She was a fellow student of Debussy, admired by Saint-Saëns, and encouraged by the publisher Alphonse Leduc to create ever new works: Mélanie Bonis, a French composer who fell into obscurity after her death in 1937. Her impressionistic atmospheric picture Le Songe de Cléopâtre (The Dream of Cleopatra) from 1909 is beguilingly beautiful in its sophisticated orchestration and intoxicatingly sensual in its sound. A real discovery! The organ concerto by the contemporary Swiss composer Valentin Villard, written exactly one hundred years later, is also sonicly fascinating: it begins shimmering and undulating and ends with a rushing apotheosis. All of this is exactly the right thing for the dazzling star organist Anna Lapwood, who, to top it all off, also presents a French classic: the monumental organ symphony by Saint-Saëns. At her side: David Reiland from Belgium, head of the Orchestre National de Lorraine and the Sinfonietta Lausanne.

It couldn't be more Christmassy! The anticipation of the upcoming holidays is audible in this concert full of Christmas tunes, sleigh rides, and Christmas wishes. The focus is on the music for Erich Wolfgang Korngold's fairytale ballet "The Snowman": Colombine and her admirer Pierrot attempt to escape from the clutches of Uncle Pantaloon – and succeed with the help of a snowman. The story is narrated. Finally, things get particularly festive with Otto Nicolai's Christmas Overture, featuring ever-changing variations of the chorale "Vom Himmel hoch."

For Ravel, it was an epiphany: "Only after I first heard 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' did I know what music is." In his music for "Daphnis et Chloé," he presented sound in a completely different way, magnificently and expansively. In the splendid isolation on the island of Ischia, the late William Walton was no longer concerned with revolution. He enjoyed—and longed for—England.

For its grand return to Liège, the Orchestre National de Metz Grand Est presents an evening dedicated to the best of French music from the 20th century. The concert navigates through the impressionist waters of Debussy's "La mer," from the gentle lapping of the waves to the stormy tempests, ventures into the whimsical and fateful whirl of Ravel's "La valse," breathes in the evening scents of Lili Boulanger, and plunges into the Baudelairean universe of Dutilleux's Concerto, with the passionate Edgar Moreau at the cello. Under the baton of Belgian conductor David Reiland, known for his mastery of color and rhythm, the evening promises to be an elegantly orchestrated journey.
