Join us at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax for two exclusive performances on Friday, May 3, 2024, and Saturday, May 4, 2024, both starting at 7:30 pm.

This event will feature a stellar lineup of soloists, including soprano Miriam Khalil, mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, tenor Ernesto Ramirez, and baritone Jorell Williams. The Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus, alongside the Halifax Camerata Singers under the guidance of chorus master Joel Tranquilla, will also join to elevate the performance to new heights.

The program begins with T. Patrick Carrabré's "Just Society," setting the stage for the evening's highlight, Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. Known as Beethoven's last grand experiment and the pinnacle of western classical music, the Ninth Symphony is celebrated for its powerful message of hope, unity, and equality.

This performance is part of the Spotlight Series subscription and will proceed without an intermission, ensuring an immersive and uninterrupted musical journey. Ode to Joy: Holly Conducts Beethoven’s Ninth

 Charlie Parker’s Yardbird paints a portrait of the tortured jazzman, legendary saxophonist, and inventor of ‘bebop.’ As his soul lingers between life and death, Charlie (Martin Bakari) returns to his famous NYC jazz club, Birdland, and is challenged to compose a final masterpiece, all while pondering the inspirations, demons, and women who fueled his creative genius. Indianapolis-native and opera superstar Angela Brown debuted the role of Charlie’s mother, Addie Parker, and will reprise this powerful character for the Indiana premiere. Written by composer Daniel Schnyder with libretto by the late playwright Bridgette A. Wimberly, this 90-minute opera offers an unflinching portrayal of one man’s journey to redemption against a backdrop of the music, opioid crisis, and racial inequality of 1950s America.

Box Concerts excitingly makes its Toronto parks debut this summer. It features a rotating lineup of artists performing 30-minute mixed sets of classical opera repertoire, musical theatre, pop songs, and original Canadian compositions. Box Concerts began as a new way to present excellent opera performances in an accessible and community-focused way. For the past three summers, Box Concerts have delivered over 100 performances annually to the delight of over 3,000 Torontonians in long-term care homes, neighbourhoods, and other outdoor community spaces.
