It was perhaps the first oratorio concert and also the first classical open-air concert in post-war Germany. Almost a year before their official founding, on July 29, 1945, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, under the name Konzertgesellschaft, performed Haydn's oratorio The Creation with the Nuremberg Teachers' Choir (LGV) in the ruins of St. Sebaldus Church, which was missing its roof and spires. The vocal soloists came from the opera house, and the conductor was Karl Demmer, then head of the LGV. It was like a dawn from darkness into light. In commemoration of this legendary event, The Creation is on the program of our double concert in March 2026. Also performing: a top-class solo ensemble and the Nuremberg Concert Choirs. Chief Conductor Jonathan Darlington will be conducting.

80 Years Of Nsym: Haydn's Creation

. He is an internationally celebrated grand seigneur of the conductor's baton, a universally respected veteran conductor: Thomas Sanderling, born in 1942 in Novosibirsk. In 2017, he became head of the city's symphony orchestra, but resigned in 2022 in protest against Putin's invasion of Ukraine. In our Russian program, he conducts the overture to Borodin's national opera Prince Igor , the rarely heard Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2 – with the Chinese-Canadian star pianist Sheng Cai as soloist – and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, with whom Sanderling was friends. The work is a bold, even cheeky surprise package. After the victorious end of the Great Patriotic War in 1945, the officials in the USSR, especially Stalin, were expecting a monumental socialist "Super-Ninth"—with soloists, choir, and large orchestra modeled on Beethoven's "Ninth." But instead, Shostakovich composed a witty, sparkling neoclassical symphony, imbued with the spirit of Haydn and simply declaring: "Hurrah, the war is over!"

No Rhythm, No Music, No Fun! is a truly cool show lasting roughly an hour! On various percussion instruments—marimba, vibraphone, drum set, pipe drum, cajon, cowbells, surdo, castanets, and many more—the Drum Twins play well-known melodies from classical, pop, and film. They explain the importance of rhythm in music, how to recognize time signatures, the role of tempo and instrument choice in composers, and how to clap along properly! And the audience gets involved, introducing the individual pieces, learning simple rhythms as body percussion, and (hopefully) laughing along a lot. The Drum Twins are both professional orchestral percussionists and regularly perform on the world's major stages. With this concert, they want to share their enthusiasm for music and, above all, for rhythm.

Our program takes you into the vibrant, richly colored, and unfathomable world of the Orient, as great composers of the past have timelessly captured it musically – as a magical, exotic realm full of beauty and irresistible temptations. Right in the overture to his opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart trumps it with a blaring "Alla Turca." Abduction? Seduction! Rimsky-Korsakov's Symphonic Suite Scheherazade , named after the beautiful princess and seductive narrator of the oriental tales from One Thousand and One Nights , is enchantingly magical . And the Orient also resonates in Rachmaninoff's hit Piano Concerto in C minor – in a theme that evidently fascinated Miklos Rózsa while he was working on his film score for Ben-Hur . The soloist is Russian pianist Dmitry Masleev, who thrilled the symphony audience in October 2023. Eduard Topchyan, conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, will conduct.

The Black Pirate (USA 1926) – eight decades before Captain Jack Sparrow sailed through southern climes, Douglas Fairbanks portrayed an adventurous and daring privateer in The Black Pirate (German: Der Seeräuber ) – already familiar to some from the Robin Hood film, which the Symphony Orchestra presented in January 2022. This time, Fairbanks invites you to a true gem of early cinema – with buried treasure, exploding sailing ships, a romance with a beautiful girl, extraordinary stunts, and the capture of greedy treasure robbers! What more could you want? The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the centenary of The Black Pirate with the European premiere of both the restored film version (Museum of Modern Art, 2023) and the new film score by Robert Israel (2023), who wrote a melodic swashbuckler score à la Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner and John Williams especially for this film, which is in no way inferior to Fairbanks' artistic triumph on screen.

