“If you haven't yet heard the Pavel Haas Quartet, buckle your seat belt,” wrote NPR after the quartet’s last appearance at Carnegie Hall. The most celebrated Czech string quartet of our time, which has been called “the world’s most exciting string quartet” by London’s The Times, now returns during the 2024 Year of Czech Music celebration. The ensemble performs an all-Czech program that opens with Josef Suk’s gorgeous Meditation on an Old Czech Hymn, “St. Wenceslas.” In honor of the bicentennial of Bedřich Smetana—the quintessential Czech composer who inspired the first Year of Czech Music in 1924—the quartet performs his autobiographical String Quartet No. 1, “From My Life.” The program closes with the gripping passion and longing of Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 2, “Intimate Letters.”

Now we hear a metamorphosis of the previous iterations which the Prazak Quartet commissioned - the songs accompanied by string quartet. If only Dvorak could hear them! It's Smetana's 200th birthday, so his second quartet. And we can't have Prazak without Janacek.

The young pianist Tom Zalmanov studied with Murray Perahia, Emmanuel Ax and Sir András Schiff at the Jerusalem Music Centre before coming to London, and is completing his Advanced Diploma. An avid chamber musician, Tom was invited by Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss to be a resident artist at Marlboro Music Festival in 2023 and 2024, and was also a Fellow at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute. His rich piano recital connects Janáček's paean to Moravian folk music with Debussy’s light-filled reflections, culminating in Schubert’s virtuosic homage to his hero, Beethoven: the exhilarating 'Wanderer' Fantasy.

»Yes, just love him, love him so much – but don’t forget that he achieved poetic freedom after years of study, go back to the foundation of his work, don’t prove his genius through the last symphony!« Schumann said this about Beethoven – and it is indeed the case that the Symphony No. 4, which Jakub Hrůša has chosen for this programme, is often treated somewhat like a Cinderella among the nine symphonies. Quite wrongly, because it is an equally masterful composition: it stands in B flat major, which is an expression of the »yearning for a better world« according to the symbolism of musical keys of a certain Mr Schubart, and is characterised by a friendly tone with many wonderful ideas. Our Chief Conductor combines it with an equally neglected piece from the pen of his beloved composer Dvořák. We will be playing the fascinating piano concerto together with the acclaimed pianist Daniil Trifonov: the wide-ranging work was premiered in Prague in 1878 and features a magnificent richness of deeply felt inspirations. We will first present the programme in Bamberg, but then also in Linz – and also travel to the birthplace of Jakub Hrůša, where we have something to celebrate: 1924 was the first time that the »Year of Czech Music« was celebrated. It goes without saying that we have to be there, and our luggage includes the two pieces that were played at the opening concert of the year-long festival in Brno – on the occasion of Josef Suk’s 50th birthday and Janáček’s 70th birthday. In other words, music by two more of our Chief Conductor’s favourite artists: The magnificent autobiographical tone poem »Zrání« and the sparkling orchestral rhapsody »Taras Bulba«.

»Wherever you go, go with all your heart.« True to this saying, we are travelling on winding paths again – after all, we are Bavaria’s cultural ambassadors in the world. It gives us great pleasure to be touring across Europe to distribute musical calling cards from our wide-ranging repertoire to audiences elsewhere – who may well be curious. Jakub Hrůša once said that he loves it when people »really come with an open heart and are open to experiencing something completely new – and then relate it to what they already know«. At the request of the exceptionally gifted pianist Daniil Trifonov, this time the tour takes us to numerous places in Central Europe, to concert halls that we haven't performed in for a long time. In our suitcases we bring those exciting works that we have presented to our esteemed Bamberg audience for a long time – and although we are now travelling around for a while, we will of course always return to our beloved »home port« on the Regnitz later on.

Gorgeous late-romantic soundscapes – featuring works by Josef Suk and Leoš Janáček, who are among Jakub Hrůša’s favourite composers. It is thus a matter of the heart for him to regularly introduce audiences to pieces by these fascinating composers that are still relatively unknown outside the Czech Republic. The captivating »Asrael« Symphony already delivered proof of how well this works – and Josef Suk is also being celebrated this year on the occasion of his 150th birthday with an imposing musical autobiography: the programme includes his tone poem »Zráni«, finished in 1917, revolving around human maturity and elevating love to the core aspiration of our existence. Even the conductor of the premiere was absolutely enthusiastic, as he is said to have kissed the score in front of the concert audience and exclaimed in honour of Smetana’s famous cycle: »A second fatherland!« Janáček’s grandiose work was composed at virtually the same time – the scoring of a story about a Cossack culminating in a marvellous apotheosis. Jakub Hrůša fell in love with this composition, as he explained in an interview: »'Taras Bulba' is at the centre of my musical life. I didn't choose it, it just so happened. It was the first work and I’m still in love with it.« The brilliant »Paganini Rhapsody« by Rachmaninov from 1934 – who once answered the question »What is music?« in his typically poetic language: »That which goes from heart to heart, love.« – is also an emotional companion to the two Bohemian pieces.

After an intermission, the ensemble will delve into the past with Leoš Janáček's "Idyll" (1878), offering a sequence of movements that range from the serene to the spirited, showcasing the ensemble's versatility and expressive depth.

Chinese pianist and Juilliard alum Xiaofu Ju makes his Zankel Hall debut with a performance that showcases his musical imagination. Inspired by the idea of Waldeinsamkeit, a romantic German term best translated to “the feeling of being alone in the woods,” works by Janáček, Robert Schumann, Debussy, and Liszt evoke the experience of solitude in the forest. With Louis Spohr's Notturno op. 34, a work dedicated to the court of Sondershausen returns to its destination. Here, Spohr continued the great tradition of harmony music in the royal city. By using percussion instruments, which had come to Europe as "Janissary music" during the Turkish wars, he also sets striking rhythmic accents. Then the strings take the floor. Leoš Janáček's seven-movement string suite "Idyla" impressively shows the fascination that the folk music of his homeland exerted on the 24-year-old. Dvořák echoes are no coincidence here, as Janáček had recently gotten to know and appreciate his colleague, who was 13 years older.

