Join us for an extraordinary evening of music as Iván Fischer and Zoltán Fejérvári grace the stage with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks at the Munich Residence, Herkulessaal. This remarkable concert series will take place on Thursday, February 29, 2024, and Friday, March 1, 2024, both performances starting at 8:00 pm, with an introduction at 6:45 pm.

The program promises an enchanting mix of French and Hungarian compositions, showcasing the talents of conductor Iván Fischer and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári. The evening will feature Ernst von Dohnányi's "Symphonische Minuten, op. 36" and "Variations on a Children’s Song for Piano and Orchestra," alongside Claude Debussy's "Printemps, Symphonic Suite," Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1" and "Gnossienne No. 3" in orchestral versions by Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc respectively, and Maurice Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2."

Iván Fischer, known for his innovative programming and universal musical approach, has been a highly esteemed guest conductor for the BRSO for many years. This concert series will highlight his dedication to both French repertoire and the works of his Hungarian compatriot, Ernst von Dohnányi, offering an evening full of wit, versatility, and virtuosity.

Unfortunately, due to a shoulder injury, Carsten Duffin will not be able to participate in these concerts. However, we are delighted to welcome Zoltán Fejérvári, an internationally acclaimed pianist known for his exceptional performances and recordings, as he takes on the highly virtuosic piano part of Dohnányi's variations.

Paris in the 1920s was a place of great artistic conflict and excitement. While some like Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso embraced Neo-Classicism and a "return to order" in the aftermath of the Great War, others launched bold new experiments. Under the leadership of André Breton, Surrealism sought to shock the bourgeoisie, while a passion for African and African American art and culture, from jazz to art to dance, galvanized the city, personified above all by Josephine Baker. Join PCE for a screening of the classic Surrealist film Entr’acte (René Clair, 1924) with the original score by Erik Satie performed live. The program also includes film footage of Baker dancing and a tribute to jazz great Sidney Bechet. It culminates with Maurice Ravel's partly-jazz-inspired Piano Concerto in G featuring soloist Drew Petersen, winner of the 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2017 American Pianists Award. Presented in collaboration with Harry Cooper, senior curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art.

**Danse Macabre Concert: A Spine-Chilling Musical Experience**

Join the Cape Ann Symphony for a hauntingly memorable evening at the "Danse Macabre Concert," part of the Musicians Unleashed series. This special event took place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 3:00 pm, hosted within the historic walls of the Gloucester UU Church. 

**A Halloween Spectacle Not to Be Missed**

This Halloween, the Cape Ann Symphony invited audiences to indulge in the eerie and the spectral, offering a unique concert experience that promised to be as thrilling as it was musically enriching. The performance featured the principal talents of the string section, affectionately dubbed the principal fiends for the night, delivering a program filled with ghostly music that captivated and spooked in equal measure.

The concert showcased the exceptional skills of:
- Scott Moore on violin
- Erica Pisaturo on violin
- Brandon White on viola
- Seth MacLeod on cello

**The Program**

The evening's repertoire was a carefully curated selection of works that spanned genres and eras, including:
- Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8: Largo & Allegro Molto
- Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre
- A Pop Medley featuring arrangements of Stevie Wonder's Superstition, Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, and Michael Jackson's Thriller
- Penderecki's Tanz
- Original compositions and arrangements by Scott Moore, including Spooky Waltz and traditional pieces Jenny on the Railroad and Go Dig My Grave
- Sibelius, Satie, Purcell, and Schubert pieces, all given a unique twist in arrangements that highlighted the theme of the night

The Cape Ann Symphony, a cornerstone of the regional orchestral scene, continues to thrive thanks to the generous support of its community. Attendees and supporters were encouraged to consider making a donation to help keep the legacy of the Symphony strong and growing. Various donation options were available, ensuring that everyone could contribute in a way that was meaningful to them.

The Danse Macabre Concert was more than just a concert; it was an invitation to explore the darker, more mysterious side of music in the spirit of Halloween. It was an opportunity for the community to come together, to be entertained, and to support the arts in a unique and engaging way.

I am excited to announce a new program for our February 28 organ concert! I have the pleasure of performing alongside the great trombonist, Mark Hetzler, who last performed with me in the successful Organ and Diapason Brass concert that closed our last season. A former member of the Empire Brass, and now professor at UW-Madison, Mark has toured the world as both a soloist and ensemble member, playing a wide range of repertoire. With a program featuring a New Orleans-style version of When the Saints Go Marching In, classical arrangements of Bach and Mendelssohn, and original compositions by Mark himself, I have no doubt that the audience is going to be moved and thrilled. Mark and I can’t wait to have a blast with you all at this unique Organ and Trombone concert. See you there!  – Greg Zelek

French pianist Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted. Her poetic expression and peerless technical control have drawn comparisons to Martha Argerich and Jorge Bolet. Her contribution to and impact on the world of classical music were recognized by the French government with admission to the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest decoration) at the rank of Chevalier (Knight). In her role as a passionate wildlife conservationist, Grimaud established the Wolf Conservation Center in upper New York State, which offers education about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future.

A classically trained pianist with the creative energy of a jazz performer, Aaron Diehl returns to Orange County in “Paradoxes in Performance,” a program that explores the role of improvisation in both classical and jazz pieces.

Pianist Hélène Grimaud takes center stage in a recital that highlights her breathtaking intuition and inventiveness. The program sparkles with miniatures, including Claude Debussy’s bewitching Clair de lune, alongside the sleek minimalism of Erik Satie’s Gnossiennes, tuneful gems by contemporary Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, and spellbinding mazurakas and waltzes by piano royalty, Frédéric Chopin. The program concludes in spectacular fashion with Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana, a kaleidoscopic spectrum of shifting moods regarded by many (including Schumann) as the composer’s finest composition.
