Julius Eastman was a composer, pianist, singer, and provocateur who rejected rigid artistic and social boundaries. Black, gay, and unapologetically radical, he infused minimalism with raw energy, improvisation, and the pulse of Black American music. His 1974 work Femenine, which spent decades in obscurity before its recent reemergence, embodies his vision of music as alive, communal, and ever-changing.

Both composers shaped the concerto in distinct ways—Corelli through the concerto grosso, emphasizing interplay between soloists and ensemble, and Vivaldi through the rise of the virtuosic solo concerto that would dominate the 18th century.

Composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp during the brutal winter of 1940-41, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time was written for the instruments available—clarinet, violin, cello, and piano—and first performed by fellow prisoners before an audience of 400 inmates and guards.

A single performance of one of the Bach Brandenburg Concertos offers a glimpse into the composer’s ability to push the concerto form forward. Hearing the complete grouping of the six Brandenburgs together offers an understanding of just how substantial Bach’s innovations were. The Brandenburg Concertos were written after the composer met the Margrave of Brandenburg, whose court was known for a substantial musical establishment. Bach reworked some previous materials into a group titled “Six Concerts for Several Instruments” and sent them off to the Margrave for consideration in 1721. Later dubbed the Brandenburg Concertos, they do indeed employ several instruments, in movements designed to showcase the characteristics of each, in solos or as part of new pairings. The first includes a pair of horns, instruments associated mostly with hunting calls, in a solo group with three oboes, bassoon and violin. No. 2, provides a challenging turn for solo trumpet along with flute, oboe, and violin. The third is a string concerto for three trios of violin, viola, and cello. Two flutes and solo violin are highlighted in Concerto No. 4, while No. 5 brings the harpsichord forward as a solo instrument, one of the first occasions the instrument had stepped away from a continuo role. No. 6 excludes violins altogether to focus on the voices of lower strings. The Margrave’s reaction to this enthusiastic offering is unknown, as there is no evidence that he responded to Bach’s submission or that the works were performed at his court.

Caramoor’s 80th Season begins with a performance of Beethoven’s enduring, iconic Symphony No. 9, led by the enthralling Venezualan conductor Rafael Payare in his Caramoor debut. Four rising star soloists join a stellar hand-picked chorus; its awe-inspiring final movement “Ode to Joy” is an enduring testament to the power of unity and the human spirit.

Bach specialist Angela Hewitt is conductor and piano soloist in a program of works displaying the nimbleness and ingenuity of Bach, and his successor, Mozart, in composing concertos and chamber works that pushed musical boundaries. Bach has been the backbone of Hewitt’s career. She was immersed in his music through her father, a cathedral organist, and recalls, “I danced to Bach, sang Bach, played him on the violin and recorder . . . and in the end put all that experience into playing his music on the piano.” Her Hyperion recording of all the major keyboard works was hailed as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times) and she recently completed the Bach Odyssey, performing them in concerts worldwide. Hewitt leads from the keyboard in the D-minor and G-minor concertos.

During Bach’s composing years, French style and culture were highly influential in Germany, considered to add a refined touch to fashion, music, and more. So it is that French grace notes, like the rhythms of court dances, found their way into the music of a composer who never visited the country. Yet, as always, in his habit of exploring other genres and composers—he was known as a particular admirer of Couperin—Bach emerged as a distinctive voice. “What I call the French foam in Sebastian Bach’s music cannot—I must admit—be so readily lifted off that you can lay your hands on it. It is like ether: it permeates all, yet it is intangible,” German composer Karl Freidrich Zelter wrote in 1827, adding “his style is typically Bach, as is everything about him.”

Miloš Performs Joaquín Rodrigo

A Little Night Music was originally produced and directed on Broadway in 1973 by Harold Prince, garnering 12 Tony Award nominations and winning six Tony Awards including Best Musical. A Little Night Music is Sondheim’s eighth musical, featuring his widely beloved ballad “Send in the Clowns,” and is a musical adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 film Smiles of a Summer Night.

