In Ki moun ou ye, flutist, vocalist, and composer Nathalie Joachim takes us through an intimately staged song cycle that ponders the titular question: “Who are you?” Performed in both English and Haitian Kreyòl, the immersive work weaves a vibrant tapestry of Joachim’s live voice, and intricate electronically sampled vocal textures underscored by an acoustic instrumental ensemble.

In her immersive staged song cycle Ki moun ou ye (Who are you?), composer, flutist, and vocalist Nathalie Joachim invokes music, movement, and memory to explore personal history and the healing power of the voice. Performed in both English and Haitian Kreyòl, Ki moun ou ye travels deeper into the Haitian heritage introduced on Joachim’s Grammy-nominated Fanm d’Ayiti, and is set on the remote Caribbean farmland where her family has lived for generations. The music weaves together field recordings, electronic drones, vocals, and a seven-member chamber ensemble of winds, strings, and percussion. The evening-length work was developed as part of Joachim’s appointment as Creative Associate at Juilliard, and is a collaboration with fellow alum, choreographer Chanel DaSilva.

It’s always a party when Nobuyuki Tsujii sits in with Orpheus, especially when they revel in the shimmering virtuosity of Chopin. Instead of the usual orchestration that puts the ensemble deep in the background, a bespoke arrangement by Shuying Li lets the musicians of Orpheus be true partners. The raucous characters and grand spectacles of a Venetian Ball come roaring to life in Zachary Wadsworth’s update of Schumann’s beloved piano score, Carnaval. A new work from composer/flutist/vocalist Nathalie Joachim kicks off the festivities with a celebration of her Haitian culture.

An evening-length work for voice, flute, string quartet and electronics developed by Grammy-nominated composer/performer Nathalie Joachim, Fanm d’Ayiti is a celebration of some of Haiti’s most iconic yet under recognized female artists, as well as an exploration of Joachim’s Haitian heritage.

Fanm d’Ayiti, released in 2019 on New Amsterdam Records as Joachim’s first featured solo album, received a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album. The project features original songs incorporating the recorded voices of Joachim’s grandmother and the girls choir of her family’s home farming village of Dantan; new arrangements of songs by some of the greatest known female voices in Haitian history; and recorded interviews with these artists about their lives fighting for social justice and uplifting the people of Haiti.

Nathalie Joachim is a Grammy-nominated flutist, composer, and vocalist. The Brooklyn born Haitian-American artist is hailed for being “a fresh and invigorating cross-cultural voice”. (The Nation). She is co-founder of the critically acclaimed duo, Flutronix, and comfortably navigates everything from classical to indie-rock, all while advocating for social change and cultural awareness. Her authenticity has gained her the reputation of being “powerful and unpretentious.” (The New York Times).

Mandolin virtuoso and Festival Artistic Director Chris Thile closes out the 20th anniversary of the Laguna Beach Music Festival with a unique musical experience featuring vocalist and flutist Nathalie Joachim, award-winning violinist Tessa Lark, and virtuoso bassist Michael Thurber.  This program will begin with selections from Nathalie Joachim’s Fanm d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti), an evening-length work for voice, flute, string quartet and electronics. Fanm d’Ayiti is a celebration of some of Haiti’s most iconic yet under recognized female artists, as well as an exploration of Joachim’s Haitian heritage. The project features original songs incorporating the recorded voices of Joachim’s grandmother and the girls choir of her family’s home farming village of Dantan; new arrangements of songs by some of the greatest known female voices in Haitian history; and recorded interviews with these artists about their lives fighting for social justice and uplifting the people of Haiti.  The second half of the program will feature Tessa Lark, violin and Michael Thurber, double bass, with music from their new album Invention. Invention explores the Two-Part Inventions of J.S. Bach which illuminate the full expressive possibility for two musical voices. In the spirit of these Inventions, Lark and Thurber have 'invented' their own set of duos which will be performed alongside Bach’s works. Just as Bach's Inventions are explorations in counterpoint, these duos explore the full range of what is possible for their specific two voices: violin and bass.
