The opening concert of the Chamber Music Series will present an unusual program with an unusual instrumentation. The world-renowned Zemlinsky Quartet will be complemented by oboe, clarinet and double bass, which forms the basis of folk music. Symbolically, the concert will also feature Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 15 in G major, Op. 161, which was composed in 1826 and is one of Schubert’s masterpieces.

Throughout the years, composers and musicians such as Gershwin, Copland, and Joséphine Baker left their mark on the city’s dynamic music scene. This concert celebrates the rich musical exchange between continents, from the rhythms of jazz and ragtime to the unique style and virtuosity of Cuban violinist José White. Jazz musicians adopted French harmonies and the French, in turn, embraced the rhythmic freedom of jazz with open arms. The composers featured in this concert were either Americans beloved in Paris, lived there for a time, or, like Debussy and Ravel, were deeply influenced by the vibrant music of the Americas. Join us for a program that captures the dazzling interplay of these musical worlds.

Diesmal geht es nach Südamerika: Der Brasilianer Heitor Villa-Lobos und der Argentinier Alberto Ginastera verbanden den rhythmischen Drive ihrer Heimat mit der kompositorischen Raffinesse der europäischen Moderne. Astor Piazzolla machte den vormals verruchten Tango Argentino konzertsaalfähig; in seinem wohl berühmtesten Stück verabschiedete er sich mit sehnsuchtsvollen Klängen von seinem Vater. Darius Milhaud galt in den 1920ern als enfant terrible der Pariser Musikszene; als Attaché des französischen Botschafters in Rio de Janeiro schnappte er lokale Sounds auf und integrierte sie in seine Werke. Mit der Saxofon-Virtuosin Asya Fateyeva ist eine dynamische Solistin mit von der Partie, die ebenfalls locker zwischen Klassik und anderen Musikstilen wandelt.

Carl Nielsen's 2nd symphony "The Four Temperaments" is a magnificent study of the human mind. Because even though the title suggests a simplistic division of the human psyche, Nielsen's work is precisely a three-dimensional exploration of being human itself, all our contradictions and inner battles exhibited in terrific musical form. To guide us through the many emotions, we have the young conducting students from the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, and the concert also offers a soloist from the Southern Danish Conservatory of Music in Darius Milhaud's "Suite Anglaise".

The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Michael Nowak welcome a guest ensemble to close out the 2024-25 concert season with a concert that explores the range of human expression, from the sensual to the profound. Early 20th Century composer Darius Milhaud expresses French exoticism through jazz-inspired harmonies and rhythms that portray an African creation myth in the ballet suite La Creation du Monde. Russian composer Igor Stravinsky explores the
harmonies and driving dance rhythms of early American jazz music in Ragtime. And finally, Maestro Nowak and the Philharmonic Orchestra are joined by the Allan Hancock College Singers for a performance of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem, the legendary unfinished threnody penned the same year of the composer’s death.

Immerse yourself in an evening of exquisite music as the York Symphony Orchestra presents "French Connections with Branford Marsalis" as part of their 2024-25 Classical Series, "John Williams Forever." This captivating concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 7:30 PM EST, promising a two-hour journey through French-inspired compositions at the prestigious Appell Center for the Performing Arts.

The program features a rich tapestry of works that showcase the influence of French music, highlighted by the talents of acclaimed alto saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Audiences will be treated to Darius Milhaud’s "Scaramouche," a piece that echoes the cheerful melodies of Harlem jazz, and John Williams’s "Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra," a work that exudes progressive jazz vibes. The concert will also mark the East Coast premiere of Lawrence Golan’s "Giovanna d’Arco," a composition inspired by Maestro Golan’s daughter and dedicated to the legendary figure Joan of Arc. The evening will conclude with Hector Berlioz’s dramatic "Symphonie fantastique," taking listeners on a fantastical journey through the dreams and demise of its hero.

Conductor Lawrence Golan, known for his demand across the United States and internationally, will lead the orchestra. The concert will also feature performances by Ji Su Jung, a celebrated vibraphonist and the first solo percussionist to receive the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, and Branford Marsalis, a saxophonist whose collaborations with classical ensembles have garnered widespread acclaim.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a Pre-Concert Talk from 6:30-7:00 PM at the front of the Appell Center’s Strand Theatre stage. Admission is free for all ticket holders, offering an enlightening journey into the evening's program with Assistant Conductor Rebekah O’Brien.

Dancers from Chicago’s world-renowned Joffrey Ballet join the CSO with newly commissioned choreographies. Symphonies by Haydn and the Chevalier de Saint-Georges abound in witty and joyful melodies while two 20th-century works are full of popular influences: Perkinson’s jazz-tinted Sinfonietta No. 1 and Milhaud’s rollicking Brazilian postcard, The Ox on the Roof.

One of the Musikverein's highlights this season is Clara Schumann's flower album. She kept dried flowers in this little book and gave it, with a personal dedication, to her dear friend, Johannes Brahms. Darius Milhaud composed "La cheminée du roi René" for the film "Cavalcade d'amour." His version for woodwind quintet will be performed this evening. Franz Schubert's Introduction and Variations on his song "Trock'ne Blumen" (Dry Flowers) is a highly virtuosic work that he wrote for his circle of friends. In the second part of the concert, the recipient of the flower book himself will speak as a composer: Brahms composed his cheerful first serenade as a nonet for wind and strings.

