The American pianist Jonathan Biss is often highlighted as one of the foremost interpreters of Ludwig van Beethoven's music. In this concert we get to experience the youthful Second Piano Concerto. But first, Timo Andre's piano piece The Blind Banister written for Biss to perform as a pendang to Beethoven's Piano Concerto. The conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto also leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the American composer Missy Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) .

LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leads the orchestra in Stravinsky’s colorful and Impressionistic Song of the Nightingale, which is set in the court of the Emperor of China. With influences ranging from Brahms and Mozart to Sigur Rós and Radiohead, Timo Andres is a favorite young composer of Adams’ who conducts the world premiere of his concerto written for pianist Aaron Diehl. Adams closes the program with his City Noir, inspired by Los Angeles and classic films that the composer said is reminiscent of “a very crowded boulevard peopled with strange characters… who only come out very late on a very hot night.”

Based around Ravel’s Miroirs suite for solo piano, the program includes responses to the suite’s five movements in more contemporary repertoire. Chinese-American pianist George Xiaoyuan Fu has been praised as “one of the most exciting pianists of our time… a deep thinker, thoroughly in command” (The Arts Desk). Recently winning BBC Music Magazine’s 2024 Newcomer Award, he is establishing an international reputation as a fearless and probing interpreter of a wide array of music, combining “stunning virtuosity” (Boston Music Intelligencer) and “phenomenal technique with a profound sense of interpretative clarity” (Apple Music).

The former Czechoslovakia has always been a breeding ground for string players and string quartets, in particular. Great quartets pop up there like mushrooms, and they don't all stick together. The Pavel Haas is the one of their generation that exceeds all. Founded by first violin Veronika Jaruskova, she leads them with grace and ferocity. They will play their countryman Schulhoff's ironic, jazzy, early Five Pieces for String Quartet, written 20 years before his death in a Nazi prison in 1941. They will also play Martiniu, who isn't played enough outside his homeland - these are the right ambassadors. Of course, the Tchaikovsky is irresistible.
