As the May Festival enters a new era of artistic innovation and collaboration, it seems only fitting to begin the 2024 Festival with a work symbolizing creation. Few works of sacred music are more cheerful and joyous than Haydn's The Creation. It exemplifies Haydn’s own personal faith and optimism in humanity, as well as his profound belief in music’s ability to edify, uplift and inspire. Through the inspired use of soloists, full chorus and orchestra, The Creation depicts and celebrates the creation of the earth, and all of its flora and fauna, as narrated in Biblical passages from Genesis and Psalms, as well as from John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Music Director Jaap van Zweden conducts Mozart’s timeless Requiem, a work of great poignance and emotional depth. Also on the program is Sofia Gubaidulina’s eerie Viola Concerto featuring soloist Antoine Tamestit. The composer famously said, “The peculiar mysteriousness and veiled quality of the viola’s timbre has always been something of an acoustic enigma to me, and an object of rapture.”

Tenor and 2023-24 Kaufman Music Center Artist-in-Residence Nicholas Phan is hailed as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers” (Boston Globe), “one of the most beautiful young lyric voices around” (Opera News) and “an artist who must be heard” (NPR). He’ll join the “sonically delightful and expressively compelling” (The Strad) Jasper Strong Quartet and Grammy-nominated pianist Myra Huang for an evening of art song across eras and featuring the world premiere of Vivian Fung’s Songs for a New Generation.
