Featuring the full range of American choral music, we celebrate the music brought to our shores by Americans who arrived from all over the world. Our concert will celebrate that rich diversity with music by Americans from Europe, Asia, and Africa. Pieces range from the German-American composer Johann Friedrich Peter who worked in a Moravian Church around the time of the American Revolution, to the heritage of 19th and 20th century Jewish composers from Central Europe, to the evocative sounds of contemporary Korean-American composer Bora Yoon.

Through three distinct one-act operas, we explore the shifting nature of identity, hidden motivations, and the often-absurd aspects of human relationships, ultimately questioning what truly shapes our sense of self.

This marks the first collaboration between the Chorale and the highly innovative MUSE/IQUE, featuring the songs Stand By Me, What A Wonderful World, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, and more, along with popular choral work. This concert will feature works by American composers. On the program will be the well-known and endearing work by Randall Thompson, “Frostiana”, which sets seven poems by Robert Frost to music. Emma Lou Diemer, who recently passed away, wrote “Three Madrigals”, a work set to three Shakespearean texts. To round out the program, the chorus will sing two works by groundbreaking composer Florence Price, “Praise the Lord” and “Resignation”, Ola Gjeilo’s haunting setting of “Ubi Caritas, and  Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on this Shining Night” and “Dirait-on!”  Organist Joshua Ehlebracht will perform a special prelude as a part of the concert which begins at 4 pm.

The annual free community concert this season features selections from Mozart’s Symphony No. 1 in E-flat Major, Debussy’s Gymnopedies, Ravel’s Bolero, and Frostiana, a setting of Robert Frost’s poems in a seven-movement suite of choral art songs with chamber orchestra by Randall Thompson. The evening also features the world premiere of a new piece by a Music-COMP student. Conducted by VSO Music Director Andrew Crust.

Voices Of America: Come Sunday

Our season concludes with music that inspires peace and hope in times of upheaval and uncertainty. The tranquility of the English countryside in The Banks of Green Willow, Silvestrov's serene and meditative prayer for Peace in Ukraine, and the sacred a cappella choruses of The Peaceable Kingdom lead us to Haydn's powerful and climactic choral work. Widely acknowledged as a call for peace, the jubilant finale reflects strength and hope.
