Few have conducted Carl Nielsen as much as our own honorary conductor Michael Schønwandt, and yet it is a new experience every time, because his interpretations are always exciting and far from predictable. The sixth symphony is rarely played, so a riveting experience awaits, where the composer's inner playboy really unfolds. The symphony was written by the mature Nielsen, but nevertheless leads the mind to the series of youth pictures in which Carl Nielsen twists his face and openly amuses himself with the photographer. The 6th Symphony is a charming and playful work that ranges from beautiful, singable melodies to the simple and naive to wild avant-garde.

Open, icy expanses, deep, dark forests and conflict. Welcome to a Nordic concert with the Odense Symphony Orchestra! This concert's program is composed of three masterpieces composed by three strong Nordic voices: Carl Nielsen from Denmark, Jean Sibelius from Finland and Anna Thorvaldsdóttir from Iceland. Sibelius' En Saga is a tone poem that does not have an actual story as its foundation, but describes a dark mood . The result is like a somewhat disturbing trip in a dark forest - with great and at the same time subtle music by the Finnish master. Archora by Anna Thorvaldsdottir is from 1922, and has almost immediately become a classic for orchestra. Like a glacier, the music rushes forward and along the way gives the audience a sense of infinity in space and time. As if everything that keeps us tied to the earth is cut away, leaving us floating in space. So does the beginning of Nielsen's 5th Symphony, but so much happens after the quietly swaying theme at the beginning that the ground connection is quickly found again. The 5th Symphony has a famous snare drum solo, where the percussionist in the score is almost asked to fight the rest of the orchestra, and even though the symphony was written against the background of war and conflict, there is, as always, indomitable energy and exuberant life with Carl Nielsen.

The overture to Nielsen’s joyful and exuberant opera Maskarade, is the perfect start to our celebrations, filled as it is with all the fun and drama of a masked ball. Despite being considered the ‘national opera’ of Denmark and acknowledged by Denmark’s Ministry of Culture in 2006 as one of the nation’s 12 greatest musical works, the piece is rarely performed outside of the composer’s home country.

A large orchestra of almost 90 musicians meets and plays works by Danish and German composers to celebrate 175 years of the Danish constitution and 75 years of the German constitution.

The Fehmarn Belt construction is progressing and Ensemble Storstrøm is creating musical connections with North German cultural institutions, youth orchestras and musicians in these years in order to meet for a common musical identity and to get to know each other better.

It is always with a very special pleasure that we present music by Carl Nielsen in our beautiful concert hall's Carl Nielsen Hall. And from the first chord kicks in, and Symphony No. 1 begins in “proud and cheerful” fashion (Nielsen loved obscure, Italian tempo designations – this one is “allegro orgoglioso”), we hear a 27-year-old, up-and-coming composer who has already solid take on the symphonic genre. He had begun work on the work while in the early 1890s on a grant-funded study tour around Europe and had become familiar with the "great music controversy", which required a young composer to decide whether he wanted to be "classicist" (like Brahms) or "new German" (like Wagner). And he had chosen a completely third path – of which the first symphony is unmistakable proof. Here there is an abundance of Danish tonal language, Beethovenian rhythmic processing of themes, and the special "progressive tonality" - ending in a different key than we started in - which also became one of Nielsen's hallmarks. Audiences widened their eyes when an unknown member of the second violin group stood and bowed after the premiere in 1894 – but once they found out who the elusive violinist was, he had to return and receive applause no less than three times.

The program includes a selection of works that pay homage to the Greek Muses by Dana Wilson, the Romanza, Op. 59 by Jan Koetsier, Carl Nielsen's Canto serioso, and the Concertino, Op. 45 by Lars-Erik Larsson.

Alexander Borodin worked as a scientist but he dreamed in music and his wonderful Second Symphony is exactly as stirring, as tuneful and as lush as you’d expect from the composer of the Polovtsian Dances – and it’s a real favourite of our Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze. Young Artist in Residence Johan Dalene, meanwhile, is crazy about the raw energy of Nielsen’s powerful Violin Concerto. We open with Ruth Gipps’ gorgeous instrumental Song for Orchestra with the oboe leading the way.

Often used to depict hauntings and Halloween, Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor opens the program, followed by Saint-Saëns’ glorified travelogue in his “Egyptian” piano concerto. Hear sounds of the Nile and other nods to the Middle East, played by the glamorously virtuosic Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is pleased to welcome Solti Award-winning conductor Keitaro Harada to lead this celestial celebration honoring the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. The evening begins with Nielsen’s Helios Overture, a day in the life of the sun. Later, Holst’s cosmic tour de force takes center stage. From powerful and commanding to eerie and ethereal, the work has served as a source of inspiration for composers like John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Midway through the concert, Richard Dowling performs Mozart’s exuberant Piano Concert No. 16.

