In the mid-1930s, with fascism on the rise in Europe, Randall Thompson composed The Peaceable Kingdom—a powerful choral meditation on the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Our program pairs this monumental work with excerpts from a modern response: Walk in Beauty, Walk in Light by Judy A. Rose. Also featured: the winners of Cerddorion’s 2026 Emerging Composers Competition.

Combined Bienen School choirs and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble join forces for a unique collaboration exploring music of awe, reverence, and fate. Brahms’s noble Begräbnisgesang (Burial Song) offers a moment of reflective solemnity, setting the stage for the raw energy of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in its thrilling arrangement for chorus and wind ensemble. This unforgettable night showcases the full expressive spectrum of voices and winds from the sacred to the elemental.

Our season concludes with music that inspires peace and hope in times of upheaval and uncertainty. The tranquility of the English countryside in The Banks of Green Willow, Silvestrov's serene and meditative prayer for Peace in Ukraine, and the sacred a cappella choruses of The Peaceable Kingdom lead us to Haydn's powerful and climactic choral work. Widely acknowledged as a call for peace, the jubilant finale reflects strength and hope.

Our concert will celebrate that rich diversity with music by Americans from Europe, Asia, and Africa. Pieces range from the German-American composer Johann Friedrich Peter who worked in a Moravian Church around the time of the American Revolution, to the heritage of 19th and 20th century Jewish composers from Central Europe, to the evocative sounds of contemporary Korean-American composer Bora Yoon.

This concert will feature works by American composers. On the program will be the well-known and endearing work by Randall Thompson, “Frostiana”, which sets seven poems by Robert Frost to music. Emma Lou Diemer, who recently passed away, wrote “Three Madrigals”, a work set to three Shakespearean texts. To round out the program, the chorus will sing two works by groundbreaking composer Florence Price, “Praise the Lord” and “Resignation”, Ola Gjeilo’s haunting setting of “Ubi Caritas, and  Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on this Shining Night” and “Dirait-on!”  Organist Joshua Ehlebracht will perform a special prelude as a part of the concert which begins at 4 pm.
