Renowned for their collaborative spirit, the GRAMMY®-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra has played without a conductor since their inception, performing with “edge-of-the-seat intensity” and displaying an “infectious love for making music” (NY Times) for audiences around the world. Making his long-awaited Orpheus debut, violinist James Ehnes glamorizes the gorgeous French aesthetic in Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Chausson’s Poème. To honor his 150th birthday, a new commission brings Ravel’s Piano Trio in A Minor into the chamber orchestra repertoire. Composer and violist Jessica Meyer has a keen ear for ensemble color, and her friends in Orpheus are ready to dispatch her newly commissioned Cartes Postales.

Shostakovich wrote his brazen and bold Fifth Symphony in 1938 in a desperate attempt to secure some sense of safety in an unsafe world. A composer who was held hostage both artistically and literally, he created music that would fulfill the Soviet regime’s populist and “heroic” requirements and provide his political salvation. North State Symphony Principal Violist Leah Carl is featured in Forsyth’s hidden gem of a viola concerto with powerful soaring melodies that display the enormous versatility of the instrument.

Two of our 2023 Festival Artists, violist Edwin Kaplan and cellist Titilayo Ayangade, return to Newport as the innovative pair, Duo Kayo. Making bold statements in the classical music world, Duo Kayo challenges traditional thinking about the genre, serving as a vessel for new and exciting music. Surrounded by the beautiful art collection that is the Newport Art Museum, enjoy an interdisciplinary afternoon, featuring a diverse program of intriguing pieces, from Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto to Leonard Bernstein’s “Cool” from West Side Story. 2024 Festival Artists Jordan Bak and Jonathan Swensen join Kaplan and Ayangade for the final work by Paul Wiancko, Vox Petra.

From the piano, Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Carlos Simon leads a small ensemble in Requiem for the Enslaved. The program invokes African American spirituals and the form of a Catholic liturgical mass to tell the story of 272 enslaved people sold in 1838 to pay the debts of Georgetown University, where the composer serves as assistant professor of music.

ROCO's full chamber orchestra, under the baton of conductor Delyana Lazarova, presents "Supersonic," a high-energy concert featuring a dynamic and diverse program. This event is sponsored by the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation and promises an evening of exhilarating music and exceptional performances.

**Program Highlights:**

1. **Elfrida Andrée’s Symphony No. 2 in A Minor**  
   - A colorful and lyrical piece with an exuberant opening theme.

2. **Richard Danielpour’s Voci dal Purgatorio**  
   - U.S. premiere of the second movement from his Symphony in Three Movements, inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.

3. **Jessica Meyer’s Go Big or Go Home**  
   - A work celebrating self-realization and empowerment, featuring blues guitar phenom Clay Melton and his band.

4. **Franz Schubert’s Overture in the Italian Style, D. 591**  
   - Performed side-by-side with the Houston Youth Symphony, showcasing rich textures and emotional depth.

5. **Dobrinka Tabakova’s Fantasy Homage to Schubert**  
   - An alluring piece by the Bulgarian-British composer, known for her riveting and radiant sound world.

  Enjoy a night out while your children (ages 2 months to 10 years) are cared for by certified and bonded childcare professionals. The program offers up to 6 hours of childcare during the concert for $45 per child. Free, downloadable materials with themed activities will also be available for families to enjoy together while watching the livestream.

- **Wellness Walk with Urban Paths:**  
  Join a special free Wellness Walk preceding the concert. Participants will meet at 3:00 PM at The Church of St. John the Divine for a 90-minute guided walk, concluding in time for the concert at 5:00 PM. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today.

Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John has been described as "something of a phenomenon" by The Strad and a “high-powered soloist” by The New York Times.

She performs solo violin pieces composed by 12 leading composers, including Laurie Anderson, Valerie Coleman, Gabriela Lena Frank, and more.
