170 years after Leoš Janáček's birth in 1854, Lisa Moore presents the composer’s three major works for piano, while centering her program around early 20th century music inspired by imagery and features of the natural world, life cycles and humanity. The concert includes the New York premiere of Meadow Bridgham’s Seventeen Years – the life cycle of a cicada – celebrating this insect's 2024 rare double brood.

Dvorak's Cypresses for String Quartet and mezzo-soprano anchor this program. The piece began as a song cycle for soprano and piano. Dvorak then transcribed the music for string quartet alone. Now we hear a metamorphosis of the previous iterations which the Prazak Quartet commissioned - the songs accompanied by string quartet. If only Dvorak could hear them! It's Smetana's 200th birthday, so his second quartet. And we can't have Prazak without Janacek.

The young pianist Tom Zalmanov studied with Murray Perahia, Emmanuel Ax and Sir András Schiff at the Jerusalem Music Centre before coming to London, and is completing his Advanced Diploma. An avid chamber musician, Tom was invited by Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss to be a resident artist at Marlboro Music Festival in 2023 and 2024, and was also a Fellow at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute. His rich piano recital connects Janáček's paean to Moravian folk music with Debussy’s light-filled reflections, culminating in Schubert’s virtuosic homage to his hero, Beethoven: the exhilarating 'Wanderer' Fantasy.

In this season-finale concert, violinist John Storgårds and pianist Kirill Gerstein play Janáček’s Violin Sonata, which is noted for both its urgency and lyricism, and, for the first time ever, Gerstein joins forces with the Dover Quartet for a performance of one of the standouts of the chamber music repertoire: Dvořák’s rousing Piano Quintet, Op. 81. The modal harmonies and improvisational feel of Janáček’s sonata coupled with the dumka and Bohemian dances in Dvořák’s quintet offers an invigorating taste of the folk music these two composers brought from their shared homeland and onto the international concert stage.

After an intermission, the ensemble will delve into the past with Leoš Janáček's "Idyll" (1878), offering a sequence of movements that range from the serene to the spirited, showcasing the ensemble's versatility and expressive depth.

Chinese pianist and Juilliard alum Xiaofu Ju makes his Zankel Hall debut with a performance that showcases his musical imagination. Inspired by the idea of Waldeinsamkeit, a romantic German term best translated to “the feeling of being alone in the woods,” works by Janáček, Robert Schumann, Debussy, and Liszt evoke the experience of solitude in the forest. Endorsed by Ms. Qianci Liu, the performance aims to strengthen the musical and cultural exchange between the US and China.

The Curtis Opera Theatre’s 2023–24 season concludes with Janáček’s masterpiece, The Cunning Little Vixen, one of the most powerful operatic works of the 20th century. Led by a plucky heroine, this poetic parable celebrates the cyclical nature of life and death as it spins a comical yet bittersweet tale of Vixen Sharp Ears. Captured by a Forester, the mischievous young fox cub grows up to become a strong, independent vixen, escaping into the wild, where she encounters a forest full of possibilities. Janáček’s adaptation of the beloved Czech novella features a lushly orchestrated, folk-infused score bursting with boundless energy and an imaginative array of dazzling colors.

The allure of forbidden fruit is more powerful than societal conventions. Love can hurt, can make us laugh and cry—but it can also kill. The myriad emotions of love and hate are powerfully portrayed in this libretto and score by Leoš Janáček, who was himself torn by a very unconventional relationship with Kamila Stösslová.

After the success of Jenůfa, Janáček was drawn by the story of another tragic heroine: Káťa Kabanová, based on Alexander Ostrovsky's 1859 drama, The Storm. In an unhappy marriage, the emotionally needy Káťa succumbs to the young Boris, but under the weight of remorse, she confesses this betrayal to her husband. Her mother-in-law, the domineering Kabanicha, proposes a severe punishment—burial alive. A desperate Káťa ends her unfulfilled life in the Volga River.

Two brilliant artists come together as a chamber music duo for the first time on the Series: violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Kirill Gerstein join forces for a program featuring sonatas by Janáček, Bartók, and Brahms, as well as a work by György Kurtág. The program also includes a new piano suite by Thomas Adès based on his opera The Tempest; these artists premiered the work in Europe in 2022, and will give the Boston premiere of the suite at this concert.

