When the turn of the century dance scene underwent major changes, a new world of sounds, colours and rhythmic imagination opened. Under the direction of Anton Holmer, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra takes you through a time when ballet moved from playful folk to modernist elegance. The Swedish Ballet in Paris was a force that drove development forward both scenically and musically with works such as Darius Millhaud's Le Creation du Monde (The Creation of the World), Kurt Atterberg's De fåvitska Jungfruna (the foolish virgins) and Manuel de Falla's El sombrero des tres pices (the three-tipped hat). Maurice Ravel's Une barque sur l'océan then glides forward like an impressionist dream ship in a concert that brings new life to the ballet music of the turning point.

The biblical Book of Genesis provided the inspiration for commissioning seven concise works from seven different composers: Lisa Streich (Sweden), Francesco Filidei (Italy), Chen Yi (China/USA), Hannah Kendall (England), Mikel Urquiza (Spain), Saad Haddad (USA), and Mark Andre (Germany). These new Genesis compositions will be performed after the overture from Darius Milhaud’s ballet La création du monde has already set the musical theme. They will be followed by Kaija Saariaho’s last completed work, the trumpet concerto Hush, written for the jazz trumpeter Verneri Pohjola. Finally, we will turn our attention to the soaring geyser fountains of Iceland, which Jón Leifs, a native of the world’s largest volcanic island and a composer of extraordinary sonic power, translated into musical form and energy.

Music from the Roaring Twenties: jazz meets classical meets weird and wonderful.
Take a deep dive into some fabulously strange corners of 20th century music. Ibert’s sparkling, playful Divertissement was composed for a play about a straw hat. Its short but sweet movements range from parody to pathos to party-time. Leonard Bernstein declared that Milhaud’s Création du Monde was the best example of jazz-classical fusion: not a ‘flirtation’ with jazz, but a ‘real love affair’. It is serious, funky, and full-blooded. Walton’s Façade, meanwhile, defies categorisation: part chamber piece, part poetry recital, part provocation. Soprano Jennifer France takes on the fabulously tongue-twisting poetry.

Whisk yourself away to the "City of Light" with the bubbly wit of Offenbach’s La vie Parisienne Overture and a world-class new work by a local Louisiana composer. The French celebration continues with the surreal, jazzy rhythms of Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit and the bustling cinematic flair of Ibert’s Suite Symphonique: Paris. We conclude with the festive grandeur of Mozart’s Symphony No. 31, a majestic tribute to the elegance of the French capital.

“If you go to see Le boeuf sur le toit , you will enjoy it. You just have to look and listen without making the slightest effort. Don't look for an idea, a plot, an intention, a plot, a symbol in this farce. There's none of that. So, what happens? Nothing. Nothing happens. Get this into your head and don't tire yourself out needlessly. The curtain rises on the interior of a bar. Lively café-concert music is played, made more abundant by the use of modern musical sources. Amusing characters, their simple human heads replaced by large painted cardboard heads, enter one by one. All these characters—there are eight of them, I think—sway and dance slowly to lively music that doesn't lack verve and frankness.” With these words, the critic of «Le Ménestrel» (announcement 82, no. 11, March 12, 1920, p. 107) reviewed the first performance of Darius Milhaud's Le boeuf sur le toit , which took place on February 21, 1920, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, with sets by Raoul Dufy and the collaboration of the clowns of the Medrano circus, the famous Fratellini. Composed in 1919, Le boeuf sur le toit (The Ox on the Roof) expresses the composer's nostalgia for Brazil, a country where he had stayed during the Great War as secretary to the poet Paul Claudel, then French ambassador to Rio de Janeiro. Having returned to Paris, Milhaud decided to assemble, as the composer himself stated, “a few popular melodies, tangos, sambas and even a Portuguese fado and transcribe them as the theme of a rondo that recurs between each successive pair”.

Step into the charm and vibrancy of two of Europe’s most iconic cities – Paris and London. From elegant salons to bustling boulevards, this program captures the essence of each metropolis through vivid and inventive works. Francis Poulenc’s witty and urbane Sextet bursts with Parisian flair, while Darius Milhaud’s La création du monde blends jazz and classical idioms in a bold, rhythmically charged vision of the world’s beginning, inspired by African mythology and the energy of 1920s Paris. Balancing the French exuberance is Haydn’s London Trio No. 3, a piece that is piece is elegant, buoyant, and full of wit, which he composed during his visits to England.

Welcome to a concert featuring Beethoven's timeless tones in conjunction with works by four other remarkable composers, whose creativity and unique voices have contributed significantly to the modern musical landscape.

Rhythmic energy characterizes both Nørgård and Martinus' works. In  Fire over Water  both fire and water are present and an intense rhythmic energy describes the contrasting elements. In Martinus' work the rhythmic energy is shown in an expressive dialogue between violin and cello and at the same time with a refined balance between the two instruments.

A rhythmic intensity is continued in the alternation with lyrical passages in Milhaud's suite inspired by the French medieval atmosphere with musical depictions of everything from jesters to hunting scenes.

This musical journey travels from the American prairie to the cafés of Paris, the forests of Finland, and the rivers of Germany—blending local voices with global inspiration. We begin at home with Tim Hinck’s “Prairie Nightscape”, a quietly radiant snapshot of dawn breaking across wide open land. Then it’s off to Milhaud’s Le Bœuf sur le toit, a whirlwind of Brazilian melodies and French playfulness—quirky, jazzy, and irresistibly fun. Darius Milhaud’s playful and whimsical Le Bœuf sur le toit follows, a jazz-infused romp inspired by Brazilian melodies that brims with charm and rhythmic vitality. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the Chattanooga Youth Symphony joins the CSO onstage for a powerful Side-by-Side performance. Together, they perform Sibelius’ Finlandia, a proud and urgent call for resilience, and Schumann’s “Rhenish” Symphony, an expansive, joyful work inspired by the majesty of the Rhine. Jazz musicians adopted French harmonies and the French, in turn, embraced the rhythmic freedom of jazz with open arms.