“Music is life, and like it, it is inextinguishable.” With this declaration written at the top of his score, Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 pits the everlasting spirit of life against the horror of World War I with dramatic music leading to, what else, but a battle between two timpani! Making his CSO debut, conductor Ryan Bancroft opens this program with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade for Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, displaying the virtuosity of guest pianist Inon Barnatan, heralded by The New York Times as “one of the most admired pianists of his generation.”

Sarasota Orchestra’s wind and brass quintets take center stage in a program of masterpieces. Carl Nielsen had a fondness for nature and all “living, breathing things.” His wind quintet is a remarkable staple of the repertoire, highlighting the sounds and personalities of the individual instruments. Victor Ewald was an engineer with a special affinity for the brass family. His Quintet No. 3 showcases the performers’ prowess as it gifts a tuneful, Romantic-era gem to the audience.

The swelling ocean pounds rocky cliffs in this concert of Scandinavian greats. Ning Feng, a “wonderful player with a creamy, easy tone and an emotional honesty” (Washington Post), makes his long-awaited Seattle Symphony debut playing Sibelius’ ethereal Violin Concerto. Danish composer Carl Nielsen believed that music is life, and the will of life is “inextinguishable.” This idea inspired his rich and urgently expressive Fourth Symphony.

Finland and its culture dominate Symphony Hall in this concert. Finnish conductor John Storgårds leads the first in our Music of the Midnight Sun series, an exploration of Nordic storytelling and music. Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen’s vivid soundscapes prove she is a worthy successor to her compatriot Jean Sibelius; her nuanced and colorful Midnight Sun Variations that transport you to her homeland. Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto debuts with the BSO as the orchestra performs the great Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s 1911 Violin Concerto for the first time. The program closes with three of Sibelius’s tone poems based on Finnish legends, their moods ranging from sweeping power to contemplative mystery.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, hailed by The New Yorker as “a cellist of blazing sensitivity,” makes his CSO debut in Elgar’s rhapsodic Cello Concerto. Paavo Järvi conducts Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony, a visceral, dramatic work exploring humanity’s potential for conflict, born in the aftermath of World War I. Beethoven’s jubilant hymn to liberty opens the program.

The son of a modest tailor, guided by a sorcerer, discovers a magical lamp that brings him fortune. Aladdin is now part of our collective imagination, but who knows the colorful and enchanting music that the Danish composer Carl Nielsen offered to it in 1919? Fifteen years later, Serge Prokofiev composed the soundtrack for a Russian film that tells the comical story of a military officer in the Tsar's army, Lieutenant Kijé. This character, created entirely due to an administrative error, is forced to become credible in the eyes of the sovereign... Two fantastic stories come to life thanks to the OPRL, and with acrobatics performed by circus artists invited to the stage of the Salle Philharmonique!

Danish composer Carl Nielsen's "Aladdin" (1919) is a concentrated portrayal of the Orient in itself. Originally composed to accompany a play by dramatist Adam Oehlenschläger, its music captures all the magic of the Arabian Nights with its market scenes, exotic celebrations, and Indian, Chinese, or Moorish dances. It's like being in Isfahan... Anna Vinnitskaya, the first laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2007, brings all her elegance and agility to Rachmaninov's all too rare First Piano Concerto, composed when he was barely 18 years old but brimming with the melodic verve and ardor that characterize its creator.

Who would you most like to be: Aladdin with the wonderful lamp? Or the young warrior with the prospect of endless money? Look forward to a musical event about all the unattainable in the world. The music is by Carl Nielsen and Horneman and many other composers with music about dreams. The well-known notes are introduced in an entertaining way by Søren Schauser - nationally known from "Den klassik musikquiz" on DR2.

Be swept off your feet with a program of smoky romance and fiery virtuosity. Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann makes his Sarasota Orchestra debut in a program featuring Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2. Its passionate melodies and lush orchestration thread through well-known songs and movie scores today. Violinist Stella Chen, winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition, performs Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2. This showpiece is packed with soaring melodies, lively dances, and dazzling violin pyrotechnics. The program begins with the rousing overture to Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s opera Maskarade.

Fiery harmonies reveal 20th century sensibilities, where big climaxes alternate with haunting melodies, brass and percussion explosions with exquisite lyricism, tragedy with triumph, sweeping you towards the gripping conclusion. DSO Principal Flute David Buck solos in Nielsen’s Concerto, showcasing not just the flute, but also in dialogue with “fellow instruments.”

Nielsen’s Fourth Symphony, in his own words, expresses “the spirit of life or manifestations of life, that is: everything that moves, that wants to live … just life and motion…”. This incendiary work makes for a fitting conclusion to this programme, conducted by John Storgårds, which seeks to define the human spirit. Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, arising from conflict seeks to celebrate an unshakeable sense of optimism. These two pieces bookend two more introspective UK premieres, Michigan-born composer James Lee III’s Shades of Unbroken Dreams with pianist Alexandra Dariescu – a piano concerto marking the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s historic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech – and Helena’s Song arranged for violin and orchestra from Sebastian Fagerlund’s unnerving operatic family drama Autumn Sonata, performed tonight by our Chief Conductor play-directing from the podium.
