From Broadway to Hollywood

The show Cashbox calls, “The most exciting Beatles presentation in decades” performs their special presentation of the Beatles 27 number one hit songs that changed the world, for the first time in Edmonton at the Winspear Centre.

Ones – The Beatles #1 Hits

Immerse yourself in an evening of enchanting melodies with "Fantastic Dances: Rachmaninoff & Ravel" at the Winspear Centre. Under the baton of the esteemed conductor Michael Stern, this captivating performance is scheduled for May 18th and 19th, with shows at 7:30 PM and a matinee at 2:00 PM, respectively.

This concert promises a journey through the evocative landscapes of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Maurice Ravel's compositions. Rachmaninoff, who longed to create a ballet, offers instead his vibrant Symphonic Dances, a late masterpiece filled with color and rhythm. Ravel's La valse, originally intended as a ballet deemed undanceable, presents a whirlwind of waltzing couples in an ever-brightening ballroom, culminating in a dazzling burst of light. The program also introduces Avner Dorman's Piano Concerto No. 3, a recent work from 2022, described as a rollercoaster of emotions, from despair to ecstasy, featuring Mackenzie Melemed making his ESO debut on piano.

Before the concert on Saturday, May 18th, attendees are invited to a Prelude presentation at 6:45 PM in the Upper Circle Lobby (3rd Floor). Led by musicologist D.T. Baker, this talk offers fascinating insights into the evening's repertoire, enhancing the concert experience.

Live at the Winspear is excited to present performer and pedagogue Nathan Laube for his thrilling debut performance on the Davis Concert Organ. Known for his brilliant playing, gracious demeanour, and creative programming of repertoire spanning five centuries, he has earned high praise from critics and peers alike. The program will include Laube's own transcription of Franz Liszt's Sonata in B Minor, one of his most magnificent works for the keyboard.

Sarah T. Murdoch is a curious eight-year-old girl who isn’t looking forward to her school’s field trip to the symphony. She is sure that M stands for Meh, not music. There are ZERO Jellyfish at the Winspear Centre and not a single dinosaur. But could music be its own adventure? In this delightful introduction to the symphony, Sarah explores the big questions: What is music for? Where does it come from? And is fancy-schmancy orchestra music really for everyone?  Let your imagination be captivated by the ESO while following along on Sarah’s adorable musical journey!

M Is for Music

Barber’s whimsical Violin Concerto spotlights ESO Concertmaster Robert Uchida with poetic music that will sweep you off your feet. It’s a mystery why Schubert left his eighth symphony unfinished, although one historian claimed, “He could never have finished it because nothing could approach the originality, power, and skill of the first two movements.” On the other hand, Beethoven wrote four different overtures for his one opera, of which the third is the most impressive, and most popular.

Edmonton’s Celeigh Cardinal makes her ESO debut. This JUNO award-winning, Metis soul-folk singer/songwriter brings humour, passion, and endless energy to the stage. You’ll hear her own hits like Set Yourself Free, Wandering River, and When All Is Said and Done, as well as her favourite pop classics, including At Last, Sweet Dreams Are Made of These, and There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.

Celeigh Cardinal With The Eso

Experience the captivating blend of music and dance at "The Wolf of Lafontaine: Song & Dance," a mesmerizing event curated by Alex Prior, taking place at the Winspear Centre on Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 PM. This unique performance shines a spotlight on some of today's most brilliant composers, featuring the premiere of Ian Cusson's "Le loup de Lafontaine - Suite for Orchestra in Three Scenes." This evocative piece brings the legend of The Wolf of Lafontaine to life, accompanied by the talents of Ballet Edmonton and the Chronos Vocal Ensemble.

Ian Cusson, a composer of Métis and French-Canadian descent, explores themes of Canadian Indigenous experience, mixed-racial identity, and the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures. His work, inspired by the cautionary tale set in the small Ontario community of Lafontaine in 1902, delves into the dynamics between settler and Indigenous communities during a time of mistrust, united only by the common goal of confronting a menacing wolf.

The evening's program also includes premieres by Jocelyn Morlock and Emilie Cecilia Lebel, alongside various songs for a capella choir, promising an unforgettable journey through contemporary music. Choreography for "Le loup de Lafontaine" is provided by Wen Wei Wang, with costume design by Linda Chow and lighting design by Dorrie Deutschendorf, ensuring a visually stunning presentation.

The Magical Music of Harry Potter

World-music quartet DakhaBrakha returns to the Winspear Centre this spring. Live At The Winspear is proud to present this theatrical Ukrainian band that hails from Kyiv, Ukraine. Since their creation in 2004, the band has experimented with Ukrainian folk music and added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, creating bright, unique, and unforgettable performances. Accompanied by traditional instruments from different countries, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.

Charlotte is no ordinary little girl; she plays the trumpet on a cardboard tube, the xylophone with two knitting needles, and the drums on anything that bangs. Her musical talents are not appreciated at home, so she sets off into the wide world only to find herself lost in a raging blizzard. The Music-Maker to the rescue! An odd little man who shares Charlotte's passion for music, the Music-Maker takes Charlotte on a magical, musical journey. Your ESO will perform a stunning original score by Canadian composer Alain Trudel, plus selections from Handel, Grieg, and up-beat arrangements of well-known popular tunes. Families will enjoy this adventure with Platypus Theatre exploring the sounds and colours of the instruments and the exciting possibilities that music offers. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

Charlotte & The Music-maker

Véronique Lacroix, the dynamic founding director of the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, conducts colourful and compelling music by some of Canada’s finest contemporary composers. Sokolović’s music affectionately conjures childhood memories of a merry-go-round. Gilbert’s concerto is both dazzling and haunting, with translucent percussion sonorities filling the air. Ricketts' spacious and dramatic concerto gradually reveals a spellbinding narrative. Two bold works for solo instruments explore the sonic beauties and expressive possibilities of the harp and the tam-tam.

Castles & Warriors: Transcendent Sounds

The University of Alberta Department of Music welcomes the internationally acclaimed Zukerman Trio for the 2024 Kilburn Memorial Concert. Consisting of violinist Pinchas Zukerman, cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Shai Wosner, the Zukerman Trio brings their peerless musicianship to the Winspear stage March 10 at 3p.m. Find out more about the Zukerman Trio here.

Flute Masterclass

The warmth of Brahms’ third symphony has made it a favourite of many concertgoers. His friend Clara Schumann wrote: “Each movement is a jewel! I could not tell you which I loved most.”  A century earlier, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach composed his emotional and imaginative flute concerto – complete with stormy, calm, angry, and joyous moods, with its dazzling melodies requiring breath-defying skills. Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski’s overture is an exciting exploration of musical buoyancy, rising and falling both in volume and intensity.

Rusty Musicians: B-sides

Live at the Winspear is thrilled to present Canadian organist Mark McDonald on the Davis Concert Organ. McDonald’s diverse career has included performances with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Victoria Symphony, and Cirque du Soleil. He will make his Winspear Centre debut performing Holst’s The Planets. Written between 1914-16, this piece represents all the known planets of the Solar System seen from earth at the time, and their corresponding astrological character. From the angry and ominous first movement representing Mars to the other-worldly beauty of the mysterious Neptune finale, McDonald will take his audience on an emotional musical journey.

Dance Studios from across Alberta are presenting a variety of performances. Jazz, tap, musical theatre, ballet, contemporary, acro. All funds raised will provide scholarships to performers to further their dance education. Whether it be post-secondary or during senior years of high school.
