The French composer Eric Satie wrote his Le Fils des étoiles (The Son of the Stars) in December 1891, as incidental music for a three-act drama of the same name by Joséphin Péladan. Péladan alternately subtitled his play a “Chaldean Pastoral” or a “Wagnérie Kaldéenne” – the latter referring to the author’s fascination with Wagner – and while only three short Preludes made the premiere, Satie’s arrangements of them for solo piano provided wider exposure. The English conductor Jack Sheen has orchestrated the Preludes especially for this concert.

Lea Desandre's luminous and graceful voice is a joy for opera, firstly baroque when she was taken on by William Christie, who discovered her in his Jardin des Voix in 2015, then Mozartian, notably at the Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence festivals. Thomas Dunford's lute is as moving with his inventive continuos as it is on stage alone. Their passion for baroque music in no way hinders their shared idyll for the repertoire of French song. From there was born this intimate and eclectic program, which is also an album, crossing court airs, revisited romantic melody or opera and French variety. Over the centuries and at the whim of love.

Fünf Freunde [Five Friends] is the title of the exhibition (which runs until August 17) dedicated to the works and artistic circle of Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Merce Cunningham, and John Cage. Examining cultural politics during the Cold War as well as the issue of what it meant to be a homosexual during this time opens up new perspectives on the historiography of post-war Modernism. As part of this collaboration, the musicians of the BRSO will be joined by more than 100 friends and will focus on the composer John Cage through chamber music concerts and panel discussions as well as “BRSO und du” programs at Museum Brandhorst.

The legendary cabaret Chat Noir was founded by Rodolphe Salis in 1881. Alongside food and drink, it offered a rich artistic programme – songs, acrobatics, and shadow theatre. For struggling artists of Montmartre, it was a rare chance to perform, connect, and survive. Satie, who lived nearby, worked there as a pianist and songwriter, accompanying singers, comedians, and humorists. For one of them – Paulette Darty – he wrote the now-iconic chanson Je te veux, the very essence of Parisian cabaret.

In 1995, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Satie’s death, a project was premiered at the Bratislava festival Evenings of New Music (VEČERY NOVEJ HUDBY), brought to life by none other than John Tilbury. A group of composers were invited to respond in various ways to Satie’s charming four-hand “pear pieces” (Trois morceaux en forme de poire).

Inside the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, a new world premiere will unfold: Méditation avant la Messe des pauvres (Meditation before the Mass for the Poor) by composer Peter Graham, followed by Erik Satie’s enigmatic Messe des pauvres (Mass for the Poor).

Parisian lute virtuoso Thomas Dunford, often hailed as "The Eric Clapton of the lute" by BBC Magazine, brings centuries-old music to life with a modern pulse. Dunford's illustrious career has seen him share the stage with musical legends such as Bobby McFerrin and Anne-Sophie von Otter, and perform at prestigious venues including La Comédie Française, Carnegie Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2018, he founded the acclaimed Jupiter Ensemble, which quickly gained recognition with their debut dedicated to Vivaldi.

In this performance, part of the University of Chicago's Early Music Series, Dunford will present a program that spans the rich tapestry of early music. The repertoire includes masterpieces by John Dowland, such as "A Dream" and "Lachrimae," and selections from J.S. Bach's Suite for Cello in G Major, BWV 1007. The concert will also feature Marin Marais' "Les voix humaines" and "L’americaine," as well as well-known melodies by Erik Satie, including "Gymnopédie 1" and "Gnossienne." Dance and music are deeply intertwined, but this symphonic programme takes a bold departure from classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Nowhere is this more evident than in Ravel’s La valse. Spinning through the shadowy corners of Viennese waltzes, the piece unfolds into a dark commentary on the chaos of post-World War I Europe and the remnants of a 19th century imperial society once obsessed with the waltz dance. Don’t be deceived by its elegant opening though; this journey was always destined to end in a tumultuous crash.