The Curtis Opera Theatre’s 2023–24 season concludes with Janáček’s masterpiece, The Cunning Little Vixen, one of the most powerful operatic works of the 20th century. Led by a plucky heroine, this poetic parable celebrates the cyclical nature of life and death as it spins a comical yet bittersweet tale of Vixen Sharp Ears. Captured by a Forester, the mischievous young fox cub grows up to become a strong, independent vixen, escaping into the wild, where she encounters a forest full of possibilities. Janáček’s adaptation of the beloved Czech novella features a lushly orchestrated, folk-infused score bursting with boundless energy and an imaginative array of dazzling colors.

The allure of forbidden fruit is more powerful than societal conventions. Love can hurt, can make us laugh and cry—but it can also kill. The myriad emotions of love and hate are powerfully portrayed in this libretto and score by Leoš Janáček, who was himself torn by a very unconventional relationship with Kamila Stösslová.

After the success of Jenůfa, Janáček was drawn by the story of another tragic heroine: Káťa Kabanová, based on Alexander Ostrovsky's 1859 drama, The Storm. In an unhappy marriage, the emotionally needy Káťa succumbs to the young Boris, but under the weight of remorse, she confesses this betrayal to her husband. Her mother-in-law, the domineering Kabanicha, proposes a severe punishment—burial alive. A desperate Káťa ends her unfulfilled life in the Volga River.

Twelve of these musicians perform as the Regina Symphony Chamber Players, also known as the Core or RSCP. They perform in all of our mainstage performances as part of the orchestra, taking the spotlight as solo performers when needed and work together on choosing music for chamber concerts. When not playing with the RSO, these musicians are teachers, composers and performers who have made Regina the home base for themselves and their families.

Two brilliant artists come together as a chamber music duo for the first time on the Series: violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Kirill Gerstein join forces for a program featuring sonatas by Janáček, Bartók, and Brahms, as well as a work by György Kurtág. The program also includes a new piano suite by Thomas Adès based on his opera The Tempest; these artists premiered the work in Europe in 2022, and will give the Boston premiere of the suite at this concert.

Two of today’s most distinctive musical interpreters form a chamber-music dream duo. The program includes three major violin sonatas: Brahms’s third, Bartók’s second, and the sole surviving Janáček work of the form. Also included is György Kurtág’s Tre pezzi—a spacious work with careful interplay perfectly suited for the pair—and the New York premiere of a suite from Thomas Adès’s The Tempest. This new suite adds to Gerstein’s history as a champion of Adès’s, a collaboration that already includes “new music as technically exhilarating in its modern way as any disc of Chopin or Liszt” (Financial Times).

Escher String Quartet has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. Violinists Adam Barnett-Hart and Brendan Speltz have been residents in the Philip Dukes & Friends series for the past two seasons. For this season of SMF, the full quartet returns for their first featured appearance since 2021, welcoming Dukes to the stage.

Not only a composer but also a conductor and pianist, in this concert Thomas Adès showcases all three roles. Adès’ own Mazurkas were written for Emmanuel Ax, to celebrate the bicentenary of Chopin – modern, spiky and rhythmically fractured, it will be a special experience to hear them played by the composer. Janáček’s Concertino for piano and small ensemble was written in 1925 and two years later, he added a commentary to the work. He described the first movement as a ‘grumpy hedgehog’ and the second as a ‘fidgety squirrel’, the atmosphere of the third like a ‘night owl and other night animals’ and the last, ‘a fairy-tale, where everybody is arguing’. Benny Goodman, the ‘King of Swing’, was the inspiration behind Bartók’s Contrasts and the first performance was given by him, Goodman and the violinist Joseph Szigeti. The first dance is followed by a much more introspective, relaxed Pihenö, while the final movement is a frenzied, rhythmic whirlwind.

Eminent English conductor Sir Mark Elder returns to Symphony Hall for the first time since 2011 to lead a program full of whimsy, fantasy, and folklore. Opening the program, Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose ballet score began as a suite of children’s piano pieces, each movement illustrating an iconic tale. Next is the American premiere of Elena Langer’s The Dong with a Luminous Nose, a setting of Edward Lear’s delightful “nonsense poem” written for the BSO and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which gave the first performance in March 2023 featuring BSO principal cello Blaise Déjardin as soloist with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Antonín Dvořák’s The Noonday Witch is based on a much darker Czech folktale. Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s energetic, masterful Sinfonietta closes the concert.

Bespoke brings a fresh mixed repertory program with three ballets never-before-seen on the Wortham Theater stage. Continuing the long-standing commitment to bringing Jiří Kylián’s work to Houston, the program adds another of his works to the Company repertoire with the premiere of Overgrown Path. Set to the deeply moving score from composer Leoš Janáček, the work was created in 1980 for Nederlands Dance Theater in dedication to the legendary choreographer, Antony Tudor. Making its Houston Ballet debut, Stanton Welch’s Bespoke was created on San Francisco Ballet in 2018. Set to a series of Johann Sebastian Bach’s violin concertos, the ballet explores dancers’ love for their artform and the fleeting cycle of being a performer, with motifs of time present throughout the piece. Joining the two Houston premieres is Australian choreographer Tim Harbour’s rhythmic, fast-paced Filigree and Shadow. It takes the stage at the Company’s home theater for the first time, after its debut during the Hometown Tour following Hurricane Harvey in 2018.
