The warmth of Brahms’ third symphony has made it a favourite of many concertgoers. His friend Clara Schumann wrote: “Each movement is a jewel! I could not tell you which I loved most.”  A century earlier, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach composed his emotional and imaginative flute concerto – complete with stormy, calm, angry, and joyous moods, with its dazzling melodies requiring breath-defying skills. Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski’s overture is an exciting exploration of musical buoyancy, rising and falling both in volume and intensity.

You will want to be present as we highlight one of our own—principal horn, Richard Britsch—who will take the limelight for Glière’s Horn Concerto with YOUR Grand Rapids Symphony. Considered the most important work for horn of the 20th Century, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful melodies and colorful orchestration. The program opens with Grażyna Bacewicz's Overture—an energizing work that was written in 1943, during World War II. Its bold melodies, driving rhythms, and expressive orchestration evoke hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The evening will close with Prokofiev’s last symphony—written when the composer was 61 years old.

Smetana, Prokofiev, two thrilling debuts and a Minnesota Orchestra first all at once! Conductor Ruth Reinhardt and saxophonist Steven Banks, a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, make their debuts with the Minnesota Orchestra to showcase Billy Childs’ recently premiered Diaspora, a concerto for saxophone and orchestra. The work co-commissioned by the Orchestra highlights Black experiences in America, with inspiration from poets including Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Then: romance, drama and intrigue capture the evening with a suite from Prokofiev’s gripping ballet score.

New Jersey Symphony: Ruth Reinhardt Conducts Bartók & Mendelssohn

Ruth Reinhardt’s Nashville debut features two piano concertos composed centuries apart. At one end of the spectrum is Bach’s 1730s Keyboard Concerto in A Major, at the other is Rounds by Jesse Montgomery. Written in 2022 in close collaboration with Awadagin Pratt, The Boston Globe praised Rounds for its “narrative flair and structural clarity.” Bookending the concert are Bacewicz’s contemplative Partita for Orchestra and one of the most beloved works in the repertoire, Brahms’ First Symphony.

Ruth Reinhardt, in her Philharmonic debut, leads the Orchestra in Dvořák’s Symphony No. 5. Kirill Gerstein joins for Thomas Adès’s piano concerto In Seven Days, a musical depiction of the Biblical creation myth, accompanied by film by Tal Rosner. The lively opener, by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, stands in the tradition of rousing concert overtures.

When Mason Bates composed his Piano Concerto, he repeated a simple mantra to himself: <em>Let the soloist shine</em>. Bates could not have chosen a better partner for this SF Symphony Co-Commission and West Coast Premiere than the astoundingly dexterous pianist Daniil Trifonov. Led by Ruth Reinhardt in her SF Symphony debut, the program also includes Lotta Wennäkoski’s <em>Helsinki Variations</em> and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 5, a work beloved for its natural warmth, singing melodies, and beautiful pastoral scenes

The first American to win the prestigious Leeds Competition in 46 years, Eric Lu is a pianist to watch. His rendering of Mozart’s stormy D-minor concerto will balance the high spirits of Mendelssohn’s symphony inspired by the Italian countryside, led by former Dudamel Fellow Ruth Reinhardt, who has been praised for her “incandescent talent, strong musical ideas, and originality.” (The Seattle Times)

The incredible Jean-Yves Thibaudet plays one of his specialties, Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto. Former Dudamel Conducting Fellow Ruth Reinhardt serves up energetic Dvořák in her Bowl debut with a selection of Bohemian-inspired Slavonic Dances and the entrancing Seventh Symphony.