She was a fellow student of Debussy, admired by Saint-Saëns, and encouraged by the publisher Alphonse Leduc to create ever new works: Mélanie Bonis, a French composer who fell into obscurity after her death in 1937. Her impressionistic atmospheric picture Le Songe de Cléopâtre (The Dream of Cleopatra) from 1909 is beguilingly beautiful in its sophisticated orchestration and intoxicatingly sensual in its sound. A real discovery! The organ concerto by the contemporary Swiss composer Valentin Villard, written exactly one hundred years later, is also sonicly fascinating: it begins shimmering and undulating and ends with a rushing apotheosis. All of this is exactly the right thing for the dazzling star organist Anna Lapwood, who, to top it all off, also presents a French classic: the monumental organ symphony by Saint-Saëns. At her side: David Reiland from Belgium, head of the Orchestre National de Lorraine and the Sinfonietta Lausanne.

Dvořák is the favorite composer of many classical music fans and orchestras alike. His music plays well – and is pleasant to listen to. It is often lighthearted, comfortable, and full of life. The Czech national classic is represented twice in our concert – with two concert overtures, one of which poetically captures rural moods and views, the other sparklingly immerses itself in a turbulent carnival festivities. Brahms' profound A minor concerto, the so-called "Double Concerto," features two soloists – a work tailor-made for our brotherly soloist duo of Claudio and Oscar Bohórquez. The two also plays a role in Schubert's Symphony in B minor. It consists of two movements, not four like a conventional symphony, which is why it is nicknamed the Unfinished . Nevertheless, it is a complete masterpiece. It moves forward with double the force.

The New Year is entering in high spirits and in the best of spirits – a very special one for the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra: June 1, 2026, marks the 80th anniversary of their founding. Over the decades, they have opened up the entire cosmos of great music to their audiences. The New Year's Concert offers something for everyone: the folkloric, the exhilarating, the romantic, the virtuosic. In the overture to his successful operetta The Merry Widow, Franz Lehár ignites a sparkling firework display of immortal hits. He is the absolute superstar of the oboe, cor anglais, and oboe d'amore: Albrecht Mayer from Bamberg, principal oboe of the Berlin Philharmonic since 1992 and also a celebrated soloist and conductor, touring the world. He will be returning to us during Advent 2025. He will be bringing with him two beloved classics that are inextricably linked to Christmas: Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and music from Humperdinck's fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel . But it only becomes truly cozy and intimate when Albrecht Mayer plays his Bach arrangements—sometimes with choir participation: Christmas concerts couldn't be more beautiful, atmospheric, or festive!

Things are about to get loud and colorful! Clown Jeanloup arrives at the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra concert and not only annoys the conductor Stephan Hodel, alias Etienne, but also causes considerable disruption within the orchestra. Besides his "musical" performances on all sorts of imaginable objects, Jeanloup is particularly notable for his excessive hunger, which he tries to satisfy at every opportunity with food he has brought with him. Such behavior is obviously uncalled for – Etienne agrees – which is why he summarily throws him out of the concert hall. But a clown wouldn't be a clown if he didn't come back and, ultimately, even find pleasure in making music together.

This year, exquisite music from the late Baroque and early Classical periods will conjure up a cozy, festive Advent and Christmas atmosphere in the town hall hall—warm orchestral sounds from the German cosmopolitan Telemann, a Christmas symphony from France, a Christmas concert from Italy, flute concertos from the brilliant Bach son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and from the Venetian "Maestro assoluto" Vivaldi. The virtuoso flute tones come from the young Fabian Egger, a competition prize winner, scholarship holder at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and flautist at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. The conductor is Torsten Johann, harpsichordist and co-founder of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.