Two of today’s most distinctive musical interpreters form a chamber-music dream duo. The program includes three major violin sonatas: Brahms’s third, Bartók’s second, and the sole surviving Janáček work of the form. Also included is György Kurtág’s Tre pezzi—a spacious work with careful interplay perfectly suited for the pair—and the New York premiere of a suite from Thomas Adès’s The Tempest. This new suite adds to Gerstein’s history as a champion of Adès’s, a collaboration that already includes “new music as technically exhilarating in its modern way as any disc of Chopin or Liszt” (Financial Times).

Violinists Adam Barnett-Hart and Brendan Speltz have been residents in the Philip Dukes & Friends series for the past two seasons. For this season of SMF, the full quartet returns for their first featured appearance since 2021, welcoming Dukes to the stage.

Not only a composer but also a conductor and pianist, in this concert Thomas Adès showcases all three roles. Adès’ own Mazurkas were written for Emmanuel Ax, to celebrate the bicentenary of Chopin – modern, spiky and rhythmically fractured, it will be a special experience to hear them played by the composer. Janáček’s Concertino for piano and small ensemble was written in 1925 and two years later, he added a commentary to the work. He described the first movement as a ‘grumpy hedgehog’ and the second as a ‘fidgety squirrel’, the atmosphere of the third like a ‘night owl and other night animals’ and the last, ‘a fairy-tale, where everybody is arguing’. Benny Goodman, the ‘King of Swing’, was the inspiration behind Bartók’s Contrasts and the first performance was given by him, Goodman and the violinist Joseph Szigeti. The first dance is followed by a much more introspective, relaxed Pihenö, while the final movement is a frenzied, rhythmic whirlwind.

Eminent English conductor Sir Mark Elder returns to Symphony Hall for the first time since 2011 to lead a program full of whimsy, fantasy, and folklore. Opening the program, Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose ballet score began as a suite of children’s piano pieces, each movement illustrating an iconic tale. Next is the American premiere of Elena Langer’s The Dong with a Luminous Nose, a setting of Edward Lear’s delightful “nonsense poem” written for the BSO and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which gave the first performance in March 2023 featuring BSO principal cello Blaise Déjardin as soloist with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Antonín Dvořák’s The Noonday Witch is based on a much darker Czech folktale. Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s energetic, masterful Sinfonietta closes the concert.

Bespoke brings a fresh mixed repertory program with three ballets never-before-seen on the Wortham Theater stage. Continuing the long-standing commitment to bringing Jiří Kylián’s work to Houston, the program adds another of his works to the Company repertoire with the premiere of Overgrown Path. Set to the deeply moving score from composer Leoš Janáček, the work was created in 1980 for Nederlands Dance Theater in dedication to the legendary choreographer, Antony Tudor. Making its Houston Ballet debut, Stanton Welch’s Bespoke was created on San Francisco Ballet in 2018. Set to a series of Johann Sebastian Bach’s violin concertos, the ballet explores dancers’ love for their artform and the fleeting cycle of being a performer, with motifs of time present throughout the piece. Joining the two Houston premieres is Australian choreographer Tim Harbour’s rhythmic, fast-paced Filigree and Shadow. It takes the stage at the Company’s home theater for the first time, after its debut during the Hometown Tour following Hurricane Harvey in 2018.

The esteemed and popular Alexander String Quartet has enlivened SF Performances seasons for more than three decades, joined by Music Historian-in-Residence Robert Greenberg. Together they explore in music and words some of chamber music’s most intriguing and important composers, their works, lives, and times. Looking back to the early years of the last century, the Quartet and Greenberg will explore the rich history of bright innovation and creation during often dark times.

Join us for an unforgettable evening with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra as they present "MCO x YUja: Rhapsody in BRass" on the 25th of January, 2024, at the Congress in Innsbruck. This concert, scheduled to begin at 19:30, marks the first project featuring Yuja Wang as the MCO's Artistic Partner. 

The evening's programme is a celebration of musical diversity, featuring works by W. A. Mozart, L. Janáček, A. Dvořák, and G. Gershwin, including the iconic Rhapsody in Blue with Yuja Wang at the piano. This exploration of styles spans from Dvořák's lush and romantic Serenade to Janáček's modernist Capriccio, culminating in the jazz-infused melodies of Gershwin's masterpiece. 

