Denmark’s NOVO Quartet, founded in 2018, won international plaudits by taking top prizes at the Geneva, Heidelberg, Carl Nielsen and Trondheim competitions. It joined the latest crop of BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists in 2025 and confirmed its status among the top rank of young ensembles with a superb debut recording of works by Shostakovich, Matias Vestergård and Nielsen. ‘The Novo have already made their mark in Scandinavia’, noted Gramophone. ‘Judging from this album, it won’t be long before they are doing the same in the rest of Europe and beyond.’

The extensive concert program presents itself with dazzling diversity and a variety of formats. The Zurich Opera Orchestra, in full force, will perform in seven Philharmonic Concerts, alternating between the Opera House and the Tonhalle. Internationally renowned soloists and guest conductors will dedicate themselves to major works from Beethoven to Strauss, as well as fascinating discoveries from the concert repertoire. A special highlight is the Prokofiev Cycle, created in collaboration with the Tonhalle Orchestra. Three concerts by the Orchestra La Scintilla on period instruments, as well as a series of gala and special concerts – including one with the Children's Opera Orchestra – further enrich the diverse offerings. The musicians of the Zurich Opera Orchestra can be heard in smaller, more intimate ensembles in the popular Chamber Concerts, held every Sunday morning and Monday evening. The Ensemble Opera Nova brings works from the late 20th and 21st centuries to the Studio Stage. The concert program is rounded off by the song recitals, in which some of the most beautiful and characteristic voices of our time can be heard.

The programme ranges from Gershwin’s Summertime and Piazzolla’s Buenos Aires to Hugo Alfvén’s The Herdmaiden’s Dance. The evening continues with Stravinsky’s The Firebird and concludes with Ravel’s Boléro, as the music gradually builds to a powerful crescendo. In 2026, we can once again open the doors to the international Carl Nielsen Competition; the competition where we both pay tribute to our great, world-class composer from Funen and the talented stars of tomorrow. Since its inception, the Carl Nielsen Competition has put Odense on the musical map, attracted some of the biggest names from abroad as judges and coaches, and a long list of the winners have become big guns on the international music scene. Now you will once again have the opportunity to see what the classical music world has to offer – and in 2026 it is the flute that is the protagonist of the competition. The competition offers three elimination rounds for the 24 hopeful talents who have made it through the eye of the needle before we can reveal the absolute winner of the competition. It will all be spiced up with community singing events, talks about music and Carl Nielsen and much more.

Having already conducted two hugely popular works from the symphonic canon this season – Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Bruckner's 7th Symphony – Stefan Blunier 's third guest appearance presents compositions we don't often encounter in concert. Dmitri Shostakovich may be one of the 20th century's most important composers, but with "Two Pieces by Domenico Scarlatti for Wind Orchestra" we experience him at the very beginning of his career, before he was banned by the Soviet cultural watchdogs. The program then features Paul Hindemith, ostracized by the Nazis, one of Duisburg-born Frank Peter Zimmermann 's favorite composers . His recording of Hindemith's Violin Concerto has even been praised in the music press as a new benchmark recording: a work that shows the composer less as a feared "public enemy," but rather exposes his accessible, lyrical side. The final movement of Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4 offers a spectacular "duel" between two timpani. Here, the horrors of the First World War resonate, to which the composer counters the "inextinguishable" in the hymn-like chorale at the end: the elemental will to live, as Nilsen himself interpreted the title.

Kensington Symphony Orchestra returns to Cadogan Hall to perform Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony (1922), likened by the composer to “the division of dark and light, the battle between evil and good”.

Alternately explosive and calm, the work features a famous battle between the orchestra and a snare drummer, who is instructed to improvise “as though determined at all costs to stop the progress of the orchestra”.

KSO is joined by former BBC Young Musician keyboard finalist Firoze Madon for Grieg’s much-loved Piano Concerto (1868), written when the composer was just 24. A lyrical Andante is bookended by a dramatic Allegro and an energetic Finale, both featuring motifs influenced by Norwegian folk music.

György Orbán's Quintet impresses with rhythmic drive and Hungarian temperament, while James MacMillan's "Untold" touches with its intensity and emotionality. In a tour of recent Nordic music, this concert offers several examples of composers who were inspired by elements from early modernism and neoclassicism and who at the same time held fast to their Nordic origins.

Both the Swedish Rosenberg and the Norwegian Sæverud and our own Carl Nielsen introduced modernist musical ideas into national romantic-based musical cultures. With Sæverud this is already visible in the titles, which refer to Norwegian folk music, and with Carl Nielsen this is heard through his creation of his own musical language, where he mixes Danish folk tunes and impressionism, of which his work “Pan and Syrinx” is a typical example.
