For their return appearance, the Juilliard and Hamelin—an artist known the world over for his unrivaled blend of consummate musicianship and radiant technique—unite for César Franck’s mammoth Piano Quintet in F Minor, a work that roils with passion and searing emotional intensity.

The Telekom Beethoven Competition is characterized by its balance between regional roots and global appeal. The international jury evaluates candidates, who are accommodated and looked after by host families in Bonn during the competition. The judging rounds, semifinals, and finals have developed a loyal following, as participants meet not only pianists but also individuals who rise above themselves under the enormous challenges of the competition. The Beethoven Orchestra is proud to once again accompany the finals and thus support these young artists.

At 98 years old, he is a living legend, and we cherish every moment we spend with our honorary conductor, Herbert Blomstedt. It has been said of our regular collaborations with him that "everything is played with such vibrant energy" and "full of rapturous enthusiasm." This time, he, as a skilled conductor, leads us through two symphonic soundscapes. First, we contemplate the "slender Greek maiden between two northern giants": this is how Beethoven's Fourth Symphony was once described, as it was composed in 1806 between the bold "Eroica" and the triumphant Fifth. Here, we can show off our "playful leaps"—and also revel in the enchanting melodies of the composer, who was in love at the time and whose heart is said to have "almost burst with happiness" while writing it.

Under the energetic direction of Case Scaglione, Music Director of the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France, your National Orchestra opens the evening with Réveil à l'aube d'une ville by Lisa Chevalier, young winner of the 2024 Unanimes competition. This contemporary work evokes urban renaissance through innovative orchestral textures. Next comes Jean Sibelius's Symphony No. 7 , a single-flow work that transports us from the darkest depths to the brightest bursts. After the interval, Beethoven takes possession of the stage with the Leonore Overture No. 3 , a veritable opera condensed into a few minutes, then Symphony No. 8 , a jewel often overshadowed by its more famous sisters. Beneath its apparent classical lightness, it reveals all the inventiveness and humor of Beethoven's genius. A concert that celebrates the eternal vitality of musical creation through the centuries.

With the end of the 2024/2025 season, Axel Kober has stepped down as General Music Director of the Duisburg Philharmonic. It was a long and fruitful collaboration, for which the conductor is now being honored with the 2025 Duisburg City Music Prize, sponsored by the Köhler-Osbahr Foundation. For him, the award is a wonderful acknowledgment – ​​"to receive feedback, so to speak, after the years spent together that what we have done has left its mark." And, of course, he will try "to continue to remain connected to Duisburg's musical life." A promise he immediately fulfills in the 4th Philharmonic Concert. After programming Arnold Schoenberg's powerful "Gurre-Lieder" in his farewell concert as General Music Director, he returns to his former orchestra conducting works by two American composers and combining them with Beethoven's Symphony No. 7: Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question" sounds mystical and transcendental, creating an iconic work of American modernism. Meanwhile, in Samuel Barber's popular Violin Concerto, violin virtuosity and voluptuous melodies enter into a delightful liaison. Dance-like rhythms then characterize Beethoven's Seventh, which, with the Allegretto, also contains one of the greatest hits of the Viennese classic.

Since its founding in 2010, Trio Gaspard has established itself as one of the finest and most sought-after piano trios of its generation. The ensemble, led by the wonderful pianist and chamber musician Nicholas Rimmer, is dedicated to the classical trio repertoire, but also explores more obscure works and contemporary works. The first installments of its complete recording of the Haydn Trios have been critically acclaimed and, according to "Strad" magazine, "have left us wanting more." Following performances at London's Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Shanghai Symphony Hall, among others, Trio Gaspard now makes its Blaibach debut.

The Stamic Quartet is an ensemble with a rich legacy dating back to the 1980s. For this concert, they will highlight the chamber works of Vítězslav Novák, alongside masterpieces by internationally renowned composers. The programme includes one of Beethoven’s iconic string quartets as well as music by Tchaikovsky, whose music receives special focus this season at the Czech Chamber Music Society.

Born into a family of musicians in Munich, her career began at an early age. Her breakthrough came at the latest with numerous prizes at the Sarasate, Paganini and Tchaikovsky competitions, which quickly took her to the world's most important stages as a soloist. As a soloist and chamber musician, Yuki Manuela Janke also inspires as concertmaster of the most traditional orchestras. Her interpretation of Richard Strauss' "Heldenleben" in the Golden Hall in Vienna with the Staatskapelle Dresden and Christian Thielemann attracted particular attention.

Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (New York Times),  clarinetist Anthony McGill enjoys a dynamic international solo and chamber music career and is  principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — the first African-American principal player in  the organization's history. He is the recipient of the 2020 Avery Fisher Prize, one of classical  music’s most significant awards, and was named Musical America’s 2024 Instrumentalist of the  Year. American Stories, his album with the Pacifica Quartet, was nominated for a GRAMMY® for  Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. McGill appears as a soloist with top orchestras, including the New York and Los Angeles  Philharmonics, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, and Detroit  Symphony Orchestras. He performed alongside Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Gabriela Montero at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, premiering a piece by John Williams.  As a chamber musician, McGill is a collaborator of the Brentano, Daedalus, Guarneri, JACK,  Miró, Pacifica, Shanghai, Takács, and Tokyo Quartets, and performs with leading artists  including Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Gloria Chien, Yefim Bronfman, Gil Shaham, Midori, Mitsuko Uchida, and Lang Lang. He serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School and is the Artistic Director for Juilliard’s Music  Advancement Program. He holds the William R. and Hyunah Yu Brody Distinguished Chair at the  Curtis Institute of Music. In 2020, McGill’s #TakeTwoKnees campaign protesting the death of George Floyd and historic racial injustice went viral. In 2023, he partnered with Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative to organize a classical music industry convening at EJI’s Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama, in which leaders and artists in classical music examined America’s history of racial inequality and how this legacy continues to impact their work. He is a Backun Artist and performs exclusively on Backun Clarinets.

