s political and military struggle for freedom. Ottorino Respighi’s brilliantly crafted four-movement tone poem, The Pines of Rome, paints a vivid musical picture of four settings around the perimeter of the Eternal City: the gardens of the Villa Borghese, the ancient Catacombs, the Janiculum hill, and the grandiose Appian Way.

This chamber concert takes the audience on an exciting journey through the world of violin sonatas, from the Classical period (Mozart, Beethoven) through the Romantic period (Brahms) to the modern era (Hindemith). It's interesting to observe how differently the composers handled the two instruments and their musical interplay, which was certainly also due to their personal relationships with the instrument: Mozart and Hindemith were also violinists themselves, while Beethoven and Brahms were pianists.

Although violin and cello are essentially siblings, there were no significant double concertos for these two instruments before Brahms. He actually only wrote one because he had two special artist colleagues in mind for whom he wanted to compose something: the famous violinist Joseph Joachim and the cellist Robert Hausmann. However, it was a complete success, and today the concerto is among the most popular and frequently performed of its kind. Completed unfinished - that's how one could also call Franz Schubert's Symphony in B minor, because even without the "missing" movements, it is a masterpiece. Moreover, it is full of secrets. To this day, it is not known why Schubert did not finish it, nor why a friend kept it locked away for 40 years. It is also unknown why Schubert wrote it in the key of B minor, which was unusual in his time. However, all of this does not diminish the work, on the contrary, with each listening one can discover something new and be amazed.

Under the heading "Time Machine", the 11th Philharmonic Concert as part of the Duisburg Philharmonic's "New Ways" project offers a journey back in time: The program refers to a concert that was played exactly 100 years ago as part of a music festival in the city of Duisburg. The "Concerto for Orchestra" by Paul Hindemith had its premiere there, conducted by the prominent General Music Director Paul Scheinpflug. Also on the program from 100 years ago: Beethoven's Violin Concerto and music by Rudi Stephan, who was one of the most promising young composers at the time before he died tragically young in the First World War. Instead of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Axel Kober has put his 4th Piano Concerto on the program, in which the young British pianist and rising star Isata Kanneh-Mason makes her debut with the orchestra. And as a musical tribute to the former General Music Director, there is also the "Shakespeare Overture" by Paul Scheinpflug. However, the concert is not just a reconstruction of Duisburg's rich musical history, but also a lively and critical examination of history: the music festival took place on the occasion of the "millennial celebration of the Rhineland", so it was definitely in a German-national context.

A hen, a swan, the nightingale and other birds come together here: Haydn had anything but poultry in mind when he wrote his Symphony No. 83, but because of the "cackling" theme in the second movement, a clever contemporary gave the work its famous nickname - "La poule". Hindemith, on the other hand, used some themes from folk songs in his viola concerto, including in the third movement. "Seid ihr nicht der Schwanendreher" is heard there - and the concerto already had its nickname. Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Un petit rien is also ornithological. The work, which was created as radio play music, consists of seven aphoristic movements that are clearly more than just "Ein kleine Nicht". Igor Stravinsky's symphonic poem Le chant du rossignol was based on his first opera The Nightingale, which is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. It will not only be incredibly good, but also magical – and with Elena Schwarz at the podium and violist Tabea Zimmermann, it will be another highlight of the anniversary season!

Known for its dramatic intensity, rich orchestration, and intricate vocal writing and blacklisted by the Nazi regime a month after its premiere, hear Hindemith’s robust symphony from his opera Mathis der Maler. The program opens with the west coast premiere of a new work commissioned by the Taki-Alsop Conducting Fellowship, written by Ukrainian composer Iryna Aleksiychuk.

Our honorary conductor Iván Fischer is a guarantee for unusual programmes. This time, he and the Konzerthausorchester will perform works by four composers who were ostracised and persecuted by the National Socialists and whose works shaped the avant-garde of the interwar period. Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler found their way to the United States via detours, but Erwin Schulhoff was interned in Prague, deported and died of tuberculosis in a camp in Bavaria.

