The New Year is entering in high spirits and in the best of spirits – a very special one for the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra: June 1, 2026, marks the 80th anniversary of their founding. Over the decades, they have opened up the entire cosmos of great music to their audiences. The New Year's Concert offers something for everyone: the folkloric, the exhilarating, the romantic, the virtuosic. In the overture to his successful operetta The Merry Widow, Franz Lehár ignites a sparkling firework display of immortal hits. Keywords: Da geh' ich ins Maxim, Vilja-Lied, Ja, das Studium der Weiber (Yes, the Study of Women)… A top-class symphonic concertante piece is also on the program: the dazzling and joyful A minor Cello Concerto by the all-round genius Camille Saint-Saëns. Also appearing with us for the first time is the versatile and virtuoso cellist Bryan Cheng from Canada, a recipient of top competition awards. He's also the soloist in a romantic mood piece by Tchaikovsky. But don't worry: it won't stay too quiet! Happy New Year!

During the Twelfth Night weekend, Norrlandsoperan" class="css-u850">Norrlandsoperan opens its doors for a glittering, high-class opera gala with carefully selected treats for opera connoisseurs and beginners alike. Swedish rising star Rebecka Wallroth makes her debut at Norrlandsoperan and as the male counterpart we hear the well-known tenor Per Lindström.

The evening begins in the good spirit of La Scala with Italian splendor. Rebecka Wallroth sets the tone with the famous Rossini aria “Una voce poco fa” from The Barber of Seville followed by the duet “Un soave non so che” from Cinderella by the same composer. This is followed by another soprano number from the bel canto repertoire, this time from Bellini’s opera I Capuleti ei Montecchi . The first set is rounded off in grand style by Per Lindström with Puccini’s beloved tenor arias “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca and “Che gelida manina” from La Bohème.

With Franz Lehár, Viennese operetta experienced a noticeable upswing in the first decades of the 20th century. The new flowering of the genre, known as the “Silver Age,” is due not only to the extremely popular The Merry Widow , but also to Lehár’s late operettas from the 1920s and early 1930s, in which he consciously approached grand opera. These works are ambitious and sophisticated, and often feature prominent figures from cultural history, such as the “Devil’s Violinist” Niccolò Paganini or the “Poet Prince” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (in the operetta Friederike ). And with Giuditta , described as a “musical comedy,” he even celebrated a premiere at the Vienna State Opera. Melodic bliss and melancholy are combined in Lehár’s music in a fascinating way.

The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. Opera Classica Europa welcomes the new year with a top-class concert on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in the Alte Oper Frankfurt and will play the most beautiful melodies from opera and operetta, including "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz", "Lippen schweigen", "Das Wolgalied", "Casta Diva" and "Nessun Dorma".

Big names in the opera world, such as star soprano Elena Moșuc or world-class tenor Martin Muehle, who will be appearing at this New Year's concert, are not usually seen together on one evening. The overall winner of the 1st Opera Singing Competition in Honor of Romana Vaccaro, baritone Hongyu Chen and several other opera soloists will also be heard.

The band's farewell concert on this beautiful stage requires ravishing music and a fantastic soloist. The Danish opera star Brit-Tone Müllertz, who is world-renowned on the opera stage, will enchant the audience with arias from the most beloved works in opera and operetta literature. Livgarden's Music Corps will also deliver exuberant waltzes, tight marches and soft sounds from Baermann's Adagio with clarinetist Martin Kejser. The concert is led by conductor Giordano Bellincampi, who has served as artistic director of the Livgardens Music Corps during this period when Stærekassen has been the home of the music corps.

Since its inception in 2011, Art of the Piano has grown immensely over the years, in a variety of ways.  We started out in Cincinnati with a handful of applicants, which—to our delight—eventually blossomed to over 200 young pianists hoping to attend each year.

The concert opens with an overture of music from Lehár’s well-known 1905 operetta The Merry Widow, which was compiled in 1940 for the Vienna Philharmonic in celebration of the composer’s 70th birthday. This is followed by two dance pieces: Eduard Strauss’ train-themed polka Bahn frei!, and his brother Johann Jr.’s majestic Emperor Waltz, written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the crowning of Emperor Franz Josef.

- Lauren Hoffman ’19, flute, performing Martinů's Sonata for Flute and Piano, movement 3, under the guidance of instructors Barbara Mullens-Geier and Rachael Denny.
- Frank Watnick ’18, voice, delivering a heartfelt rendition of Lehár's Dein ist mein ganzes Herz from Das Land des Lächelns, taught by Mariné Ter-Kazaryan.
- Eddie Zhou ’22, violin, taking on Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53, with instruction from Rachael Denny, Aimée Kreston, and Andrew Cook.
- Erica Lee ’17, piano, interpreting Debussy's Prelude No. 5, Book II, Bruyères and Prelude from Pour le Piano, under the tutelage of Susan Svrček.
- Meleeah Abkarian ’10, voice, performing Massenet's Adieu notre petite table, also instructed by Mariné Ter-Kazaryan.
- Katelyn Vahala ’14, piano, showcasing her skills with guidance from Susan Svrček and Andrew Cook.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! The Merry Widow dances into our hearts with its beautiful melodies and witty storyline. Hanna Glawari is a vastly wealthy young widow from the small and poverty-stricken Balkan province of Pontevedro. Ambassador Baron Zeta is anxious that when Hanna re-marries, it is to a Pontevedrian and not a Frenchman, to keep her money in the country and save them all from ruin. J. Ernest Green conducts this bubbly delight while Jamie Offenbach and James M. Norman bring the light-hearted comedy to life. Starring as the merry widow is Alyson Cambridge (Toledo Opera’s Carmen) and BGSU voice professor Keith Phares as Count Danilo.

Called by Gramophone magazine as “America’s favorite mezzo,” and the New York Times as “an artist to treasure,” mezzo-soprano Susan Graham joins Maestro Gerard Schwarz and the Palm Beach Symphony to perform arias from Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro and Le Nozze di Figaro,” Lehár’s “The Merry Widow” and Berlioz’ “Les Troyens” as well as selections from The Great American Songbook. The program also features the Symphony performing Debussy’s sensual and evocative Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) and Shostakovich’s dramatic and powerful Symphony No. 10 in E Minor, Op. 93, created after Stalin’s death by the great composer whose career that Russian leader had nearly ended.