An absolute highlight of our anniversary season – this concert with music whose orchestral power and splendor of sound, along with its breathtakingly virtuosic violin performance, will give the audience a rollercoaster of emotions and make the Meistersingerhalle vibrate. The Violin Concerto by Benjamin Britten, the greatest British composer of the 20th century, is a great neo-Romantic work. Written in the summer of 1939, on the eve of World War II, it is permeated by dark forebodings and visions of horror, but also filled with those positive creative forces that transform great works of art into a metaphor for overcoming. Gustav Mahler, too, was a visionary and, in the all-encompassing stylistic diversity of his music at the time, a prophet of postmodernism. As in all his symphonies, in his "First" of 1888, he looks in two directions: back, full of nostalgic longing for the lost paradises of a good old time, and visionary ahead into a vague future—sometimes filled with fear by apocalyptic horrors, sometimes intoxicated by a boundlessly optimistic faith in the future.

Late Romantic, atmospheric, dramatic, beautiful: the Shakespeare tone poem Hamlet and Ophelia by Edward MacDowell, the first US composer to achieve international acclaim. He was still strongly influenced by European tradition: lots of Liszt, a bit of Brahms, a dash of Edvard Grieg - that was the mix. The first true musical Americana emerged with ragtime, jazz, and the popular music influenced by them. George Gershwin was a pioneer in the fusion of these genres with classical music. Master arranger Robert Russell Bennett has combined the hits from his opera Porgy and Bess into a colorful panorama in his Symphonic Picture . The southern part of the continent also sends its greetings with Rhythm of the Americas by US jazz and fusion musician Bob Mintzer. Afro-Caribbean, jazz, and much more combine to create a fiery mix in this concert for saxophone quartet and orchestra. At the helm: the Israeli-American conductor Nimrod David Pfeffer, closely associated with the New York Met and the Lyric Opera Company of Guatemala.

Added to this is Markus Becker, an exceptional pianist who is not only adept in classical music—here together with the Nuremberg Symphony's wind quintet—and in sometimes witty, cheeky, sometimes gripping French music—but also a true master as an improviser and jazz pianist. POETRY SLAM WITH MICHAEL JAKOB The best of the best-of

The Viennese have the waltz * On the Beautiful Blue Danube* , the Praguers have the tone poem *The Moldau* , and the New Yorkers have the musical *West Side Story* . But we Nurembergers have Richard Wagner's opera * The Mastersingers of Nuremberg * as the "music of our city" – the greatest tribute to the Franconian metropolis ever composed. The prelude to Act 1, relatively short in duration but monumental in its impact, is a veritable symphonic poem that encompasses all of the opera's central plot motifs. Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3, dedicated to Wagner in its original version, is monumental in every respect. Between these two monuments of late Romanticism is a famous masterpiece of early Classical music: Haydn's virtuoso C major concerto featuring the young Japanese rising star of the cello world, Michiaki Ueno. Benjamin Reiners, GMD in Chemnitz and conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, will be conducting. He has been a guest with us several times since 2012.

For Richard Wagner, it was the "apotheosis of dance," and some therefore refer to it as "The Choreographic." But Romain Rolland summed it up more succinctly when he called it an "orgy of rhythm" – Beethoven's 7th Symphony, pulsating with a rhythmic drive that ultimately builds to wild ecstasy in the inexorably forward-rushing finale. There's no stopping it – that's the rhythm you simply have to go with! But Maurice Ravel, the composer of Bolero , also celebrates an "orgy of rhythm" with La Valse , in 3/4 time. The piece, subtitled Poème chorégraphique (Choreographic Poem), is a "crazy" homage to the Viennese waltz. Between the two "choreographic" works: the premiere of Roland Kunz's Three Late Songs . The soloist is Turkish mezzo-soprano Seray Pinar, a member of the Académie of the Paris Opéra since 2022. In August 2024, she also sang in the final concert of the Young Singer Project at the Salzburg Festival.

