Under the direction of its new chief conductor, François-Xavier Roth, the SWR Symphony Orchestra presents two revolutionary composers side by side: Ludwig van Beethoven and Helmut Lachenmann. The first, a giant of Viennese Classical music, the second, a post-war sound pioneer. Both not only pushed musical boundaries with their works, but also consistently challenged their audiences' listening habits. Although Lachenmann, who turned 90 in November, strikes a completely different tone than Beethoven, he clearly places himself in the latter's tradition as a rebel and free spirit: "Beethoven was the first to consciously stop composing to please!"

No other contemporary singer's name is as synonymous with the Lied as that of Julian Prégardien. Although also impressive on the operatic stage and in oratorios with his deeply sensitive tenor, the German singer reveals himself particularly intensely in the lyrical, poetic, and romantic genre of the Lied. He repeatedly delves into this cosmos, especially with songs by Schubert, but also by other composers who are at home in this field. To ensure that an orchestra like the CAMERATA—known for its vocal sound and chamber music sensitivity—can also perform in the area of ​​Lieder normally reserved for piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements of two Lied compositions by Beethoven and Schubert were selected. Even in the original, they depict epic song scenes, whose dimensions are all the more enhanced with orchestral support. In this concert, Sweden’s Radio Concert Hall Berwaldhallen and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra welcome for the first time the British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. After the intermission, conductor Yoel Gamzou will the lead the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the British composer William Walton’s emotionally powerful first symphony from 1935.

Jakub Hrůša is not only one of the greatest conductors of our time: the charismatic Czech is also known for his cleverly conceived concert programs, opening up new perspectives on seemingly familiar works. At his concert, audiences can look forward to a truly prime example of this special art: Together with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, he will perform Beethoven's Pastorale and Richard Strauss's Alpine Symphony – two spectacular orchestral spectacles of nature that powerfully transcended the boundaries of what was musically possible at their time. In his monumentally orchestrated Alpine Symphony, Strauss demonstrates not only his stature as a composer but also his brilliant skills as an orchestrator, allowing the vast orchestra to shimmer and radiate in all its colors.

Philippe Herreweghe, a grand seigneur of historical performance practice and clever programming, brings a particularly piquant pair of works into conversation in his ProArte concert. On the one hand, there is Ludwig van Beethoven's powerful "Eroica," revolution in music, which, according to legend, was originally dedicated to the revolutionary Napoleon. On the other, there is the haunting Requiem in C minor by Luigi Cherubini, commissioned by King Louis XVIII, who succeeded Napoleon as ruler. What unites the works, however, is the absolute mastery of craftsmanship—and mutual respect—of the two composers: Beethoven even wished that the Requiem in C minor be played at his funeral (which it was).

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis may be the greatest piece never heard. Its musical, technical, and endurance challenges make it incredibly difficult for the chorus. Completed in 1824 (the same year as the 9th Symphony), the totally deaf composer would never attend a full performance of what he regarded as his best work.

Dvořák’s Violin Concerto was not written for a hero so much as a friend and collaborator in Joseph Joachim and it is bursting with Czech folk music influences, especially in its skirling, dancing final movement.

In this program, three composers write pieces capture the human yearning for another level of experience. The late great African American composer Olly Wilson drew on his roots in jazz and the music of his African ancestors to suggest the terrifying power of Shango, the ancient Yoruba god of thunder and lightning. In the slow movement of his Fourth Piano Concerto, Beethoven calls to mind the Greek divinity Orpheus who tamed wild beasts with the beauty of his music. Nearly 250 years after its completion, it still has a profound emotional impact on audiences. DSO’s Principal Clarinet Gregory Raden gives the world premiere of Dallas-based composer Jon Cziner’s concerto. Music Director Luisi also leads the world premiere of a new work by Jasmine Guo, a film and contemporary concert composer and classical pianist. It’s part of a 30-orchestra consortium performing works commissioned by the Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program for women composers.

He plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin, once owned by the famed Hungarian violinist, Joseph Joachim.

Playing on period Italian instruments, Modigliani Quartet will grace us with works by giants of the string quartet: Haydn’s #67 with its unusual opening, Adagio, and closing movements; then we sample a charmingly rich work written by a young Beethoven while under the tutelage of Papa Haydn. While the key may point to a previous melancholy Schubert work, Brahms threads lightness, joy, and vulnerable beauty throughout his quartet #2 within a tapestry of canons, polyphony, and counterpoint.

Beethoven's piano concertos and symphonies belong to the core of orchestral repertoire but it's some time since we've heard his 2nd piano concerto, in which echoes of Mozart can be heard. Schubert composed his first six symphonies before his 20th birthday, although during his lifetime they were only performed in private circles. His 2nd symphony was probably performed for the first time in 1877. While Brahms found them interesting Dvořák was very taken with their melodies, harmonic progressions and the exquisite detail in Schubert's orchestration.