MTS’s own Principal Trumpet Andrew Gignac, a double threat on classical and jazz, will make you swoon in jazz standards such as “Embraceable You” and Puttin’ on the Ritz”.

North and South American rhythms – in Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" they characterize the two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Bernstein arranged some numbers from the now famous musical as a suite, which conquered the concert stage as "symphonic dances."
Just like George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," in which jazz elements, blues and symphonic music merge together. The African-American composer Florence Price is considered a rediscovery, and her "Suite of Dance" will be heard. Darius Milhaud's dance-like cinema fantasy "The Ox on the Roof" and the rhythmic piece "Huapango" by the Mexican José Pablo Moncayo will also be heard.

Antonio Pappano conducts the wonderful Chamber Orchestra of Europe in a program that celebrates the marriage of jazz and classical music with Bertrand Chamayou, a faithful among the faithful of the Dijon Opera.

The charismatic Italian-British conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, who has been absent from the season since 2018, returns to lead the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, a forty-year-old ensemble that brings together instrumentalists from all over Europe. The program is entirely twentieth-century and evokes the spirit of American jazz, from the ballets La création du monde by Milhaud and Fancy Free by Bernstein to the Variations on «I Got Rhythm» by Gershwin. The highlight of the evening is the whimsical and at times unpredictable Second Concerto by Saint-Saëns, which Pappano presents by relying on the luminous and flexible pianism of Bertrand Chamayou, the only four-time winner of the French “Victoires de la Musique” award and a guest in the season in 2016.

On the occasion of the James Ensor year, Casco Phil is browsing through the colorful repertoire for woodwind quintet. Ensor himself prided himself on the fact that many contemporaries shared his sensitivity to colors with none other than Claude Debussy, the founder of musical impressionism. The interweaving of sound and color turned out to be a sign of the times: just as Ensor was inspired by shades of color and light, a whole generation of French composers became fascinated by the contrast between light and dark. Milhaud and Taffanel, among others, managed to utilize the wide sound diversity of a woodwind collective. The trend was also picked up on the Flemish side: Frédéric Devreese composed his James Ensor Suite as the ultimate tribute to the Ostend master. From delicate melodies to richly varied textures, be moved by the splendor of this enchanting music in the intimate setting of the Predikherenkerk.

Lina González-Granados makes her Minnesota Orchestra debut in this concert focused on music that both drew from and canonized the sounds of the Roaring Twenties. Exceptional AMFS alumni join forces for two jazz-inspired 20th century favorites Conrad Tao has been called “a magical pianist, with a scholar’s mind wrapped in an almost impossible technique” (San Diego Union-Tribute) Charismatic, award-winning conductor Piotr Waclawik attended the Aspen Conducting Academy and was chosen as assistant conductor for the 2024 season. He is also the assistant conductor of the Warsaw Philharmonic.

Darius Milhaud’s Suite for Violin, Clarinet and Piano was taken from the incidental music he wrote for Jean Anouilh’s 1937 play, Le voyageur sans bagage (The Traveler Without Luggage). The Trio by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian features his characteristic style of composing classical music with folk-inspired rhythms and melodies, all emphasized by colorful instrumentation. Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring scandalized listeners at its premiere in 1913, but the work has since stood the test of time as one of the composer’s finest creations and one of the greatest orchestral works of the 20th century. Klaus Mäkelä pairs this showpiece with Gershwin’s toe-tapping Concerto in F, performed by esteemed French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and a cheeky curtain-raiser by Milhaud.

Helena Lent is a saxophonist originally from Poughkeepsie, New York. She is a current senior Music Performance major with a Film & Visual Media minor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. While at Carnegie Mellon, she has had the privilege to study under Dr. Jason Kush. In the Spring of 2023, Helena studied abroad in Milan, Italy, under Mario Marzi, who teaches saxophone at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi. At Carnegie Mellon, Helena has participated in the school’s Wind Ensemble, Philharmonic, Contemporary Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Saxophone Quartet, and other chamber ensembles. While she focuses mostly on classical saxophone, Helena has experience playing jazz, having participated in the Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston, MA (2017), placed at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Rockville, MD (2018, 2019, 2020), and invited to perform at the Jazz Education Network Conference in New Orleans, LA (2020). Other notable performances include Carnegie Hall in New York City, NY (2018).

Here On Earth features musical depictions of our planet earth, its evolution, and the lives of its inhabitants, expressed through music that spans centuries, from Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet to Darius Milhaud’s La Création du Monde (composed in 1923) and Clarice Assad’s A World Of Change, newly commissioned in 2023. The concert begins with Jake Heggie’s Earthrise, reflecting on the fragility of our tiny blue planet from the perspective of the iconic photograph taken from the surface of the moon during the 1968 Apollo 8 landing. Traveling through time and space, the program telescopes in to celebrate the beauties of the natural world, and explore our relationship to this changing earth that is our home.

Jon Nakamatsu catapulted to international attention in 1997 as the Gold medalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has been a guest soloist with over 150 orchestras worldwide. Nakamatsu is on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is Artist-in-Residence of the Chautauqua Institution Piano Program. With clarinetist Jon Manasse, Mr Nakamatsu tours as a member of the Manasse/Nakamatsu Duo. Following its Boston debut in 2004, the Duo released its first CD of Brahms Sonatas for clarinet and piano which received the highest praise from the New York Times Classical Music Editor James Oestreich, who named it among the "Best of the Year" for 2008. The Duo serve as Artistic Directors of the renowned Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival.
