Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, heard here in Judy Loman’s delicate transcription, opens with its famous languid flute solo, dissolving boundaries between dream and waking. Jean-Michel Damase’s Sonata for Flute and Harp continues in this refined tradition, its four movements blending classical clarity with supple lyricism: graceful lines, a gentle but restless Andante, a spirited scherzo-like third movement, and a Finale that shifts from introspective calm to dazzling brilliance.

Works by three eclectic composers comprise this afternoon’s programme. Paul Hindemith’s output was bewilderingly large, and the Kleine Kammermusik performed today finds him in neoclassical mood. Jacques Ibert also wrote much music across several genres, including for several French- and English-language films. Pianist Jean-Michel Damase had a much smaller output, but wrote several pieces for wind quintet.

Piazzolla presents us a musical evolution of the tango in four evocative movements. Writing music that would give pleasure to an audience on first hearing was Damase's main compositional aim. Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel's Piano Trio is decidedly music written by a master pianist. ​
