The acclaimed Brentano String Quartet explores a more intimate and contemplative side of Ludwig van Beethoven in a program shaped by themes of loss, reflection, and quiet drama. Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 18, No. 1, written early in his career, contains a deeply expressive slow movement inspired by the tomb scene from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Where John Zorn draws on a prayer, Ludwig van Beethoven composes one of the most intimate movements in chamber music, and Dmitri Shostakovich presents his final work of this genre with his 15th String Quartet, no words are needed. Intensely melancholic, imbued with profound emotion, and reminiscent of silent farewell prayers, the three works in this program resonate. Between prayer, memory, and farewell, a soundscape of silence unfolds—tentatively exploring between solace and emptiness, between speechlessness and expression. Where words fall silent, another language begins: fragile, intimate, and imbued with that profound humanity which gives voice to the unspeakable, in a way that ultimately only music can.

Irritated with the bustle and bother of city life in Vienna, Beethoven found inspiration for his “Pastoral” Symphony on long, rambling walks in the countryside. The composer weaves shepherd tunes and bird calls into the music in a celebration of nature, amplified in these performances with artwork from the Kimbell Art Museum’s landscape collection. The concert opens with American composer Missy Mazzoli’s ballet suite Orpheus Undone and closes with Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, drawn from a series of poems about the mysteries of the night.

Composed between 1805 and 1806, during a particularly happy period for Beethoven, who was experiencing an intense and significant romance with Josephine Brunswick, the Fourth Piano Concerto , with the lyrical nature of its themes, seems to faithfully capture the composer's joy. The Concerto was first performed privately in the home of Prince Lobkowitz in March 1807, and in public on 22 December 1808 at the Theater an der Wien, within the famous Academy where the composer also presented his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies . Composer Johann Friedrich Reichardt left us a very detailed account of that evening in a letter:

“We sat there from half past six until half past ten in the freezing cold, and we learned that even beautiful things can get boring. Poor Beethoven, who could have earned his first and only profit of the year from this concert, had had difficulties and disagreements in organizing it. […] The singers and orchestra were made up of very heterogeneous elements. It had not even been possible to obtain a dress rehearsal of all the pieces, full of very difficult passages. You will be amazed at all that this most fertile genius and tireless worker accomplished during these four hours. First a Pastoral Symphony or memories of country life, full of lively pictures and images.

To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death in 2027, the season’s first chamber music concert will focus on a lesser-known facet of his oeuvre. After all, wind music is not the genre most readily associated with Beethoven. This makes the Octet in E-flat Major and the Trio for Two Oboes and English Horn all the more surprising: both works grew out of the late 18th-century tradition of Harmoniemusik – music for courtly wind ensembles – yet they already bear Beethoven’s unmistakable musical voice. The programme will continue with one of the great masterpieces of the wind repertoire: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s work, which is also entitled “Nachtmusique”. Here, the serenade’s light-hearted form is transformed into a sound world of extraordinary richness of colour and expressive power. “Exquisite” indeed – as the concert’s title promises.

Nature, itself rich in sound, has always found its way into music – as onomatopoeic imitations of thunder, the lapping of water, or birdsong, but also as an expression of inner "feeling" in the face of its sublime beauty, power, and menace. In the grand opening concert, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and Music Director Daniel Hope dedicate themselves to the work that stands out among musical depictions of nature like the highest mountain peak: Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral ." Beethoven masterfully gives expression to this inner experience of nature without merely "painting" it in sound, even when he has the nightingale, quail, and cuckoo imitated.

The piano trio has long offered composers a direct and personal means of expression, and this program brings together three works that reveal the form from different perspectives. Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 1, No. 1, shows a young composer already expanding the scope of the piano trio, giving each instrument a distinct role and shaping music that moves beyond convention. Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote his G-minor Piano Trio during a period of profound personal loss, and its shifting moods give the work a deeply human intensity. Composed in 1807 for Heinrich Joseph von Collin's tragedy Coriolanus , the overture was the only piece from an original project that included composing an entire cycle of incidental music for this play. Like other Beethoven overtures, this one immediately found a permanent place in the symphonic repertoire, regardless of the performance of the play for which it was conceived. The overture was most likely performed only at the tragedy's premiere, on April 24, 1807, although its music had already been appreciated a month earlier at a concert held at Prince Lobkowitz's palace under Beethoven himself, during which the Fourth Symphony and the Fourth Piano Concerto were also performed . This overture reveals the tragic grandeur of Coriolanus, a character whose historical reality is uncertain. After conquering the Volscian city of Corioli, the hero was exiled by the Romans for his despotic rule. Taking refuge with the Volscians, he decided to take revenge by leading the enemy army against his homeland. As he approached the gates of the city, Coriolanus was joined by his mother Veturia and his wife Volumnia, carrying their two young children in their arms. The two women begged him not to raise arms against Rome. Heeding their fervent prayer, the leader then decided to retreat, but was executed by the Volscians on charges of treason. The entire overture, which opens on a tragic C minor with three celebrated crescendos of string unisons that pave the way for the full orchestral explosion, thrives on the contrast between Coriolanus's fighting spirit, effectively captured in the first theme, and his wife Volumnia's imploring spirit, equally powerfully expressed in the strongly lyrical second theme. The coda is very evocative, where, after the resumption of the introductory lines, the theme slowly dissolves, almost as if to foreshadow the protagonist's tragic end.

The friendship between Bohuslav Martinů and Josef Páleníček is not as well-known as Martinů's friendship with Jan Novák or Vítězslava Kaprálová. Driven by rhythm and bold expression, the vibrant pulse of Mariachitlán by Juan Pablo Contreras moves with confidence and purpose—direct, energized, and alive. Audience favorite Jon Nakamatsu returns to the stage to tackle the ultimate challenge, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, one of the hardest-to-master works in the repertoire. After its premiere in New York City, a critic wrote that “it's great length and extreme difficulties bar it from performances by any but pianists of exceptional technical powers.” Nakamatsu brings command and intensity to this iconic work, creating a gripping exchange between soloist and orchestra. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 stands at the fault line between Classical restraint and emerging Romantic force—bright, propulsive, and charged with forward motion. Apart from its vivid, romantic melodies, what makes Felix Mendelssohn’s Overture to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” a remarkable work is the composer was just 17 and a half years old when he wrote it, making it the most youthful work in the orchestral repertoire that’s regularly heard today. Arnold Schoenberg and Ludwig van Beethoven, conversely, both were 32 and at turning points in their development when they made their contributions to this program. Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 for just 15 musicians not only was his first effort for chamber orchestra, it also came at a pivotal stage in his transition from late-Romantic to atonal music. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 – bold and energetic with touches of humor – was one of his final pieces in a purely classical style. Though the optimistic and innovative work has hints of Haydn and Mozart, it also foreshadows the Beethoven yet to come.
