This special concert celebrates 25 years of the music and animation of Disney and Pixar films. Pixar in Concert will feature music and visuals from 15 classics, including Pixar’s inaugural full-length computer animated film “Toy Story” (1995), and the Academy Award®-winning films “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “WALL-E,” “Up,” “Coco” and “Toy Story 3.” With full-scale cinematic visuals projected above live musical performance, this memorable program features score highlights by Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composers Randy Newman (“Toy Story” films, “Monsters Inc.,” “Monsters University,” “Cars”) and Michael Giacchino (“The Incredibles,” “Incredibles 2,” “Ratatouille,” “Up,” “Inside Out,” “Coco”), plus music by Thomas Newman (“Finding Nemo,” “Finding Dory,” “WALL-E”).

Join your Madison Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Associate Conductor Kyle Knox for a FREE community concert at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 9, VAHS Performing Arts Center, 234 Wildcat Way, Verona. MSO On the Go is a new series that brings the musicians of the Madison Symphony to performing arts centers in your community. The program features music the whole family will enjoy, plus a special appearance by the winner of our 2023 Fall Youth Concerto Competition, Lorenz Fradkin-Annen, violin.

Verona Area Performing Arts Series

We begin with Leonard Bernstein, who was a major influence on Music Director John DeMain’s early life and career. Bernstein had a knack for bringing lighthearted populism into the concert hall. Though written in the late 1940s, Shostakovich’s first concerto makes use of traditional musical forms, including a famous Passacaglia, favored by composers like Bach 200 years earlier. Feared by violinists and loved by audiences, it was a hit from the day it was written and is one of the true masterpieces of the solo violin repertoire. The final work is Brahms’ G minor Piano Quartet, orchestrated by Schoenberg. These will be the MSO’s first ever performances of this remarkable work. Schoenberg took Brahms’ chamber work and transformed it into a kaleidoscope of 20th-century orchestral color, giving virtually every instrument the spotlight.

Join the Madison Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with Tamera and Leotha Stanely, the Mt. Zion Gospel Choir, and Associate Conductor Kyle Knox for a FREE community concert on Saturday, June 24 at 4:00 p.m.! Bring the family and plenty of water and sunscreen. Food trucks will be on site beginning at 2:30 p.m. but feel free to bring a picnic as well. We’ll also be giving away MSO t-shirts and tickets to our 23/24 season concerts. We can’t wait to see you at this exciting summer event!

You’re invited to join us Monday, June 19,2023! Play in the golf tournament and have your photo taken with Mike Leckrone, UW Band Director emeritus, who once again joins our event as celebrity guest. Plus, enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres before the concert, followed by dinner. MSO’s dynamic Associate Conductor, Kyle Knox will lead the orchestra, and Professor Leckrone will guest conduct one piece. In celebration of Juneteenth, the Let Freedom Ring concert will feature selections by African American composers Florence Price and William Grant Still, plus Aaron Copland and Antonín Dvořák. Amelia Zitoun, winner of the MSO’s Bolz Young Artist Competition will also perform a dazzling solo with the orchestra.

Join the Madison Symphony Orchestra in a special end-of-year side-by-side concert in partnership with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras (WYSO), conducted by MSO Associate Conductor Kyle Knox. The winner of WYSO’s 2023 Concerto Competition, cellist Katarina Kenney, will be featured. This single performance will take place on Saturday, May 20 at 7 pm in the Mead Witter Foundation Concert Hall at the University of Wisconsin Hamel Music Center.

Beyond the Score®, again conducted by our wonderfully talented Kyle Knox and supported by three star actors from American Players Theatre plunges into the depths of this deeply romantic work. Emily Secor, who has the voice of an angel, and who delighted us on our streamed Christmas concert of 2020, returns to sing the angelic last movement.

Your Madison Symphony Orchestra’s first MSO at the Movies of the season presents Disney and Pixar’s Coco in Concert featuring a screening of the complete film with Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composer Michael Giacchino’s musical score performed live to the film. In addition to the original score by Giacchino, “Coco” also features the Oscar®-winning song “Remember Me” by Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and additional songs co-written by Germaine Franco and co-director and screenwriter Adrian Molina.

The second Madison Symphony Orchestra MSO at the Movies of the season presents Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert featuring the complete film with composer John Williams’ iconic Oscar®-winning score performed live to the film. Since the release of this first Star Wars movie over 45 years ago, the Star Wars saga has had a seismic impact on both cinema and culture, inspiring audiences around the world with its mythic storytelling, captivating characters, groundbreaking special effects and iconic musical scores composed by Williams. Fans will experience the scope and grandeur of this beloved film in a live symphonic concert experience.