The stage is set for our favourite organist, who is also in great demand on the international scene: In the last organ concert of this season, Christian Schmitt will play our large concert hall organ – accompanied by our solo flutist Daniela Koch and our deputy solo violist Branko Kabadaić. The concert begins with a fascinating etude for organ pedal, which Christian Schmitt premièred in Zurich in 2023 – and about which the composer Maximilian Schnaus writes: »The musical idea illuminates the peripheral areas of the organ sound and the peripheral areas of our perception.« Liszt studied Bach’s organ works and passions intensively, particularly during his time in Weimar – and his affection for this Baroque master found intimate expression in the Andante »Aus tiefer Not«, written in 1859. Paul Hindemith wrote this touching funeral music on a concert tour in London on 21 January 1936 within a few hours after King George V had died there on the previous day. Bach’s masterful Sonata in G major captivates with its skilful interweaving of voices between the two instruments. For César Franck, it was clear: »Mon orgue? – C'est un orchestre!« And that is exactly how his magnificent musical creations sound – including the »Grande pièce symphonique«, completed in 1862, which even bears the required orchestral gesture in its title. Tōru Takemitsu, the cosmopolitan and influential composer from Japan, created an almost revolutionary work in 1971 with his flute piece »Voice« – because the human voice is included here in an interesting way. To wrap things up, the concertino by Cécile Chaminade, written in 1902, impresses with its breathtaking virtuosity, passionate gestures, shimmering harmonies and yearning melodies.

The symphonic favorites featured on this program are what keep us coming back for more! Enjoy Ravel’s famous Boléro, a mesmerizing showcase for many of the instruments of the orchestra. Hindemith’s brilliant Symphonic Metamorphosis is his most well-known output and was immediately embraced by the public upon its premiere in 1944. Bloch’s glorious Schelomo: “Hebrew Rhapsody,” celebrates his Jewish heritage and features CSO principal cellist Luis Biava as soloist. Bizet’s exciting L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 is inspired by the folk dances of Provence.

Paul Hindemith’s "Symphonic Metamorphosis" will then showcase the orchestra's versatility, leading into the highlight of the evening, Sandoval’s own "Concerto for Trumpet No. 2." The concert concludes with a touching rendition of Rachmaninoff’s "Themes from Piano Concerto No. 2," arranged by Bob Barrett.

In search of the hidden biodiversity of Berlin’s cemeteries: Researchers Katharina and Parm von Oheimb explore the fascinating world of snails. Join the pair as they set off on the trail of the slimy molluscs to examine the peculiar habitat they have found between ivy-covered gravestones and mausoleums. Travel with them as they share insights into their research on the impressive biodiversity of tropical land snails. During the evening's journey, they will report on the endangered diversity of their favourite gastropods, and explain why these creatures are severely affected by the current extinction of species.

Carl Orff's Carmina Burana features the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus, Evansville Children's Choir, and three remarkable soloists performing one of the most popular choral-orchestral works of all time. The massive work of over 20 performers onstage includes O Fortuna, famous in popular culture, first introduced to mainstream media in the 1981 John Boorman film, Excalibur. The song has been used for dramatic effects in numerous films, including Glory, The Hunt for Red October, Natural Born Killers, The General's Daughter, and more

Farbe! 2015 gewann er den Münchner ARD-Musikwettbewerb, und seine Karriere als Solist, Kammer- und Orchestermusiker nahm ihren steilen Verlauf: Sébastian Jacot, 1987 in Genf geboren, war nach einer Zwischenstation im Leipziger Gewandhausorchester seit 2022 einer der beiden Solo-Flötisten der Berliner Philharmoniker. Bei uns brilliert er mit gleich zwei Konzerten - mit La Notte von Vivaldi, der darin nächtliche Geister weckt, sowie mit dem spielfreudigen Konzert des deutschen Spätromantikers Carl Reinecke. Am Pult: die 1988 in Saarbrücken geborene Dirigentin Ruth Reinhardt, die vor allem in den USA, aber auch in Europa schon große Karriere machte. Ganz nebenbei ist sie seit 2020 auch Saarlandbotschafterin. Brahms und Hindemith zählen zu ihren Favoriten. Und die dirigiert sie auch bei uns. This special additional performance of the Pro Arte Wind Quintet sees the return of Pro Arte to the Congregation Beth El in Sudbury features a variety of works by significant composers for the genre. This performance will be complemented by an additional performance at the Salon Series home venue: the Allen Center for Arts and Culture on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

Sergei Rachmaninoff, Paul Hindemith and Maurice Ravel lived through dramatic upheavals in Europe. Francesco Piemontesi is the soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Joana Mallwitz conducts Ravel’s La Valse and Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler.

A few months after the birth of his son Siegfried, Richard Wagner composed the Siegfried-Idyll with which David Afkham and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart open this symphony concert. It was premiered as a birthday present for his wife Cosima in the stairwell of their villa in Tribschen. Wagner noted in the score: "Tribschen idyll with Fidi birdsong and orange sunrise." Anton Bruckner, eleven years his junior, was a great admirer of Wagner. His Fourth Symphony, which he gave the nickname "Romantic", was his long-awaited breakthrough. Shifting between dreamy passages and waves of dramatic intensification, it heads towards a radiant finale.
