American conductor Dennis Russell Davies is the point of connection in this vibrant concert, which crosses continents and musical genres. The Principal Conductor of the Brno Philharmonic also has deep roots in jazz, having worked with luminaries such as Keith Jarrett and Dave Brubeck. The latter’s 1963 concerto for jazz quartet and orchestra, Brandenburg Gate Revisited, receives its first live UK performance with leading British pianist Freddy Kempf and a Czech jazz trio spinning sepia melodies around a subtly noir orchestral accompaniment. Freddy also takes the lead in Gershwin’s Variations on I Got Rhythm, a sprightly showpiece exploring similar terrain to his famous Rhapsody in Blue.

Leoš Janáček, a Moravian born in the small town of Hukvaldy, amidst vast forests and mountains, is known for his unique musical language. His String Suite from 1877 is his first orchestral work and combines Slavic Romanticism with Baroque influences. Therefore, the music perfectly complements the preludes by Dmitri Shostakovich, which are also performed and pay tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach.

She grows up on a forester's farm, surrounded by pestering children, a misunderstood dachshund, and a flock of chickens whose eagerness to serve only further encourages the vixen to give in to her hunting instinct. After escaping to freedom, she encounters a fox, with whom she starts a family—not without some forest dwellers commenting indignantly on the young couple's courtship. But in the forest, not only fox and badger, but sometimes also forester and schoolmaster say "good night" to each other when they meet on their way back from the pub. And when the paths of humans and animals cross, the animals often come out on the short end...

This performance is a highlight of the 2024-25 season, showcasing the ensemble's ongoing multiyear collaboration to perform Mozart’s piano concertos, a series that has captivated Berkeley audiences with its exploration of musical drama, form, and ensemble interplay.

Mitsuko Uchida, a revered figure in the world of classical music and known for her deep connection with Mozart's works, will bring her unparalleled interpretation to two of Mozart's piano concertos: the Piano Concerto in B-flat major, K. 456, and the Piano Concerto in C major, K. 467. These pieces, celebrated for their depth and variety, are considered by Uchida as instrumental operas, offering a unique blend of conversation, happiness, joy, sorrow, and life. The program will also feature "Mládí" by Janáček, adding a contrasting texture to the evening's repertoire.

This performance is not only a testament to Uchida's lifelong dedication to Mozart's music but also an opportunity for audiences to experience the joy and complexity of these masterpieces live. Janacek’s beloved Mladi (‘Youth’) was written towards the end of his life as a nostalgic celebration of memories of his youth, drawing on his early writing. Receiving its premiere performances in autumn 1924, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of this iconic piece for wind, featuring the bass clarinet alongside a regular wind quintet line-up of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Also featured in this concert is Janacek’s expressive masterpiece for solo piano ‘In the Mists’ and two works from wind and piano by his most illustrious student, Pavel Haas.