The Orchestra of St. Luke’s 2024 season draws to a soul-soothing close with an all-Brahms program of two choral masterpieces. Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie leads the combined forces of La Chapelle de Québec chamber choir and the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus in the Begräbnisgesang and Ein deutsches Requiem, featuring soloists Andrè Schuen and Erin Morley. While both works are sacred in word and tone, Brahms eschewed liturgical traditions in favor of more humanist expressions, and he explicitly referred to his requiem as “a human Requiem,” written to comfort the living. The Begräbnisgesang, written nearly ten years earlier, can almost be seen as its precursor. Taking the listener from intense grief to hopeful, peaceful conclusions, both pieces assure us that all lives continue in the memory of the living.

Since the day it was published on April 14, 1939, The Grapes of Wrath has captured the American imagination with its sweeping plot and epic scope – two elements that make it perfect for an opera. In the true spirit of Steinbeck, Gordon and Korie have fashioned “a people’s opera” whose orchestral score is laced with banjo, guitar, harmonica, saxophones, and barroom piano. Originally commissioned by Minnesota Opera, MasterVoices premiered the concert version in 2010. What better way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Artistic Director Ted Sperling’s tenure with MasterVoices than to revisit this gorgeous piece – which he brought to us – with fresh revisions, a new aria, and our signature casting of theater and opera stars? At its heart, GRAPES is a plea for political and spiritual unity that is as relevant today as the day it was penned.

With its enormous popularity matched by the huge numbers of musicians required to perform it, a Carmina Burana concert is always a major event and season highlight. Featuring some of the most recognizable music ever written in its opening and closing minutes, Carmina Burana is a thoroughly propulsive and sometimes explosive work that remains surprisingly approachable throughout. It returns to Carnegie Hall, courtesy of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Westminster Symphonic Choir, Young People’s Chorus of New York City, and several exceptional soloists.

Internationally renowned conductor Tito Muñoz makes his Carnegie Hall debut with Carmina Burana. In his return to the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the native New Yorker leads the Westminster Symphonic Choir and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City in a thrilling performance of Carl Orff’s most famous work. Carmina Burana takes the raucous, primal spirit of its medieval poetry text source and turns it into a bombastic, downright theatrical experience. All-star trio of soloists Ying Fang, Nicholas Phan, and Norman Garrett sing the roles of young lovers, a disgraced abbot, and even a sorrowful swan roasting on a spit. Children’s voices embody playful cupids, while robust choruses praise goddesses and lament the fickle nature of fate. With such a mighty crowd of musical forces behind it, this larger-than-life performance is not to be missed.

The evening begins with Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody No. 1 for Solo Violin. Renowned for her imaginative fusion of classical, folk, and jazz elements, the contemporary American composer and violinist has noted that Rhapsody was the first solo piece she wrote for herself, inspired by the works of Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. Captivating and wistful, the piece transports listeners through intricate melodies and expressive timbres.

Bernard Labadie conducts the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in Mozart’s dramatic 40th symphony—one of only two symphonies that Mozart wrote in a minor key. The esteemed German violinist Isabelle Faust makes her Orchestra of St. Luke’s debut with Brahms’s towering Violin Concerto, a thrilling work that, despite its technical demands, never sacrifices substance for flash. Faust’s “expressively searching and introspective” (The Guardian) interpretation allows listeners to experience the work in all its dynamic beauty.

Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s breathe fresh life into favorites by Mozart and Brahms. The passionate Symphony No. 40 in G Minor is a window into Mozart’s anguished final years of financial ruin, though with plenty of Mozartian light to balance out the darkness. Brahms wrote the Violin Concerto in D Major for his lifelong friend Joseph Joachim, one of the great violinists of the 19th century. It’s a perfect vehicle for guest violinist Isabelle Faust, whose understated virtuosity is well-suited to everything from the fireworks of its allegro movements to its graceful adagio. Faust brings to the stage a historically informed sensibility, staying true to the music’s original intent while infusing it with an elegant spirit that’s entirely her own.

