Jorma Elo's "Bach Cello Suites" combines classical foundations with contemporary flair, featuring ten dancers and a solo cellist in a breathtaking display of choreographic innovation. Lastly, Boston Ballet Artist My’Kal Stromile presents his mainstage debut with "Form and Gesture," a bold exploration of classical ballet movement reimagined for today's world.

Performances are scheduled from October 5th through October 15th, with evening shows at 7:30 pm and matinees at 1:30 pm. The event will take place at the prestigious Citizens Bank Opera House, ensuring an unforgettable experience in a venue known for its grandeur and elegance.

This remarkable concert series will take place on Thursday, February 29, 2024, and Friday, March 1, 2024, both performances starting at 8:00 pm, with an introduction at 6:45 pm.

The program promises an enchanting mix of French and Hungarian compositions, showcasing the talents of conductor Iván Fischer and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári. The evening will feature Ernst von Dohnányi's "Symphonische Minuten, op. 36" and "Variations on a Children’s Song for Piano and Orchestra," alongside Claude Debussy's "Printemps, Symphonic Suite," Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1" and "Gnossienne No. 3" in orchestral versions by Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc respectively, and Maurice Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2."

Iván Fischer, known for his innovative programming and universal musical approach, has been a highly esteemed guest conductor for the BRSO for many years. This concert series will highlight his dedication to both French repertoire and the works of his Hungarian compatriot, Ernst von Dohnányi, offering an evening full of wit, versatility, and virtuosity.

Unfortunately, due to a shoulder injury, Carsten Duffin will not be able to participate in these concerts. However, we are delighted to welcome Zoltán Fejérvári, an internationally acclaimed pianist known for his exceptional performances and recordings, as he takes on the highly virtuosic piano part of Dohnányi's variations.

Isabel Valasek is a soprano based in Pittsburgh, PA. She is studying under Sari Gruber at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance, a certification in Music Education and a minor in Drama. This year in Carnegie Mellon Opera, Isabel performed as Lucy in “The Telephone” by Menotti and will also be in scenes such as singing Adele in “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II, Lucy in "The Three Penny Opera" by Kurt Weill and Idamante in “Idomeneo” by Mozart. She was previously a soloist in Carnegie Mellon University’s fully staged production of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by Craig Hella Johnson and was a cover for Despina in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”.

Known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and for co-founding the Cubist movement, it is surprisingly little know that artist Pablo Picasso was heavily involved in the costume design for many ground breaking ballets.

Paris in the 1920s was a place of great artistic conflict and excitement. While some like Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso embraced Neo-Classicism and a "return to order" in the aftermath of the Great War, others launched bold new experiments. Under the leadership of André Breton, Surrealism sought to shock the bourgeoisie, while a passion for African and African American art and culture, from jazz to art to dance, galvanized the city, personified above all by Josephine Baker. Join PCE for a screening of the classic Surrealist film Entr’acte (René Clair, 1924) with the original score by Erik Satie performed live. The program also includes film footage of Baker dancing and a tribute to jazz great Sidney Bechet. It culminates with Maurice Ravel's partly-jazz-inspired Piano Concerto in G featuring soloist Drew Petersen, winner of the 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2017 American Pianists Award. Presented in collaboration with Harry Cooper, senior curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art.

**A Halloween Spectacle Not to Be Missed**

This Halloween, the Cape Ann Symphony invited audiences to indulge in the eerie and the spectral, offering a unique concert experience that promised to be as thrilling as it was musically enriching. The performance featured the principal talents of the string section, affectionately dubbed the principal fiends for the night, delivering a program filled with ghostly music that captivated and spooked in equal measure.

- Original compositions and arrangements by Scott Moore, including Spooky Waltz and traditional pieces Jenny on the Railroad and Go Dig My Grave
- Sibelius, Satie, Purcell, and Schubert pieces, all given a unique twist in arrangements that highlighted the theme of the night

I have the pleasure of performing alongside the great trombonist, Mark Hetzler, who last performed with me in the successful Organ and Diapason Brass concert that closed our last season. A former member of the Empire Brass, and now professor at UW-Madison, Mark has toured the world as both a soloist and ensemble member, playing a wide range of repertoire. With a program featuring a New Orleans-style version of When the Saints Go Marching In, classical arrangements of Bach and Mendelssohn, and original compositions by Mark himself, I have no doubt that the audience is going to be moved and thrilled. French pianist Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted. Her poetic expression and peerless technical control have drawn comparisons to Martha Argerich and Jorge Bolet. Her contribution to and impact on the world of classical music were recognized by the French government with admission to the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest decoration) at the rank of Chevalier (Knight). In her role as a passionate wildlife conservationist, Grimaud established the Wolf Conservation Center in upper New York State, which offers education about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future.

Parisian lute virtuoso Thomas Dunford, often hailed as "The Eric Clapton of the lute" by BBC Magazine, brings centuries-old music to life with a modern pulse. Dunford's illustrious career has seen him share the stage with musical legends such as Bobby McFerrin and Anne-Sophie von Otter, and perform at prestigious venues including La Comédie Française, Carnegie Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2018, he founded the acclaimed Jupiter Ensemble, which quickly gained recognition with their debut dedicated to Vivaldi.

In this performance, part of the University of Chicago's Early Music Series, Dunford will present a program that spans the rich tapestry of early music.
