Presented first at ARTECHOUSE Houston, the performance pairs ROCO musicians with advanced technology, translating real-time neural activity into immersive visuals that react to the sound waves emitted by the musical instruments.

Designed in partnership with neuroscientists and digital artists, Neurofeedback invites audiences to consider how music moves us emotionally and how we process it biologically. In the second half, the choir and orchestra combine with Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music,” which pays homage to Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. By the time Ludwig van Beethoven began composing his ninth symphony in 1823, his hearing had almost completely deteriorated. Despite his battles with hearing loss, Beethoven was able to compose a symphony that instantly became a masterwork, of which there are few that are as acclaimed or beloved. The grandiose finale introduces the immortal “Ode to Joy” theme, signifying the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and serving as a testament to artistic resilience. The UMD Symphony Orchestra is joined by the UMD Concert Choir for a performance of this legendary symphony, providing a bombastic and joyful conclusion to the School of Music’s season!

Looking to the future, the MSO has commissioned composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer to create a world premiere work in celebration of our 100th Anniversary. EARTH: A Choral Symphony will celebrate our beautiful planet and humanity’s place on it. Composed in four movements, the piece explores themes of truth and possibility, with each movement touching on a different aspect of the wonder of Earth and our place in its story. John DeMain and the Madison Symphony Orchestra, famed Met Opera soprano Ailyn Pérez, and three choruses, will weave together elements of the story in these world premiere performances. Returning for his second BSO program this season, Dima Slobodeniouk leads one of the American composer John Adams’ first major works, Harmonium for chorus and orchestra. Written in 1981 for the San Francisco Symphony, this grand, half-hour work sets a poem by John Donne and two by Emily Dickinson in gradually unfolding, majestic textures. With its slowly evolving harmonic fields and rhythmic energy, Harmonium marked the future Pulitzer Prize winner and composer of the operas Doctor Atomic and Nixon in China as an important and original voice in American music. Beethoven's larger-than-life, ecstatic Symphony No. 9 closes the season.

Beethoven - Symphony No. 9

It will not surprise fans of the probing, insightful pianist Víkingur Ólafsson that his newest project goes deep. Previously, he devoted an entire season of performances to Bach’s Goldberg Variations—playing the cycle for 88 concerts in total, including at Cal Performances in May 2024—because, in his words, “I wanted to know how deeply I can dive into a composition and how many different facets I can discover in it.” He won a Grammy this year for his sterling recording of that work.

With three gems from chamber music, the Busch Trio celebrates the triumph of art over the adversities of life: In his Piano Trio K. 502, the immortal Mozart plays with light and shade, yet his choice of the key of B-flat major underscores the hope for a better world. "May the day be lost to us on which there was not a single dance!" Friedrich Nietzsche already expressed this sentiment – ​​and so we gladly gather under the choreographic direction of Juraj Valčuha for several playful, melodious dances of joy on our instruments. The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók found much inspiration for this during his beloved "folk song collecting trips." His suite was composed in 1923 for the 50th anniversary of the unification of Buda, Óbuda, and Pest into the new capital, Budapest. This large-scale orchestral work, featuring plenty of percussion, celesta, and piano, contains a whole series of dances – sometimes elegiac, sometimes stamping, sometimes cheerful, and culminating in a triumphant celebration of joie de vivre.

Thanks to Mozart, the horn acquired its first letters of nobility at a time when it was considered only as an instrument for hunting and the outdoors. Both noble and joyful, enriched by a slow movement imbued with great tenderness, the Second Concerto (1783) highlights the new head of the OPRL horn section, Margaux Ortman. A mature work, Mozart's Symphony No. 39 (1788) is inspired by the theater, and is similar to Don Giovanni in its incessant quest for colors, the presence of deep and meditative passages, and this ability to shape melodies like true lines of song. School classes from the Beethoven-Gymnasium, which celebrates its 400th anniversary in 2026 and the school Beethoven himself once attended, will show us how relevant these are and what we can learn today from studying this symphony.

Tonight you will hear the Hague premiere of Dance – the highly acclaimed cello concerto by British composer Anna Clyne. As one of the most performed contemporary composers, she drew her inspiration from the mystical verses of Persian poet Rumi. The work’s five movements – focusing on themes such as loss, love and acceptance – demonstrate her ability to translate deep human emotions into music. Cellist Camille Thomas does full justice to the poetic power of the piece.

Internationally renowned violinist and Philharmonia favorite Shunske Sato guides us through the connection between works by some of the 18th and 19th centuries’ most beloved composers.