Presented by Meisterkammerkonzerte Innsbruck, this concert promises a diverse musical experience, showcasing pieces that span different periods and musical aesthetics, performed entirely without a conductor. New World Symphony returns with another bucket-list concert to jump-start your new year. Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s life-affirming Ninth Symphony, a divine tour de force brought to life by award-winning soloists, full orchestra and the Master Chorale of South Florida. Continue your spiritual journey with an excerpt from the 2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Omar, a “melting pot inspired by bluegrass, hymns, spirituals and more” (The New York Times). The large brass section in Leoš Janáček’s Sinfonietta heralds one of NWS’ most anticipated concerts of the season. 

In this program specially curated by SPCO violinist Daria Adams, two autobiographical works by Czech composers Leoš Janáček and Bedřich Smetana look back to their pasts, exploring ideas of youth and homeland. Smetana’s From My Life — a self-described work of programmatic intimacy originally written for string quartet — is arranged here by Adams for a larger ensemble, showcasing the rich texture of the SPCO strings. Framed between the two works first born at the turn of the 20th century, Brazilian-American composer and singer Clarice Assad looks forward in a new work for voice and orchestra completed as part of her Sandbox Composer Residency.

A revelation to watch out for! Clément Lefebvre continues to enchant with a piano style that garners unanimous praise. The winner of the 2019 Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition, he is also the mastermind behind a splendid album of Couperin/Rameau (Diapason d'Or Discovery), followed by an equally refined Ravel recording. For his debut in Liège, he showcases his mastery of color in Debussy and Janáček, two masters of short forms that break away from romanticism. He also contrasts Chopin and Scriabin, demonstrating how the latter drew inspiration from the delicate fingerwork of the former in his youth.

In an ingenious chain of inspirations spanning 220 years, the Castalian String Quartet’s program—and the Turnage commission featured on it—mark the 100th anniversary of Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata quartet. For his new quartet, Turnage returned to words by the Beethoven sonata’s original dedicatee for inspiration. The Castalian Quartet are “a feisty group, with a real personality and strong interpretative ideas”.

Formed in 2011, the Castalian String Quartet has distinguished itself as one of today’s most dynamic young quartets. Appointed the inaugural Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the Oxford University Faculty of Music in 2021, it also received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2019 Young Artists Award.

Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian crafted his music with strong melodies, rich orchestration, and striking rhythms that bring to mind Rimsky-Korsakov or Mussorgsky. Gustavo Dudamel leads an exploration of Khachaturian’s distinct voice first with a suite from his ballet Spartacus—featuring the stirring Adagio—followed by the intense and heroic Piano Concerto with the help of Jean-Yves Thibaudet. After the U.S. premiere of Thomas Adès’ fanfare honoring Frank Gehry, Dudamel conducts Janáček’s lyrical and intense Sinfonietta.

The Kreutzer Affair is an immersive theatrical concert program created by the Tesla Quartet with pianist David Kaplan, exploring how music was captured into words and then rebottled into music again.

The Tesla Quartet is known the world over for their “superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play, regardless of era, style, or technical demand” (International Review of Music). From cutting edge contemporary works to established masterpieces, the Tesla Quartet’s emotive and thoughtful interpretations reveal the ensemble’s deep commitment to the craft and to their ever expanding repertoire. The quartet recognizes the power of their platform to amplify underrepresented voices and to encourage the proliferation of an equitable and just future for society as well as a hospitable climate for posterity. The Tesla Quartet is Ross Snyder (violin), Michelle Lie (violin), Edwin Kaplan (viola), and Austin Fisher (cello).

We explore the rich and seemingly limitless variety of music for string orchestra in a program revealing the Transatlantic influence of American music—both Negro Spiritual and Jazz—on Frederick Delius and Nikolas Kapustin respectively. Contemporary British master Thomas Adès’ spellbinding sonic miniature and Janácek’s lushly tuneful early opus complete the program.

As a champion for young composers, Adès requested the LA Philharmonic commission William Marsey – the result is his Man With Limp Wrist for wind and brass. Adès’ shimmering, translucent Märchentänze reunites the composer with violinist Anthony Marwood. Drawing on English folk sources, its third movement conjures an ecstatic exaltation of skylarks. In the final first of the evening, Adès will conduct the UK concert premiere of Purgatorio, from his critically acclaimed ballet Dante, before closing with a work he greatly admires, Janácek’s colossal Sinfonietta.
