Two years ago, a young conductor thrilled orchestra and audience alike with a poetic programme and exciting conducting: now Hossein Pishkar is back with a programme that is at least as exciting. Two important orchestral works about two lovers form the programme: one work is a first highlight of the art of orchestration – excerpts from Hector Berlioz‘ Roméo et Juliette. Music about the theatre’s most famous tragic lovers. The second is one of the masterpieces of the early 20th century by Maurice Ravel, centred around the most beautiful happy love story of antiquity: Daphnis and Chloé, a pair of youthful, shy shepherds in love. And right in the middle of it all: The shooting star of Romantic music, the clarinet, personified on this evening by the wonderful Sharon Kam. The Israeli-born clarinettist plays works that are related to the above-mentioned works and were written 100 years apart: Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 and Claude Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie.

Stefan Willich is the founder and conductor of the World Doctors Orchestra. He studied violin, chamber music, and conducting in Stuttgart and Berlin, and has participated in prestigious conducting workshops with Sergiu Celibidache (Munich), Leon Fleisher (Boston, Tanglewood) and Leon Barzin (Paris). Besides his performances with WDO, he regularly appears as guest conductor mainly in Germany and the USA where he is the principal guest conductor of the CityMusic Cleveland Orchestra.

As every year, the 1st Loh Concert sets the mood for the Christmas season. You can hear ballet music and dance suites by Peter I. Tchaikovsky (»The Nutcracker«, »Mozartiana«) and Ludwig van Beethoven (»Prometheus«). And of course the program ends with the singing of Christmas carols together - this is also a tried and tested tradition of the Loh Concert during Advent. At the same time, it is a forum for selected prizewinners of the Sondershausen Carl Schroeder Competition: Here they have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and musicality in front of an audience.

Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005, the Engegård quartet has become one of Norway’s most sought after ensembles. Their bold fresh interpretation of classical repertoire, combined with their deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots has attracted international acclaim. Following the sellout success last season of the performance of Danish folk music at MCCS by the Danish Quartet, the Engegård quartet will perform Norwegian Folk music for string quartet. Their programme also includes a work which was premiered in 2024 and specially composed for the Engegård quartet by the leading British composer Julian Anderson,  currently Professor of Composition and Composer in Residence at Guildhall School of Music & Drama .In addition they offer classical chamber music repertoire by Mendelssohn and Beethoven’s  “Harp” quartet named after the pizzicato sections which are reminiscent of the plucking of a harp. This is an opportunity to experience a wide range of experiences in the genre of chamber music.

»Anyone who preserves the ability to see beauty will never grow old.« These words by Franz Kafka are wonderfully fitting for our esteemed Honorary Conductor, who has been a legend on the podium for a long time. Whilst he is approaching the age of 100, he still has a passion for meticulous attention to detail. He also has a congenial way of passing his positive energy on to the audience with his music. When asked what his secret is, he answered: »The love of music. It’s like a fire that you can’t put out – it inspires me, it challenges me.« And he added very sympathetically: »I’m an ordinary old man, but when you’re in love at the same time, it releases unexpected power reserves.« Herbert Blomstedt is a master of the art of interpretation, and his deeply human and keen spirit is unmistakable. As a sovereign connoisseur of the work in question, he always gives them a very personal interpretation. His characteristic trademarks are small but precise gestures or caressing hand movements. Added to this comes the charisma of an artist who is completely at peace with himself, who no longer needs to prove himself to anyone and performs with unwavering joy. In his self-created programmes, he likes to focus on unknown repertoire from his Swedish homeland – but in keeping with the motto that »old love never dies«, he regularly returns to his musical favourites. Sinfonia da Camera principal trombonist Jim Pugh takes center stage for two concerti showcasing his versatility and virtuosity. The Concerto after Mendelssohn for Trombone and Orchestra, by composer-in-residence David Canfield, highlights trombone virtuosity and features quotations from beloved works such as Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor and Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The three movements of Nathaniel Shilkret’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra showcase a myriad of musical styles, from lush Romanticism to big band era boogie-woogie. The concert begins with the luminously evocative Serenade for Strings by Edward Elgar in three short movements. Continuing Sinfonia’s multiyear Beethoven cycle, the program concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s brilliant and lean Symphony No. 4.

Famous for its use in Brief Encounter Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto is the epitome of heart on the sleeve emotion. Played by the brilliant Jeneba Kanneh-Mason it will be a smash. It is framed by Kodaly’s thrilling 'Galanta Dances' with their exuberant Hungarian rhythms and Beethoven’s extraordinary ‘Eroica’ which dwarfed all previous symphonies and, with its haunting funeral march and startling scherzo opened the way for the romantic symphonies of the 19th century to follow.

She is now a regular visitor to Wigmore Hall, and her programme is themed around goodbyes.

In 1824, Schubert composed his six German Dances for his student and infatuation, Countess Caroline Esterházy. The music remained hidden in a private collection for nearly 70 years until it resurfaced decades after his death. Upon rediscovery, Universal Edition commissioned Anton Webern to arrange the work for chamber orchestra, resulting in a transformation praised as a ‘miracle of precision, tonal differentiation, and glowingly shaded colours’.

A composer’s imagination is a dangerous place at the best of times; still, nothing in music quite tops the fabulous, opium-fuelled phantasmagoria that is Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. Born from unrequited desire, and sweeping from glittering romance to the foot of the guillotine, it continues to startle and amaze.