Chic fashion, great cars, fine food, and excellent wine are what many people immediately associate with the Italian way of life. But Bella Italia naturally has much more to offer, especially when it comes to music: "Italia, Terra di Musica!" - Italy, the land of music! Opera and bel canto are among its trademarks – the "beautiful singing" with which the opera's heroes and heroines express their great emotions. Bel canto highlights – from voluptuous cantabile to igniting bravura arias – are presented by the young British bass-baritone William Thomas, who has already made a name for himself through performances in Milan and London, Vienna, and Paris. Richard Strauss made "Bella Italia" a declaration of love with his composed recollections of his trip to Italy in 1886. The piece is titled "From Italy ," and takes us through the Campagna to Naples.

It begins with Mozart's magnificent and fast-paced Haffner Symphony . Its first movement "must be quite fiery," wrote the composer, its finale "as swift as possible." For Robert Schumann, the "Mozart of the 19th century" was Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. His Piano Concerto No. 1 is a work full of youthful vigor, a firework of virtuoso pianistic eloquence. Finally, the crowning glory is an early symphonic masterpiece by the Czech national classic Antonín Dvorák – his "Fifth", both rurally idyllic and dramatically powerful in character.

And another annual highlight: For many years we have welcomed Bavaria's best jazz band in orchestra formation to the Serenadenhof. A formation in which jazz and swing flow from every pore, as if the young people had eaten it for breakfast. Even if the program remains a surprise in many areas, the fun of jazz and the joy of the crisp sound and swinging style is guaranteed. As always, orchestra leader Harald Rüschenbaum leads the program charmingly. A must for all fans of the smooth big band jazz sound.

Voilà: With Frank Bridges' suite of four sound pictures The Sea, we travel to the coast of the southern English county of Sussex - sometimes in sunlight, sometimes in moonlight or in a storm. The Second World War in Europe ended with the capitulation of the German Wehrmacht on the night of May 8-9, 1945. The "liberation from National Socialism" has shaped German culture of remembrance ever since. This concert commemorates this date, which was so significant for German history, exactly 80 years ago. At the invitation of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the New York-based The Orchestra Now , which consists of talented young performers from all over the world, will play under the direction of Leon Botstein, founder of TON and first guest conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. At the podium: audience favorite Gordon Hamilton, the Australian who has chosen to live in Berlin, who, as always when he comes to us, is also bringing a brand new work of his own to the premiere: A Golden Thread , a golden thread that gradually weaves through the string orchestra. The foyer is only there for the break - but why? This time we are daring to do something special: we are transforming the foyer with its cool atmosphere and also the music hall of our orchestra's own venue into a veritable exhibition hall to bring music and art lovers together. Nine large-format originals by the Nuremberg artist Manfred Hürlimann will be exhibited in the foyer of the music hall and the pictures will be in direct contact with the music. For the visitors, the dance-like sounds of the piano trio from the Romantic and Modern periods meet the power of Hürlimann's pictures of the classical muses of antiquity. They are finally coming together to make music together: our chief conductor Jonathan Darlington and his older brother, the celebrated concert organist and highly respected church musician from Oxford, Stephen Darlington. He has brought a work to Nuremberg that allows him to pull out all the stops of the Meistersingerhalle organ and his own art of organ playing. It is the breathtaking, overwhelming, but rarely heard in this country, organ symphony by the US national classic Aaron Copland, composed in the "Roaring Twenties". The organ symphony is contrasted with a "secret" symphony. Tchaikovsky's 3rd Suite is in fact a veritable symphony in terms of dimension and design, including waltzes and a sequence of variations. In between: the enigmatic orchestral piece "The Unanswered Question" by the pioneer of real American art music, Charles Ives. His question: where does music come from, where does music go? Master arranger Robert Russel Bennett titled his symphonically brilliant medley of immortal melodies by "the great George" Gershwin in Hollywood . After 2019, Vivi Vassileva, a German star percussionist with Bulgarian roots who electrifies audiences around the world, will be joining us as the soloist in his brand new percussion concert. Not only was Hilary Clinton born in the capital of the US state of Arkansas, but also a great woman in American music history sixty years earlier: Florence Price, the first African-American composer to make her voice heard. Her masterful fourth and final symphony from 1945 was not played for the first time until 2018. It is conducted by Gregor Mayrhofer, who has previously assisted Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic and worked with soloists such as Khatia Buniatishvili and Daniil Trifonov.

