Philadelphia Chamber Music Society

Philadelphia, PA, United States

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society (PCMS) is a distinguished cultural institution dedicated to enriching the community through the shared experience and transformative impact of chamber music. Founded in 1986 by Anthony Checchia, PCMS has established itself as a prominent force in the classical music scene, not only in Philadelphia but also on a national scale. With a mission to make great repertoire and today's leading artists accessible to everyone, PCMS presents a varied season of 50-55 concerts annually, featuring world-renowned artists at affordable ticket prices. The Society's commitment to community engagement is evident in its provision of over 50 education programs and the distribution of more than 800 free student tickets each season, fostering the growth of new audiences and support for chamber music. Over the years, PCMS has presented more than 1,700 concerts, commissioned 60 new works, and premiered 100 world compositions, becoming a beacon for artistic excellence and innovation. The organization's annual 50-concert season showcases a rich diversity of programming, including eminent string quartets, renowned pianists, great string and woodwind recitalists, an acclaimed art song series, early music, new music, guitarists, and more. As a founding resident company of the Kimmel Center, PCMS holds 35 concerts in the Perelman Theater each year and collaborates with various cultural institutions such as the American Philosophical Society and the Musical Fund Society to extend its reach. These partnerships, along with the Society's commitment to affordable pricing, have opened doors to participation in the arts and built a strong sense of community among its audience members. PCMS has been lauded by critics for its unwavering focus on artists and repertoire, with the scale and quality of its series considered unparalleled in the country. The organization's success is attributed to its scope, vision, and dedication to marrying intellectualism with old-fashioned musical enjoyment. Patrons of PCMS often describe the Society as a family, noting the intimate concert settings and the personal nature of the experience. The Society's efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment have been acknowledged by its audience, who feel profoundly connected to the performers, the music, and each other during concerts. In conclusion, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society stands as a testament to the power of music to bring people together and to the enduring value of chamber music as a vital part of cultural life in Philadelphia and beyond.