Hans van Manen's "Trois Gnossiennes" invites audiences to explore the intricate relationship between music and dance through a stunning pas de deux set to Erik Satie’s masterful piano work. Jorma Elo's "Bach Cello Suites" combines classical foundations with contemporary flair, featuring ten dancers and a solo cellist in a breathtaking display of choreographic innovation. Lastly, Boston Ballet Artist My’Kal Stromile presents his mainstage debut with "Form and Gesture," a bold exploration of classical ballet movement reimagined for today's world.

Performances are scheduled from October 5th through October 15th, with evening shows at 7:30 pm and matinees at 1:30 pm. The event will take place at the prestigious Citizens Bank Opera House, ensuring an unforgettable experience in a venue known for its grandeur and elegance.

Join us for an extraordinary evening of music as Iván Fischer and Zoltán Fejérvári grace the stage with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks at the Munich Residence, Herkulessaal. This remarkable concert series will take place on Thursday, February 29, 2024, and Friday, March 1, 2024, both performances starting at 8:00 pm, with an introduction at 6:45 pm.

The program promises an enchanting mix of French and Hungarian compositions, showcasing the talents of conductor Iván Fischer and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári. The evening will feature Ernst von Dohnányi's "Symphonische Minuten, op. 36" and "Variations on a Children’s Song for Piano and Orchestra," alongside Claude Debussy's "Printemps, Symphonic Suite," Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1" and "Gnossienne No. 3" in orchestral versions by Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc respectively, and Maurice Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2."

Iván Fischer, known for his innovative programming and universal musical approach, has been a highly esteemed guest conductor for the BRSO for many years. This concert series will highlight his dedication to both French repertoire and the works of his Hungarian compatriot, Ernst von Dohnányi, offering an evening full of wit, versatility, and virtuosity.

Unfortunately, due to a shoulder injury, Carsten Duffin will not be able to participate in these concerts. However, we are delighted to welcome Zoltán Fejérvári, an internationally acclaimed pianist known for his exceptional performances and recordings, as he takes on the highly virtuosic piano part of Dohnányi's variations.

Isabel Valasek is a soprano based in Pittsburgh, PA. She is studying under Sari Gruber at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance, a certification in Music Education and a minor in Drama. This year in Carnegie Mellon Opera, Isabel performed as Lucy in “The Telephone” by Menotti and will also be in scenes such as singing Adele in “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II, Lucy in "The Three Penny Opera" by Kurt Weill and Idamante in “Idomeneo” by Mozart. She was previously a soloist in Carnegie Mellon University’s fully staged production of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by Craig Hella Johnson and was a cover for Despina in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”.

Known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and for co-founding the Cubist movement, it is surprisingly little know that artist Pablo Picasso was heavily involved in the costume design for many ground breaking ballets.

Paris in the 1920s was a place of great artistic conflict and excitement. While some like Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso embraced Neo-Classicism and a "return to order" in the aftermath of the Great War, others launched bold new experiments. Under the leadership of André Breton, Surrealism sought to shock the bourgeoisie, while a passion for African and African American art and culture, from jazz to art to dance, galvanized the city, personified above all by Josephine Baker. Join PCE for a screening of the classic Surrealist film Entr’acte (René Clair, 1924) with the original score by Erik Satie performed live. The program also includes film footage of Baker dancing and a tribute to jazz great Sidney Bechet. It culminates with Maurice Ravel's partly-jazz-inspired Piano Concerto in G featuring soloist Drew Petersen, winner of the 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2017 American Pianists Award. Presented in collaboration with Harry Cooper, senior curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art.

**Danse Macabre Concert: A Spine-Chilling Musical Experience**

Join the Cape Ann Symphony for a hauntingly memorable evening at the "Danse Macabre Concert," part of the Musicians Unleashed series. This special event took place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 3:00 pm, hosted within the historic walls of the Gloucester UU Church. 

**A Halloween Spectacle Not to Be Missed**

This Halloween, the Cape Ann Symphony invited audiences to indulge in the eerie and the spectral, offering a unique concert experience that promised to be as thrilling as it was musically enriching. The performance featured the principal talents of the string section, affectionately dubbed the principal fiends for the night, delivering a program filled with ghostly music that captivated and spooked in equal measure.