Copland's Outdoor Overture takes you to a rural setting, while Gershwin's Concerto in F captures the bustling city life in a competition between piano and orchestra. Competition? Love! Of course, our hit parade of American Classics includes Bernstein's global musical success, which projects Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet love tragedy onto New York's West Side. Our guests are two young "China stars" who have already enjoyed great success around the world and are now at home in the USA: the pianist Ying Li and the conductor Yue Bao, both graduates of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein studied.

Farbe! 2015 gewann er den Münchner ARD-Musikwettbewerb, und seine Karriere als Solist, Kammer- und Orchestermusiker nahm ihren steilen Verlauf: Sébastian Jacot, 1987 in Genf geboren, war nach einer Zwischenstation im Leipziger Gewandhausorchester seit 2022 einer der beiden Solo-Flötisten der Berliner Philharmoniker. Bei uns brilliert er mit gleich zwei Konzerten - mit La Notte von Vivaldi, der darin nächtliche Geister weckt, sowie mit dem spielfreudigen Konzert des deutschen Spätromantikers Carl Reinecke. Am Pult: die 1988 in Saarbrücken geborene Dirigentin Ruth Reinhardt, die vor allem in den USA, aber auch in Europa schon große Karriere machte. Ganz nebenbei ist sie seit 2020 auch Saarlandbotschafterin. Brahms und Hindemith zählen zu ihren Favoriten. Und die dirigiert sie auch bei uns. Deshalb erklingt zum Abschluss Hindemiths großartige Mathis-Symphonie, inspiriert von den opulenten Tafelbildern des Isenheimer Altars. Schwarz-Weiß? Farbe!

Film classics brought back to life! Every season, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra celebrates the 100th anniversary of a legendary silent film. In 2025, they will continue the multimedia series for eyes and ears with the live-to-projection performance of a veritable cinematographic icon of the horror genre: The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian, first shown in New York in 1925 and today recognized by the Library of Congress as "particularly valuable in terms of cultural history". At the time, the film was already the second film adaptation of the French novel Le Fantome de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The gruesome Phantom has now wreaked havoc on the screen a dozen times. But only Rupert Julian's adaptation became a cinematic classic - not least thanks to Lon Chaney in the title role, the US actor and make-up artist also known as "The Man with a Thousand Faces". In 1996, Carl Davis, who sadly passed away in 2023, composed a new soundtrack, opulently orchestrated with a large apparatus, including an organ. Adrian Prabava, who had already directed the successful productions of Sunrise and Robin Hood for us, returns to the symphony orchestra's podium .

