Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, celebrated for her expressive depth and technical prowess. Take a walk with the BSO! For this concert, we will show our appreciation and thanks for nature’s bounty by playing two well-known and beloved works that celebrate the outdoors. First, we’ll envision the rolling hills and fields of the harvest with music from the ballet repertoire through American composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. After intermission, settle in for another view of the beauty of nature in all its peace and ferocity as the BSO performs the legendary “Pastoral” Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. In his Sixth Symphony in F Major, Beethoven explores good feelings, calm, and the outright fear of a mighty storm in the five movements that make up this expression of love for the outdoors that sustained his soul during some of his darkest personal moments.

Praised for his “unfailingly communicative” playing, Leon McCawley performs a programme full of contrasts. Beethoven’s dramatic early sonatas appeared like a bolt of lightning to Viennese audiences, yet also acknowledged the tradition of Mozart and Haydn. The mood changes with Rachmaninov’s study, “Sea and the Seagulls”, picturing a desolate grey sea, and reflecting the composer’s exile after the Russian Revolution. The following pieces are more upbeat, with Liszt’s rewriting of a pastoral organ work by Bach, before a virtuosic concert piece that the young prodigy Mendelssohn completed after becoming infatuated with a pianist while on his Grand Tour.

Bold, provocative and brilliant, Federico Colli has commanded attention since winning the Gold Medal at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012 and has built a reputation as a ‘pianist likely to dominate the world stage in years to come’ (International Piano Magazine). For his debut at the Royal Concert Hall he brings Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, whose imperious opening sets the tone for a dynamic, epically-scaled dialogue between soloist and orchestra. As expected, Beethoven’s gestures are grand and heroic but there’s also room for great tenderness in the slow movement, which so impressed conductor Leonard Bernstein that he adopted its initial theme for the song ‘Somewhere’ in West Side Story.

Originating from the Netherlands, this quartet consists of four exceptional musicians who specialise in historically informed performance practice as well as chamber music. The name ‘Narratio’ refers to the art of Rhetoric and illustrates the quartets focus on storytelling and interaction both between the musicians and between the quartet and the audience. The first programme also includes Britten’s Second Quartet, given its première at tonight’s venue on 21 November 1945 in a concert marking the exact 250th anniversary of the death of Purcell: its third movement is a Chacony (similar to the passacaglia), a form particularly close to the Baroque composer’s heart.

Join the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for their first Harris Theater appearance of the season. Acclaimed pianist Anne-Marie McDermott takes the stage with a group of world-class wind players, offering classics written for various combinations of instruments. To close the program, the full cast gathers for Poulenc’s effervescent Sextet for Winds and Piano, which the composer described as “an homage to the wind instruments I have loved from the moment I began composing.”

There are ghosts and devils scattered over tonight's concert with a loose hand. The "Geistertrioen" is arguably among Beethoven's best-known piano trios and certainly not a work you should fool yourself into hearing performed in the concert hall. And what is it that is so ghostly about it? It is its long and strikingly instrumented second movement that creeps somberly under the skin and seems more like background music to a horror film than any other work by Beethoven. Speculation that the music originates from drafts of an opera based on Shakespeare's Macbeth is probably not correct. Rather, the nickname is about the fact that Beethoven's student Carl Czerny noticed that the music made him think of the ghost scene in another work by Shakespeare - namely Hamlet . And the extremely appropriate nickname has stuck since this dramatic and deeply emotional work saw the light of day in 1808.

Bernard Labadie marks his first performances with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in this program of life-affirming energy, grandeur and strength with works by three giants of Western classical music, all written in the influential last decade of the 18th century. A pair of glorious and masterful operatic overtures open each half of the program, both written by Mozart within weeks of one another in the fall of 1791, and just a couple of months before his untimely death. Beethoven’s first piano concerto is performed by Jonathan Biss (“one of today's foremost Beethoven exponents” – Chicago Tribune), and the program closes with Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 – his second to last – nicknamed the “Drum Roll” for its powerful and mysterious opening.

Celebrate the BPO’s 90th anniversary with a program that echoes the orchestra’s inaugural concert in 1935. The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus adds its voices to the rich tapestry of sound. Beethoven’s “Ninth” is always a momentous event, so we’re thrilled to present two performances of this beloved piece. Known as “Ode to Joy” because of the familiar theme in the symphony’s fourth movement, it’s the first symphony to incorporate vocal soloists and chorus into what was previously a purely instrumental genre. We’re delighted to welcome the acclaimed Worcester Chorus of Music Worcester to our stage along with four outstanding soloists to bring this monumental yet whimsical composition to life. But first, our program opens with an important work by Margaret Bonds, noted as one of the first Black composers and performers to gain recognition in the United States. Written in 1964 after the composer’s visit to Montgomery, Alabama, the Montgomery Variations fervently examines seminal events from the civil-rights movement.