Mozart 40 and Brahms' Violin Concerto

Unique among Mozart’s repertoire as one of his only two symphonies in a minor key, the Symphony No. 40 in G Minor is a window into the composer’s challenging final years before his death at age 35. The famous opening motif sets a tone of impassioned urgency for the entire piece, and is followed in subsequent movements by heartfelt moments of gentleness and comfort. In true Mozartian fashion, there is always light to balance the darkness.

The first African American woman to have her works performed by major orchestras, Florence Price, born in 1887, broke barriers at a time when classical music was dominated by white men. Trained at the New England Conservatory in Boston before moving to the midwest, she found success during the Chicago Black Renaissance, writing music that blended spirituals and folk tunes with classical forms. Though her work faded into relative obscurity after her death in 1953, the discovery of a significant cache of her compositions in 2009 brought about a revival of her work. This rekindling of interest has been driven by musicians like Cann, who, in 2016, performed the New York City premiere of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement, reigniting her legacy and underscoring her enduring impact on classical music.

Set during the Great Depression, Black Tuesday brings to life the valiant souls of the ’30s. With the backdrop of Shantytown, vaudevillians, pimps, doughboys, showgirls, and other characters populate the streets, portraying both its terrible effects of the era and the nation’s can-do spirit.

Resident Choreographer Lauren Lovette’s newest work Echo choreographed for the men of Taylor, with costumes by Zac Posen and lighting by Jim Ingalls, set to the mesmerizing sounds of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts’ Contact, which will be performed live on stage by the illustrious Grammy Award-winning trio, Time for Three.

New York’s “hometown band” opens a new season with familiar favorites and exciting guests in a spirited performance. Maestro Jahja Ling leads a royal charge with Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide before Lang Lang takes the stage for Saint-Saëns’s virtuosic second Piano Concerto. The orchestra rollicks through an exuberant interpretation of Kodály’s folksy Dances of Galánta, highlighting the talents of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble member and clarinet soloist Jon Manasse. Finally, Lang Lang brings his famously expressive presence to The Carnival of the Animals, for which he’s joined on piano by Gina Alice Redlinger. To accompany Saint-Saëns’s well-loved suite, which blends the sounds and movements of animals with quotes from fellow composers, we hear a unique poetic narration, written expressly for the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and handpicked by Lang Lang for the occasion.

An Evening with Lang Lang

Orchestra of St. Luke’s kicks off its 2023–2024 Carnegie Hall series in very special fashion, with pianists Lang Lang and Gina Alice Redlinger joining in an eclectic program conducted by Jahja Ling. The orchestra shines in the energetic overture to Rossini’s Semiramide and Kodály’s quintessentially Hungarian Dances of Galánta, while the piano takes center stage in works by Saint-Saëns. His virtuosic Second Piano Concerto, performed here by Lang Lang, is arguably his most popular, and Carnival of the Animals is one of the most constantly delightful works in the classical repertoire.

Before the summer season wanes, join maestro Roderick Cox – who has been praised as a conductor “paving the way” (NBC News) – as he leads Orchestra of St. Luke’s in a program that features cellist, MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner, and Evnin Rising Star alumna Alisa Weilerstein, who will entrance with her fearless rendition of Shostakovich’s profoundly complex and strikingly haunting first cello concerto.

Three emerging composers are given the task  to create a new composition based on poetry by a living poet under the guidance of Composer Mentor Anna Clyne. The Institute closes with a concert of the composers’ new works performed by Orchestra of St. Luke’s under conductor Brad Lubman at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music’s Cary Hall.

Conductor Yue Bao leads Orchestra of St. Luke’s in a program that includes works by Gabriela Lena Frank, Ravel, and Brahms. One of classical music’s most passionate and committed artists, pianist Hélène Grimaud takes on Ravel’s jaunty and virtuosic Piano Concerto in G Major.

With the release of Keep Your Courage, her 9th solo album, Merchant reminds us that courage comes from ‘cor,’ the Latin word for heart.
