A Symphony of Events: Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra’s 2025 Concert Series

Defeat? Triumph! In 2006 he was our guest for the first time and delivered a non plus ultra interpretation of Tchaikovsky's 3rd Symphony. Unforgettable! In 2008 he came back and conducted Respighi's Fontane di Roma in a congenial manner . Impressive! Now he is coming again: Alan Buribayev, the master of the baton from Kazakhstan, former GMD in Meiningen, former head of the Het Brabants Orkest and now head of the Astana Opera in his homeland. This time he will conduct the overture to the Aeschylus opera L'Oresteia by Tchaikovsky's contemporary Sergei Taneyev and a Mozart concerto alongside the young Dutch violinist Hawijch Elders, who won 1st prize and three special prizes at the Henri Marteau International Violin Competition in 2023. Finally, Tchaikovsky's "Fifth" will be performed. The foyer is only there for the break - but why? This time we are daring to do something special: we are transforming the foyer with its cool atmosphere and also the music hall of our orchestra's own venue into a veritable exhibition hall to bring music and art lovers together. Nine large-format originals by the Nuremberg artist Manfred Hürlimann will be exhibited in the foyer of the music hall and the pictures will be in direct contact with the music. For the visitors, the dance-like sounds of the piano trio from the Romantic and Modern periods meet the power of Hürlimann's pictures of the classical muses of antiquity. They are finally coming together to make music together: our chief conductor Jonathan Darlington and his older brother, the celebrated concert organist and highly respected church musician from Oxford, Stephen Darlington. He has brought a work to Nuremberg that allows him to pull out all the stops of the Meistersingerhalle organ and his own art of organ playing. It is the breathtaking, overwhelming, but rarely heard in this country, organ symphony by the US national classic Aaron Copland, composed in the "Roaring Twenties". The organ symphony is contrasted with a "secret" symphony. Tchaikovsky's 3rd Suite is in fact a veritable symphony in terms of dimension and design, including waltzes and a sequence of variations. In between: the enigmatic orchestral piece "The Unanswered Question" by the pioneer of real American art music, Charles Ives. His question: where does music come from, where does music go? Her masterful fourth and final symphony from 1945 was not played for the first time until 2018. Farbe! 2015 gewann er den Münchner ARD-Musikwettbewerb, und seine Karriere als Solist, Kammer- und Orchestermusiker nahm ihren steilen Verlauf: Sébastian Jacot, 1987 in Genf geboren, war nach einer Zwischenstation im Leipziger Gewandhausorchester seit 2022 einer der beiden Solo-Flötisten der Berliner Philharmoniker. Bei uns brilliert er mit gleich zwei Konzerten - mit La Notte von Vivaldi, der darin nächtliche Geister weckt, sowie mit dem spielfreudigen Konzert des deutschen Spätromantikers Carl Reinecke. Am Pult: die 1988 in Saarbrücken geborene Dirigentin Ruth Reinhardt, die vor allem in den USA, aber auch in Europa schon große Karriere machte. Ganz nebenbei ist sie seit 2020 auch Saarlandbotschafterin. Brahms und Hindemith zählen zu ihren Favoriten. Und die dirigiert sie auch bei uns. Deshalb erklingt zum Abschluss Hindemiths großartige Mathis-Symphonie, inspiriert von den opulenten Tafelbildern des Isenheimer Altars. Schwarz-Weiß? Farbe!

Film classics brought back to life! Every season, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra celebrates the 100th anniversary of a legendary silent film. In 2025, they will continue the multimedia series for eyes and ears with the live-to-projection performance of a veritable cinematographic icon of the horror genre: The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian, first shown in New York in 1925 and today recognized by the Library of Congress as "particularly valuable in terms of cultural history". At the time, the film was already the second film adaptation of the French novel Le Fantome de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The gruesome Phantom has now wreaked havoc on the screen a dozen times. But only Rupert Julian's adaptation became a cinematic classic - not least thanks to Lon Chaney in the title role, the US actor and make-up artist also known as "The Man with a Thousand Faces". In 1996, Carl Davis, who sadly passed away in 2023, composed a new soundtrack, opulently orchestrated with a large apparatus, including an organ. Adrian Prabava, who had already directed the successful productions of Sunrise and Robin Hood for us, returns to the symphony orchestra's podium .

