The famous 40th Symphony by Mozart (1788) is widely recognized and has been used in advertising, film, and as a cellphone ringtone. It remains a masterpiece by the composer, featuring breathless rhythms and dark melodic lines that respond to the turbulent pre-Romanticism of the Enlightenment era. Jonathan Cohen, a specialist in early music, presents the first of Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos, composed in 1721 for the Margrave of Brandenburg. This work is influenced by French dance suites. Violinist Viktoria Mullova, making her debut at the OPRL, is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach in contemporary times, as described by The Guardian: "Hearing Mullova play Bach is simply one of the greatest things you can experience."