The Conducting Forum is the German Music Council's support program for top young conductors in Germany. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is a regular partner of this program. The final concerts are both the finale of the four-year funding program for scholarship holders in the orchestral conducting category and a possible preliminary stage for the German Conducting Award 2024. Two of the candidates will be sent directly by the jury to the competition, which will be held in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall in autumn in cooperation with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Cologne Opera. Udo Wachtveitl, actor, speaker, director, screenwriter is a true great on the screen and his filmography is endless. Luck? Success! September 4, 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner's birthday. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is celebrating the great Austrian late romantic with a performance of his monumental 8th Symphony, the last one he was able to complete. At the same time, the work is the most extensive and most heavily cast of all Bruckner's symphonies - a tremendous solitaire. The concert will be opened with "something quite curious", as Schumann called his concert piece for four horns and orchestra. The highly virtuosic work is, in a sense, the musical calling card of the horn quartet german hornsound , consisting of four excellent musicians who, in addition to their joint solo performances, play in renowned orchestras. Everything they set out to do on their instruments - even the most delicate and difficult - they succeed at. Luck? Someone might ask cheekily with a wink. This is where you tick: The Andante of Haydn's Symphony No. 101 is permeated by a regularly swinging accompanying figure - a notorious "tick-tock" that became a trademark of the work and gave the symphony its nickname once and for all: The Clock . We begin the afternoon with dance rhythms: Le Tombeau de Couperin , Ravel's homage to the baroque French clavecinists, is a suite of old French dances in its orchestral version, nobly styled by the composer and brought to a perfect compositional finish. Music at its finest! Then we are joined by Igor Stravinsky, the greatest rhythmist of the 20th century. He can be experienced with us with his neoclassical, fresh Violin Concerto in D from 1931. The soloist is the young star violinist Alexandra Conunova, who thrilled tens of thousands of people at the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra's Classic Open Air in August 2023 in the Luitpoldhain.

Gleich mit einem Highlight starten wir in die neue Konzertsaison: Erstmals bei uns zu Gast ist der franko-kanadische Star-Pianist Marc-André Hamelin - eine absolute Ausnahme-Erscheinung am Klavier-Himmel, die phänomenal höchste technische Virtuosität mit größter musikalischer Ausdruckskraft zu verbinden weiß. An der Seite unseres Chefdirigenten Jonathan Darlington spielt Marc-André Hamelin das so spritzige und musikalisch überschäumende wie nostalgisch verträumte G-Dur-Konzert des Bolero-Komponisten Maurice Ravel. Los geht der Abend mit den bunten Zwischenspielen aus der Strauss-Oper Intermezzo, die ironisch-augenzwinkernd Einblicke in das Private des Komponisten gibt - "Szenen einer Ehe" à la Richard Strauss. Intermezzo? Symphonie! Den krönenden Abschluss macht die "Fünfte" des großen britischen Nationalkomponisten Ralph Vaughan Williams - lyrisch abgeklärte und feierlich hymnische Musik, erfüllt von einer ruhig-gelassenen Noblesse.

A musical journey full of memories: The overture from The Magic Flute opens festively and energetically, followed by the passionate first movement of Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor – with Chiaya Kakutani at the piano. The famous Adagio from Mozart's C major Concerto touches with its timeless beauty and inner peace. The Nutcracker Suite evokes childhood and Christmas, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel bridges the gap to the world of fairy tales, before the rousing potpourri from the musical Im weißen Rössl (The White Horse Inn) sets a cheerful mood. Susanne Hoch, with Leonhard Kreutzmann conducting the program with heart and sensitivity.

Far from the genre's melancholic roots, their Vintage Sounds of Finland pays tribute to the country's dance music from the 1930s to the 1960s, with occasional nods to the 70s and 80s. And as die-hard Eurovision fans, they can't resist weaving in humorous references to the legendary competition! Come join Uusikuu's musical picnic, where happiness is served in bite-sized melodies, and everyone is invited to sing along!

Perhaps one day you'll proudly tell your children: "Back then, in the spring of 2026, I heard him with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra! He was still very young, just at the beginning of his career!" Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, born in 1999, is a Canadian pianist with European roots—to some, he's the new Lang Lang. In recent years, he's collected first prizes in piano competitions like other people collect postage stamps, most recently at the prestigious Leeds International Competition. He's celebrated everywhere—for his outstanding technique, for his charisma, for the depth of his interpretations. Simply incredible! Here, he'll play Liszt's strikingly virtuosic First Piano Concerto, flanked by Tchaikovsky's Pathétique and the Silk Road Fantasy by contemporary Chinese composer Jiping Zhao, famous for his many film scores. Guoyong Zhang, Music Director of the Shanghai Opera and Chief Conductor of the Qingdao Symphony Orchestra, conducts.
