The result is a complete anthology for clarinet trio, from which three pieces were chosen for an exciting journey. It begins with the healing power of bel canto sounds. For after a breakdown in Italy, Vincenzo Bellini enthusiast Mikhail Glinka essentially healed himself with the composition of his Trio pathétique. John Ireland then takes us to Britain's coast, complete with a sea shanty, before we reach the summit with the trio titan Beethoven.

Friday Favorites: Beethoven “Emperor” Concerto

The program features Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony, whose four opening notes are recognized the world over and whose sheer power remains unmatched. One of the most popular symphonies of all time, every performance brings something memorable to enthusiastic audiences. Brahms composed his Academic Festival Overture as a musical thank-you for his awarding of an honorary doctorate. The lighthearted work incorporates several student “beer hall” songs and spotlights Brahms’ sense of humor. Cellist Zlatomir Fung performs Dvořák’s glorious Cello Concerto, adored for its nobility and sentimentality.

In 2024, she won the coveted UBS Young Artist Award: the young, up-and-coming cellist from Salzburg, Julia Hagen. In addition to the opportunity to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann at the renowned Lucerne Festival, which the press hailed as "brilliant," the award places the talented, full-blooded musician in an illustrious gallery, including names such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sol Gabetta, Martin Helmchen, Vilde Frang, and Kian Soltani, for whom the award has once opened the door to international careers. In the master concert at the Mozarteum Foundation, the artist and her piano partner Annika Treutler will devote themselves to the cello works of great composers, including a detour into the world of fairy tales.

The three “Bs” of classical music – this is the designation given by the conductor Hans von Bülow to the great masters Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.

Our sixth subscription concert will feature works by composers whose names also begin with the letter “B”, although this is a slightly less usual selection.

We begin with Benjamin Britten. As one of Britain’s most significant composers and a major figure of the 20th century in general, Britten attained fame largely through his operas. It is worth noting that he composed at a very early age – and unlike most composers, he explicitly used this fact in his more “serious” work. At the age of 20 he wrote a chamber piece for string orchestra, Simple Symphony, and in each of its movements he quoted a motif that had occurred to him as a child.

Desolate and contemplating suicide because of the inevitable advance of his deafness, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote that his destiny to create art alone would keep him alive. Written at the same time as his struggle with depression, Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (Creatures of Prometheus) is an epic battle between darkness and light. Beethoven emerged from his darkness to create transcendent works of beauty and humanity, in spite of – or perhaps because of – his struggles.

The stage-talented star clarinetist David Orlowsky visits Sara Kulturhus with his self-written, hypnotic solo piece Shadow Dancer. A dramatic evening is promised, loaded with emotion and courageous equilibration. As the icing on the cake, the program ends with Beethoven's never-failing masterpiece, the Fifth Symphony, also known as the Symphony of Fate.

In March, violinist David Grimal will join ERSO as both soloist and conductor, meaning no separate conductor will be on stage for this performance. The programme features Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto, a work dedicated to his close friend and one of the 19th century’s most renowned violinists, Hungarian Joseph Joachim. This concerto is considered one of the four great German violin concertos. The second half of the evening will showcase Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8—the shortest and most Haydn-like of his symphonies, filled with unexpected musical wit and lighthearted charm.

Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director Designate — leads the World Premiere of a new orchestration of Frederic Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated. Featuring orchestrations created by composers representing the dynamism of the American musical landscape, the work centers a Chilean protest anthem as a hymn to the power of communities to effect social change. The People United… echoes the defiant spirit of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, which opens the program.

Beethoven’s symphony features birdsong melodies he transcribed, while the great 20th-century Finnish composer Rautavaara’s work is a “Concerto for Birds and Orchestra”, with the recorded sounds of curlews, shore larks, whooper swans and others the soloists running throughout. Mayrhofer’s Recycling Concerto was written for the virtuosic percussionist Vivi Vassileva. Together they have collected and tuned an enormous battery of percussion from repurposed rubbish, which Vassileva makes full use of over the course of this powerful and thought-provoking work.