The concert showcased the exceptional skills of:
- Scott Moore on violin
- Erica Pisaturo on violin
- Brandon White on viola
- Seth MacLeod on cello

**The Program**

The evening's repertoire was a carefully curated selection of works that spanned genres and eras, including:
- Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8: Largo & Allegro Molto
- Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre
- A Pop Medley featuring arrangements of Stevie Wonder's Superstition, Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, and Michael Jackson's Thriller
- Penderecki's Tanz
- Original compositions and arrangements by Scott Moore, including Spooky Waltz and traditional pieces Jenny on the Railroad and Go Dig My Grave
- Sibelius, Satie, Purcell, and Schubert pieces, all given a unique twist in arrangements that highlighted the theme of the night

The Cape Ann Symphony, a cornerstone of the regional orchestral scene, continues to thrive thanks to the generous support of its community. Attendees and supporters were encouraged to consider making a donation to help keep the legacy of the Symphony strong and growing. Various donation options were available, ensuring that everyone could contribute in a way that was meaningful to them.

The Danse Macabre Concert was more than just a concert; it was an invitation to explore the darker, more mysterious side of music in the spirit of Halloween. It was an opportunity for the community to come together, to be entertained, and to support the arts in a unique and engaging way.

Opening with a programme inspired by French Burlesque of the 20s and 30s, the composers Jacques Ibert, Erik Satie, Germaine Tailleferre and Darius Milhaud all had one thing in common, alongside their more traditional compositions, they were all great early film music writers, so it is no wonder their music is so roaringly vivid and pleasantly picturesque.

I am excited to announce a new program for our February 28 organ concert! I have the pleasure of performing alongside the great trombonist, Mark Hetzler, who last performed with me in the successful Organ and Diapason Brass concert that closed our last season. A former member of the Empire Brass, and now professor at UW-Madison, Mark has toured the world as both a soloist and ensemble member, playing a wide range of repertoire. With a program featuring a New Orleans-style version of When the Saints Go Marching In, classical arrangements of Bach and Mendelssohn, and original compositions by Mark himself, I have no doubt that the audience is going to be moved and thrilled. French pianist Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted. Her poetic expression and peerless technical control have drawn comparisons to Martha Argerich and Jorge Bolet. Her contribution to and impact on the world of classical music were recognized by the French government with admission to the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest decoration) at the rank of Chevalier (Knight). In her role as a passionate wildlife conservationist, Grimaud established the Wolf Conservation Center in upper New York State, which offers education about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future.

The evening opens with Ravel's vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

A classically trained pianist with the creative energy of a jazz performer, Aaron Diehl returns to Orange County in “Paradoxes in Performance,” a program that explores the role of improvisation in both classical and jazz pieces.

Pianist Hélène Grimaud takes center stage in a recital that highlights her breathtaking intuition and inventiveness. The program sparkles with miniatures, including Claude Debussy’s bewitching Clair de lune, alongside the sleek minimalism of Erik Satie’s Gnossiennes, tuneful gems by contemporary Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, and spellbinding mazurakas and waltzes by piano royalty, Frédéric Chopin. The program concludes in spectacular fashion with Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana, a kaleidoscopic spectrum of shifting moods regarded by many (including Schumann) as the composer’s finest composition.

The Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas has been making music with radiant, instinctive joy since age four. Her deeply expressive performances—marked by a rare blend of technical refinement and emotional immediacy—have made her one of the most compelling artists of her generation. Highlights of the 2025–26 season include performances with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, Taiwan Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Residentie Orkest, Bochum Symphony Orchestra, and a five-city tour with Euskadiko Orkestra. In October 2025 Thomas curated a week of Paris-inspired concerts at the Viva Cello Festival in Switzerland. She embarked on a North American recital tour with pianist-composer Julien Brocal and continues to tour with clarinetist YOM.