The final word belongs to Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 2, a hidden gem that feels as if a mirror was held to Beethoven as it was composed. Prize-winner at the 2021 Leeds Piano Competition, Ariel’s first visit to Nottingham in 2023 saw him praised as an ‘adventurous intellect’ with a ‘calm maturity’. The two pieces he brings with him on this visit explore the development and experimentation of their composers. The first of Beethoven’s Op. 31 sonatas this season showcases the composer’s growing confidence and originality, blending humour and lyricism with delightful results. The second book of Debussy’s Preludes were not as well received as the first during his lifetime, but the more advanced harmonies and style are paired with a sensuous beauty as Debussy takes us from autumn leaves and mists, through Spain, Egypt, to Peter Pan and Dickens, and finally to the fireworks in Paris.

Rounding out the evening is Beethoven’s charming Duo No. 1, for clarinet and bassoon.

For Beethoven, one thing was certain: “To play without passion is unforgivable.” That certainly won’t happen to us on our tour of Germany, which kicks off in Bamberg, because musical leaps of joy are guaranteed. With our principal conductor on the podium, we will devote ourselves to a multifaceted and sophisticated programme. Jakub Hrůša once beautifully pointed out that with us, “every little musical detail can become a miracle” – a notion that aptly describes our work together. Among other pieces, we will be performing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto, which he premiered in Vienna in 1800 – a refreshing work with effective surprises, which will be brilliantly performed by the acclaimed pianist Lukas Sternath. We will also immerse ourselves in two marvellous orchestral nature spectacles with folkloric melodies: in Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony”, completed in 1808, we atmospherically portray various scenes in the countryside – such as an exuberant festival “of striking humour”, in which we playfully poke fun at the clumsy music-making of a village band. Even a thunderstorm rolls past – just like in Strauss’s magnificent Alpine Symphony, which premiered in 1915: with an impressive array of instruments including cowbells, organ, thunder sheets, wind machines and more than 60 motifs, the powerful soundscape of this symphonic mountain hike takes shape – an utterly joyful musical adventure for us.

The music of Beethoven has had an enduring influence on contemporary film music composers, and John Williams is no exception. And much like Beethoven, Williams’ use of themes associated with specific characters or ideas—think Imperial March, Luke’s Theme—enhance an audience’s connection to the story. They both employ rich orchestrations, evoking powerful and memorable experiences in the lives they touch.

The Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) joins the BSO for an exciting side-by-side performance of Strauss’ On the Beautiful Blue Danube. The BSO then continues with Brahms’ passionate Symphony No. 3 and acclaimed violinist Sirena Huang returns for a rousing finale with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. In addition to this matinee performance, there will be a 7:30 p.m. evening performance later in the day.

The unique timbre of the viola—rich, dark, and soulful—has made it the instrument of choice for composers seeking to add even more luscious beauty to chamber ensembles. CMS proudly offers a one-of-a-kind program that includes a pair of violas in every work: from Vaughan Williams’s haunting Phantasy Quintet, to violist-composer Brett Dean’s poignant lament, to Mozart’s joyful and uplifting C-major Quintet, one of six he composed that truly put the viola quintet on the chamber music map.

Jonathan Leshnoff’s Elegy, commissioned by our Music Director Yaniv Attar in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, is a deeply moving work resounding with beauty and introspection. Sharon Farber’s Concerto for Cello and Narrator blends powerful storytelling with the soulful voice of the cello in a unique and captivating experience. The cello, along with a narrator, recounts the story of an actor who survived the Holocaust and saved an American pilot and 150 Jewish children. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”), a masterpiece that celebrates heroism and the triumph of the human spirit.

A cherished presence on Washington Performing Arts stages, Midori returns with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute for a program that traverses lyricism, passion, and brilliance. Anchored by Beethoven’s radiant “Spring” Sonata, the recital interweaves romantic nuance in the works of Clara and Robert Schumann, Poulenc’s bold contrasts, and the virtuosic sweep of Schubert’s Rondo Brillante—all brought to life with Midori’s musical insight and expressive power. A new work written for Midori by New York-based violinist and composer Che Buford combines violin and electronics. Buford describes their compositions as exploring the possibilities of timbre and acoustical phenomena and connecting them to elements of place, memory, poetry, and the quotidian.

Beethoven's piano sonatas are profound explorations of the great themes of music, life, and human existence. They are among the greatest masterpieces in the history of music and reflect both his personal journey and the evolution of music. For his concert, Víkingur Ólafsson has chosen Sonatas No. 27 and 30. The latter is considered one of the summit works of piano literature. It combines clarity and depth, and especially the second movement, a meditative Adagio, allows space for intimate reflection, while the finale, with its varying themes, showcases Beethoven's creativity. Beethoven's great predecessor, Johann Sebastian Bach, and one of his famous successors, Franz Schubert, are also featured in the program with other works, highlighting significant events in European piano music. Invited by the Dresden Philharmonic in cooperation with DK Deutsche Klassik.

In another LSO tradition, our annual musical salute to our veterans once again brings together the favorite with the unfamiliar. Violinist Elissa Lee Koljonen -- who amazed us back in 2021 with her reading of the romantic Violin Concerto of Samuel Barber -- returns to La Crosse with a rarity: the Violin Sonata of Aaron Copland -- "The Dean of American Composers" -- in a stunning new orchestral version. And after intermission, in a moment we've long been preparing for, one of the mightiest symphonies of all time: Beethoven's revolutionary "Eroica", with its thrilling call to freedom.