The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. As one of the world's most sought-after young artists, he champions the composers of his Scandinavian homeland. He recorded the album "Nordic Rhapsody" with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, on which the two immerse themselves entirely in the Nordic soundscape, sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes profoundly. Under the direction of its new chief conductor, François-Xavier Roth, the SWR Symphony Orchestra presents two revolutionary composers side by side: Ludwig van Beethoven and Helmut Lachenmann. The first, a giant of Viennese Classical music, the second, a post-war sound pioneer. Both not only pushed musical boundaries with their works, but also consistently challenged their audiences' listening habits. Although Lachenmann, who turned 90 in November, strikes a completely different tone than Beethoven, he clearly places himself in the latter's tradition as a rebel and free spirit: "Beethoven was the first to consciously stop composing to please!"

No other contemporary singer's name is as synonymous with the Lied as that of Julian Prégardien. Although also impressive on the operatic stage and in oratorios with his deeply sensitive tenor, the German singer reveals himself particularly intensely in the lyrical, poetic, and romantic genre of the Lied. He repeatedly delves into this cosmos, especially with songs by Schubert, but also by other composers who are at home in this field. To ensure that an orchestra like the CAMERATA—known for its vocal sound and chamber music sensitivity—can also perform in the area of ​​Lieder normally reserved for piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements of two Lied compositions by Beethoven and Schubert were selected. Even in the original, they depict epic song scenes, whose dimensions are all the more enhanced with orchestral support. To the songs with words, the CAMERATA adds the endless song without words from Schubert's Symphony in B minor.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s first Piano Concerto is a youthful work that in many ways captures the emergence of the composer’s style. In this concert, Sweden’s Radio Concert Hall Berwaldhallen and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra welcome for the first time the British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. After the intermission, conductor Yoel Gamzou will the lead the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the British composer William Walton’s emotionally powerful first symphony from 1935.

Philippe Herreweghe, a grand seigneur of historical performance practice and clever programming, brings a particularly piquant pair of works into conversation in his ProArte concert. On the one hand, there is Ludwig van Beethoven's powerful "Eroica," revolution in music, which, according to legend, was originally dedicated to the revolutionary Napoleon. On the other, there is the haunting Requiem in C minor by Luigi Cherubini, commissioned by King Louis XVIII, who succeeded Napoleon as ruler. What unites the works, however, is the absolute mastery of craftsmanship—and mutual respect—of the two composers: Beethoven even wished that the Requiem in C minor be played at his funeral (which it was).

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Join Rei Hotoda and the Fresno Philharmonic for an evening of powerful and innovative musical brilliance. The centerpiece is Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a bold and lively masterpiece that was still being shaped at its premiere and has since become one of the most celebrated works in classical music. Pianist Jon Kimura Parker joins the orchestra as soloist. The program also features Ravel’s elegant Le Tombeau de Couperin, written in honor of fallen friends, and Sibelius’s majestic and structure-bending Symphony No. 5.

Vivid and emotional, the third program on our Masterworks series features the lively rhythms of Scottish folk music. Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances leads into Bruch’s virtuosic Scottish Fantasy, performed by American violinist Stefan Jackiw in his Des Moines debut. The concert closes with Beethoven’s triumphant masterpiece, the Eroica Symphony.

The vivacious violin soloist Simone Porter makes her IF Symphony debut performing the Violin Concerto of Ludwig van Beethoven. Porter has performed with the world’s leading orchestras and lights up the stage with remarkable flair. The all-Beethoven program pairs the Violin Concerto with his Third Symphony, the “Eroica,” a bombastic and groundbreaking work that puts the musicians of the Idaho Falls Symphony in the limelight.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis may be the greatest piece never heard. Its musical, technical, and endurance challenges make it incredibly difficult for the chorus. Completed in 1824 (the same year as the 9th Symphony), the totally deaf composer would never attend a full performance of what he regarded as his best work.

One of the world’s most adventurous and versatile chamber ensembles, the Danish String Quartet returns to Ann Arbor with a unique program that includes works by Stravinsky, Beethoven, and film composer and Radiohead founding member Jonny Greenwood. In addition, they’ll perform arrangements of traditional folk tunes and original compositions that trace musical pathways across the North Sea, underlining the group’s belief that “folk tunes are not just part of our repertoire, but an important element of our identity as musicians.”

Heroes are dangerous – they can inspire us to great things, or, if they stumble, shatter our illusions. Elysium by Samy Moussa finds us in the everlasting paradise where heroes dwell; majestic, virtuous and ecstatically triumphant. Beethoven’s Third Symphony lost its original dedication when Napoleon turned from hero to villain and the epigraph simply became ‘Heroic... dedicated to the memory of a great man’; this extraordinary, revolutionary symphony makes a hero of Beethoven himself. Dvořák’s Violin Concerto was not written for a hero so much as a friend and collaborator in Joseph Joachim and it is bursting with Czech folk music influences, especially in its skirling, dancing final movement.

The power of music to suggest our deepest feelings of spiritual awe has been understood since ancient times. In this program, three composers write pieces capture the human yearning for another level of experience. The late great African American composer Olly Wilson drew on his roots in jazz and the music of his African ancestors to suggest the terrifying power of Shango, the ancient Yoruba god of thunder and lightning. In the slow movement of his Fourth Piano Concerto, Beethoven calls to mind the Greek divinity Orpheus who tamed wild beasts with the beauty of his music. Sibelius’ First Symphony plunges deep into the imaginary mystical mythology of prehistoric Finland.
