The flags of Finland and Denmark fly high with the Violin Concerto by Osmo Vänskä’s beloved late friend, Jaakko Kuusisto, and the last symphony by Carl Nielsen. At first, Nielsen thought it would be “completely idyllic” in character, a Sinfonia semplice. When it was finished 16 months later, he wasn’t sure the name still made sense. Come prepared to discover its complexities.