The Conducting Forum is the German Music Council's support program for top young conductors in Germany. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is a regular partner of this program. The final concerts are both the finale of the four-year funding program for scholarship holders in the orchestral conducting category and a possible preliminary stage for the German Conducting Award 2024. Two of the candidates will be sent directly by the jury to the competition, which will be held in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall in autumn in cooperation with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Cologne Opera. With our Advent concerts, we invite you to the historic town hall, located directly on the main market, in the heart of Nuremberg's picturesque old town. Unbelievable, but true: When Haydn was conducting in London in 1795, the huge chandelier fell into the hall - but nobody was hurt because the audience had streamed to the front to see Haydn up close. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is celebrating the great Austrian late romantic with a performance of his monumental 8th Symphony, the last one he was able to complete. The Second World War in Europe ended with the capitulation of the German Wehrmacht on the night of May 8-9, 1945. The "liberation from National Socialism" has shaped German culture of remembrance ever since. This concert commemorates this date, which was so significant for German history, exactly 80 years ago. At the invitation of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the New York-based The Orchestra Now , which consists of talented young performers from all over the world, will play under the direction of Leon Botstein, founder of TON and first guest conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Supported by the Chamber Choir of the Nuremberg University of Music and our first concertmaster, Anna Reszniak, music by Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whose music was banned during the Nazi era because of his Jewish origins, will be played in the Congress Hall. Sending a strong signal for peace and tolerance is the common goal of all those involved.

More? Sea! For the brilliant end of the season of our symphonic concerts, we're heading to the water. Debussy's impressionistic mega-masterpiece La Mer takes us to a luminous Mediterranean scenery. This is what summer by the sea sounds like! You want more! Voilà: With Frank Bridges' suite of four sound pictures The Sea, we travel to the coast of the southern English county of Sussex - sometimes in sunlight, sometimes in moonlight or in a storm. The piece has probably never been heard in Nuremberg. A real discovery! "When I heard the piece for the first time, I was thrown off track," admitted Bridges' composition student Benjamin Britten. He gets his due here with his vocal-instrumental serenade. Six poems from five centuries of English poetry form the basis. They conjure up evening and nighttime moods with effective horn playing and haunting tenor singing. The Symphoniker's solo horn player Matthias Nothhelfer and the Glasgow-born tenor Thomas Walker will provide solo brilliance.

This year, fans of classical concerts can look forward to a very special French-Spanish touch. The focus of the evening is the guitar and with it the grandiose super hit by the Spaniard Joaquín Rodriguez, his Concierto de Aranjuez . The concert was composed in Paris and embodies the Spanish sound with jazz overtones like no other. It is flanked by two very different works of French literature: Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin , a homage to French music of the 18th century, and Bizet's symphonic debut, which is bursting with summery lightness, inventiveness and exuberance. And another annual highlight: For many years we have welcomed Bavaria's best jazz band in orchestra formation to the Serenadenhof. A formation in which jazz and swing flow from every pore, as if the young people had eaten it for breakfast. Even if the program remains a surprise in many areas, the fun of jazz and the joy of the crisp sound and swinging style is guaranteed. As always, orchestra leader Harald Rüschenbaum leads the program charmingly. A must for all fans of the smooth big band jazz sound.

It must have been a wild time in Berlin in the Golden Twenties. This particularly stirring compilation of swinging melodies, lyrical texts, grotesque stories and dreamy events comes from the heyday of a metropolis when Berlin was the third largest community in the world. Charming in tone and style presented by "Chanteuse internationale" Adrienne Haan. "If I could wish for something...", says a song by Friedrich Hollaender, "then Berlin could have stayed like this," one or two might answer. An evening with lasting resonance!