Welcome to a concert featuring Beethoven's timeless tones in conjunction with works by four other remarkable composers, whose creativity and unique voices have contributed significantly to the modern musical landscape.

Rhythmic energy characterizes both Nørgård and Martinus' works. In  Fire over Water  both fire and water are present and an intense rhythmic energy describes the contrasting elements. In Martinus' work the rhythmic energy is shown in an expressive dialogue between violin and cello and at the same time with a refined balance between the two instruments.

A rhythmic intensity is continued in the alternation with lyrical passages in Milhaud's suite inspired by the French medieval atmosphere with musical depictions of everything from jesters to hunting scenes.

Fabrizio Falasca is considered among the leading Italian violinists of his generation. He regularly performs as soloist in the most prestigious theaters and festivals throughout the world, such as the Royal Festival Hall in London, Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, Salle Garnier in Montecarlo, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli, to name a few. He is in demand as a guest concertmaster with world class orchestras including the Philharmonia of London, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and regularly leads the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Orchestra, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra, Teatro dell'Opera Orchestra in Rome, Petruzzelli Orchestra in Bari. In 2016, he won the Concertmaster position of the Tyroler Symphonie Orchester Innsbruck, and in the same year he joined the Philharmonia Orchestra in London as Assistant Leader, position currently held. In 2022 he won the Concertmaster position of the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari Orchestra. He regularly performs chamber music with his string quartet, the Philharmonia Chamber Players, and with musicians such as B. Canino, F. Petracchi, J. Ju, and A. Pompa-Baldi among others. Falasca is often featured on the Italian national broadcasting Radio RAI, as well as on BBC Radio, and is a prolific recording artist for various labels such as Centaur Records, CPO, Aulicus Classics, Amadeus and Brilliant Classics. He is a laureate of the Vittorio Veneto and the Postacchini International Violin Competitions. Fabrizio studied with Salvatore Accardo at the Stauffer Academy, with Felice Cusano at the Fiesole Music School, and Dora Schwarzberg. They recently toured with a complete Beethoven quartet cycle which they have also recorded. As the finale of the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society’s 25/26, the Elias quartet present an all-Beethoven programme, celebrating the composer’s genius at writing breathtaking, dramatic works for the string quartet. The programme opens with Quartet No.12 in E flat major, one of the last pieces the composer completed before his death, followed by the second of his middle period Opus 59 quartets. Commissioned by Count Razumovsky, these are considered to have been a revolution in music written for the quartet – so completely original that in one stroke they redefined the entire paradigm of the quartet genre.

Dressed as a man and calling herself “Fidelio”, Leonore surreptitiously gains the confidence of the jailer Rocco and his daughter Marzelline, thus gaining access to the high security tract where her husband Florestan has been despotically incarcerated by Don Pizarro. Florestan is in mortal danger, but this does not intimidate his wife, who is determined to liberate him. Finally, however, the two of them can only be rescued by an emissary from the monarch. At the end, a Utopia in the form of a final chorus sets the stage aglow, not only as a plea for freedom and justice, but also concurrently as a condemnation of the anxieties and restrictions of human existence.

Bernstein's Age of Anxiety, composed between 1947 and 1949 and based on a poem by the British poet Wystan Hugh Auden, describes the uncertain and changeable attitude to life of people after the Second World War. The poem tells the story of four young people who wash down their fears and feelings of loneliness in a New York bar with copious amounts of alcohol, enter into changing relationships and desperately seek stability and faith in a world that has become strange.

Elliott has long been a sought-after performer in the USA, but now he is also making a name for himself on this side of the Atlantic. Sterling Elliott presents himself in the Debut series and has another ambassador of the US classical music scene on board with the highly romantic Cello Sonata by Samuel Barber.

Beethoven’s dreamlike Moonlight Sonata is followed by Robert Schumann’s mighty C Major Fantasy, dedicated to fellow virtuoso Liszt. Scriabin’s luminous Sonata No. 2 — inspired by the sea, with its gentle, moonlit waves and stormy climax — leads to Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, a masterpiece of shimmering colors and breathtaking virtuosity.
