Five soloists from the OPRL and Belgian pianist Julien Beurms share their passion for the repertoire of quartets, quintets, and sextets for piano and wind instruments. In addition to Mozart's Quintet , which almost serves as a "chamber concerto," and Poulenc's Sextet , with its charming gaiety and expressiveness, discover the sparkling Sextet by Louise Farrenc, one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century , the Quartet for piano and winds by Jean-Michel Damase, with its very French sap, but also Samuel Barber's Summer Music , which highlights each instrument of the wind quintet.

A Paris-trained virtuoso, Tondre is a professor at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and serves as the principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with previous positions in Stuttgart, Leipzig, and Japan. This special program juxtaposes the timeless works of Mozart and Beethoven with pieces by one of England's most revered masters, Gordon Jacob, who taught composition at the Royal College of Music in London from 1924 to 1966.

The shine of the winds

Dive into the heart of romanticism with the enchanting "Quintette à vent" performance at the prestigious Salle Philharmonique in Liège. This exceptional event, scheduled for Wednesday, September 25th, 2024, at 12:30 PM, promises a journey through the 19th and 20th centuries with a free concert that showcases the evolution and technical refinement of wind instruments. Featuring five leading soloists from the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL), attendees will be treated to a repertoire of French, Italian, and German pieces, highlighting the light, melodic, and virtuosic nature of wind quintet compositions.

The program includes works by Taffanel, Ibert, Rossini, and Danzi, performed by Lieve Goossens (flute), Sébastien Guedj (oboe), Jean-Luc Votano (clarinet), Joanie Carlier (bassoon), and Margaux Ortman (horn). This event, part of the "Musique à midi" series, is not available for subscription but is supported by the Friends of the Orchestra and in collaboration with the asbl HOP.

Wind quintet

Born in Hamburg in 1824 (200 years ago!), Reinecke had a precocious start as a piano prodigy. He associated with the greatest composers of his time, including Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and Brahms. He enjoyed a brilliant career in Leipzig as a conductor, piano teacher, and composer. Reinecke also attracted promising students like Grieg, Janáček, Albéniz, and Bruch. The musicians of the OPRL (Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège) are paying tribute to this master of German Romanticism, particularly recognizing his significant contributions to wind instruments.

An original combination of instruments for this "Musique à midi" (Music at Noon) concert featuring the Eoliha Duo (composed of Margaux Ortman, principal horn of the OPRL, and harpist Gabriella Garcia) and Xu Han, associate concertmaster of the OPRL's first violins. In this special alchemy that blends the majestic sounds of the horn with the vivacity of plucked and bowed strings, these musicians offer French romantic works, a recent composition by Robert Ortman (Margaux's father), and surprises that will delight you.

Thanks to Mozart, the horn acquired its first letters of nobility at a time when it was considered only as an instrument for hunting and the outdoors. Both noble and joyful, enriched by a slow movement imbued with great tenderness, the Second Concerto (1783) highlights the new head of the OPRL horn section, Margaux Ortman. A mature work, Mozart's Symphony No. 39 (1788) is inspired by the theater, and is similar to Don Giovanni in its incessant quest for colors, the presence of deep and meditative passages, and this ability to shape melodies like true lines of song.
