Following her hauntingly beautiful music theater performance in 2024’s A Song by Mahler, Jennifer Johnson Cano brings her “voluminous voice with remarkable agility” (Washington Post) back to PCMS. This performance with her husband, acclaimed collaborative pianist Christopher Cano, and St. Louis Symphony Principal Violist Beth Guterman Chu, features solo pieces, duos, and trios that highlight the eloquence and depth of the modern mid-range.

For the final piano-vocal recital of the season, husband-and-wife duo Jennifer Johnson Cano and Christopher Cano perform songs by 19th-century Romantic composers Bellini, Grieg, and Duparc as well as the 21st-century song cycle Nights Not Spent Alone, by leading English composer Jonathan Dove, whose text comes from poems by early-20th-century American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Jennifer Johnson Cano’s portrayal of Michele in the recent premiere of The Righteous at Santa Fe Opera earned her accolades from The New York Times, which noted how she “voluptuously captured” the pain and strength of her character; Opera Today called Ms. Cano’s arias in The Righteous “flawless combinations of radiant, poised, attractive singing invested with heartfelt delivery.”
