After "The Firebird" (2019) and "Mahler, the Echo of a Life" (2022), Lucas van Woerkum now turns his attention to Holst's "The Planets," a grand galactic epic that reflects the composer's fascination with space and astrology. For this new film, in which the tempos are perfectly synchronized with the performance by the OPRL musicians, the filmmaker has crafted a story that revisits the profound questions of humanity. The photographer Lucia, portrayed by the great Emma Thompson, is contacted from the beyond by her late husband Bruce (actor Greg Wise, known for "The Crown"). The mystery of life after death is depicted in the sumptuous and meticulous aesthetic typical of the Dutch artist.

Experience the full sounds of Pacific Chorale and Pacific Symphony in the world-class Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall! With emotional prayers, mesmerizing harmonies, and words of hope, three composers set religious texts to convey their message and inspire the listener to action. Sarah Kirkland Snider’s glorious and riveting Mass for the Endangered opens the program, inspired by the traditional Catholic Mass but focusing on our delicate relationships to the wildlife of our planet. The second half opens with Holst’s crystalline Psalm 148 and leads into Bernstein’s spirited and dynamic Chichester Psalms.

Tour the solar system with the symphony as we complete our 81st season of music! Holst’s masterwork features an immense orchestra performing the rage of Mars, the joy of Jupiter, and many others. Tames Alan connects this work to the time of its writing with stories and scenes of women in the upheaval and societal change during World War I.

We close our 80th Masterworks season with a return appearance from Melissa White, the HSO’s 2023-2024 Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence performing the soaring melodies of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. According to Carlos Simon, his intent for Amen! was “to re-create the musical experience of an African American Pentecostal church service that I enjoyed being part of while growing up in this denomination.” Each movement flows into the next to reflect the way the worship service flows. Inspired by the astrological characters of each planet, Holst’s The Planets bears the richness and emotional warmth of humanity, encapsulating the theme of the entire program bringing people together through the spirit of music.

The concert will be under the musical direction of Carlos Kalmar, with Christopher Bell leading the Grant Park Chorus. The event will also highlight performances by mezzo-soprano Lauren Decker, alongside the talented musicians of the Grant Park Orchestra.
