Members of the Dover Quartet join other Festival artists in the youthfully exuberant, Classical-era Sonata a quattro No. 1, written by Rossini when he was 12 years old, and Brahms’s sweeping String Sextet in G Major. Between the two works, the Festival presents the US premiere of a commissioned quintet by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, who Gramophone notes “[fuses] jazz and classical idioms” and “draws on her Lapland roots and on the mystery and melancholy of life in the north.”

Violinist Ida Kavafian, violist Steven Tenenbom, and cellist Eric Kim play an early work by Beethoven—the seminal String Trio in C Minor—and violinist John Storgårds and pianist Katia Skanavi join all three musicians for the Festival’s first presentation of Weinberg’s haunting Piano Quintet, a rarely performed masterpiece that stands as one of the great piano quintets of the 20th century.

The world premiere of a Festival-commissioned work by composer Xinyang Wang, who draws equal inspiration from classical music and traditional Chinese arts, opens this program, which also features clarinetist Todd Levy in Academy Award–winning composer Bernard Herrmann’s quintet Souvenirs de Voyage, a cinematic journey through England, Ireland, and Italy.

No series featuring the music of Bach would be complete without his music for voice. Collaborating with the Savannah VOICE Festival to present Mark Delavan (who played Gianni Schicchi in the collaborative Puccini production at SMF 2015), the Bach Cantata in the first half is contrasted by a second half of songs by Copland and Weill. How interesting would it have been for Bach to have sat in the audience to hear the songs by Copland and Kurt Weill and to see his response?

Some 200 years after Bach’s death, 20th Century composers were still heavily inspired by the Baroque Era and the compositional techniques used (fugue, counterpoint, etc.), Stravinsky being one such composer. The fact that this will unquestionably still be the case in 2050, makes Bach’s music an eternal inspiration.

This concert features two composers that were most definitely not influenced by JS Bach, and in the case of Tchaikovsky, Bach’s music was very much “back and beyond.” Although he acknowledged his technical skills, he in no way regarded Bach as a musical legend.

The expressive splendor that Messiaen drew from his religious mysticism and devotion to nature is on full display in his epic 12-movement work From the Canyons to the Stars. In one of our most powerful musical offerings of the season, conductor Alan Gilbert leads a star-studded performance that features an ensemble of 40 musicians and four soloists: pianist Kirill Gerstein, Berlin Philharmonic Principal Horn Stefan Dohr, New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Percussionist Daniel Druckman, and Metropolitan Opera Principal Percussionist Gregory Zuber. The remarkable work—inspired by the landscape of southwestern Utah—was written in celebration of the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence, and we offer it here, in celebration of our 50th season.

This thrilling program features music by Mozart; two world premieres, including a Festival-commissioned piano-and-winds quintet by Magnus Lindberg and an oboe quartet by Festival Artistic Director Marc Neikrug; and performances by Alan Gilbert, Berlin Philharmonic Principal Horn Stefan Dohr, members of the Escher String Quartet, and more.

Kirill Gerstein, one of the world’s most acclaimed pianists, joins forces with conductor Alan Gilbert and 21 Festival musicians to give the Festival’s first-ever performance of Ligeti’s magnificent Piano Concerto, a masterpiece of originality as witnessed in the composer’s treatment of rhythm, harmony, and more. The renowned pianist Juho Pohjonen joins a string quartet of musicians for Elgar’s late-Romantic Piano Quintet, known for its gorgeous second movement, and dazzling violinists Jennifer Frautschi and Jessica Lee open the program with duos by Bartók.

Alan Gilbert makes his first appearance of the season playing violin in Dvořák’s String Quintet in E-flat Major, which includes an additional viola (the composer’s own instrument) and dates from Dvořák’s time in America. The program also spotlights another 19th-century Czech composer, the cello virtuoso David Popper—whose exquisitely tender Requiem features the unusual scoring of three cellos and a piano—and it includes the wonderfully rich (thanks to its two cellos) String Quintet in F-sharp Minor by the early-20th-century German composer Walter Braunfels.

Dvořák String Quintet

This two-work program opens with Beethoven’s sophisticated and innovative Septet—an early composition that remained an inescapable hit throughout the composer’s lifetime—and it closes with Tchaikovsky’s blockbuster Piano Trio in A Minor, which, for this performance, spotlights the virtuosic talents of pianist Zoltán Fejérvári, violinist Chad Hoopes, and cellist Eric Kim.
