With hit tunes, coloratura showstoppers, and battling countertenors, Rinaldo has something for everyone. Beethoven called Handel “the greatest composer that ever lived,” and works like the “Hallelujah Chorus” have cemented his place in history. But his dramatic genius was never more on display than in his over 40 operas, of which Rinaldo ranks as one of the greatest.

The Atlanta Opera’s acclaimed Discoveries series continues with The Anonymous Lover, an opera written in 1780 by the groundbreaking Black composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. A beautiful young widow begins receiving love letters from an anonymous source in this timeless comic love story. As she ponders the sender of these romantic overtures and wrestles with her own doubt of rediscovering love, her dear friend battles his own feelings of anxiety and yearning as the mysterious author of these notes of affection. True love is his goal, but time will tell if he finds his love requited.

In this magical tale filled with memorable melodies, our hero must save his innocent, true love from a sorcerer who will stop at nothing to gain victory. The opera sweeps the audience from laughter to heartbreak and back again in this enchanting musical fantasy where love triumphs over darkness.

Join us for Opera Santa Barbara’s first mainstage baroque opera!  Santa Barbara native, Jana McIntyre (Norina, Don Pasuale ’21) sings the title role, who is in love with the God, Jupiter, sung by Robert Stahley making his Opera Santa Barbara debut. Also making their company debuts are countertenor Logan Tanner in the role of Athamas, Semele’s mortal betrothed, and mezzo soprano Sarah Coit, singing the goddess Juno, the spurned wife of Jupiter. Director Sara E. Widzer (Carmen in your Car, ’20) returns to bring the escapades and foibles of both mortals and Gods alike to the Lobero stage in this production set in the roaring 20’s. This production will feature lighting design by Helena Kuukka and projections designed by Yuki Izumihara. Rounding out our creative team, Maestra Emily Senturia leads the Opera Santa Barbara Orchestra through this journey of love, lust, jealousy, and revenge!
