Humanity is at the core of this transformative program. “I conceived of it as a symphony on the greatness of the human soul,” Prokofiev remarked about his wartime Fifth Symphony. In 2020, as Reena Esmail set out to compose RE|Member, she felt the deep healing of a collective return to music-making after a global pandemic. And Billy Childs expresses trauma, resilience, and empowerment within the Black American experience through his poignant symphonic poem, Diaspora, brought to life in these performances by saxophonist Steven Banks.

Join us as we bring back Sergei Prokofiev’s classic symphonic tale Peter and the Wolf! The story follows a young boy named Peter who, with the help of his friends – a bird, a duck and a cat – catches a wolf, saves him from hunters and takes him to the zoo. Beautifully narrated by local Twin Cities artist Lady Midnight, this story will teach students about the instrument families as each animal is portrayed by a different instrument playing each animal’s unique theme.

In her CSO debut, Ukranian conductor Oksana Lyniv leads a program that weaves together powerful stories. Evgeni Orkin’s Five Interrupted Lullabies opens with a series of haunting lullabies, each symbolically interrupted to mark innocence lost to war. Smetana’s “The Moldau” spins and swirls as it journeys along the winding Vltava River, while Dvořák’s Golden Spinning Wheel weaves a tale of fate and destiny, where enchanting melodies intertwine with dark, mysterious forces. A celebrated musician based in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, Schuyler Jackson is the Second Bassoonist in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 2014. In the 2022-2023 season, Schuyler also held a one year position in the Minnesota Orchestra, performing as a full-time member of the bassoon section. A multifaceted musician, Schuyler has performed as substitute Principal Bassoon in the Minnesota Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and Bach in Baltimore. Schuyler has appeared with numerous other orchestras throughout the United States, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Anyone who wins the junior section of the legendary International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 13 is under special scrutiny. Even ten years later, Alexander Malofeev continues to fulfill the associated expectations with flying colors. Since then, the Russian, dubbed a "world revolution on the piano" by the Wiener Standard, has collected numerous other prizes and performed with the world's greatest orchestras. In 2022, he stood in for Yevgeny Kissin with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. "The audience went wild with enthusiasm," wrote the Frankfurter Rundschau. At the Elbphilharmonie, the still only 23-year-old now devotes himself to both the grand masters of Russian piano music and darkly shimmering works from Northern Europe.

At the first Pro Musica concert of the year, the musicians of the Odense Symphony Orchestra take the audience on a journey through three centuries of chamber music history; from the inventor of the string quartet to the most beloved clarinet quintet of the high romantic period to a quintet from one of the greatest pioneers of the 20th century. In Haydn's stormy and ambitious late quartet, for example, we can look forward to the "witch's minuet" in two-part canon. Prokofiev's circus-inspired quintet from 1924 for the sonically motley combination of oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass is the most whimsical piece of music you will hear in a long time. It was written for a traveling ballet troupe under the title Trapeze, but achieved immortality as a six-movement, picturesque quintet.

From a prowling mountain lion to a powerful symphony, this program is full of heart and heroism. Adam Schoenberg’s Cool Cat is a cinematic tribute to P-22, the beloved Hollywood mountain lion who became a symbol of resilience. Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, featuring the expressive artistry of violinist Rachel Lee Priday, blends lyrical beauty with the spirit of Scottish folk music. The evening culminates in Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, a work the composer described as “a symphony on the greatness of the human soul,” composed in the final years of World War II. Grand, stirring, and filled with emotional depth, this concert is a true triumph.

The organ world of this concert offers a wealth of evocative colors and magical impressions – and even a few mythical figures play their games. Johannes Skoog, born in Stockholm in 1992, will bring them musically to life on the keys and pedals: He won First Prize at the Canadian International Organ Competition in 2024 and was recently appointed organist to the Swedish royal court. He opens his Bamberg program with Prokofiev's Toccata of 1912, a "devilishly witty" virtuoso piece of classical modernism. Debussy's sensuously shimmering composition, written in 1894, is characterized by an arabesque-like main theme: A faun revels in intoxicating memories of beautiful nymphs on a summer afternoon.

Sarasota Orchestra lights up listeners of all ages in this 60-minute concert of familiar favorites. The program's centerpiece is Peter and the Wolf, Sergey Prokofiev's "symphonic fairy tale for children." The Royal Danish Orchestra’s chamber concerts present celebrated masterpieces alongside rare gems of the chamber music repertoire. During the annual Elisabeth Week, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra celebrates a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. This year’s guest is Sergei Redkin, second prize winner in 2021. Redkin takes us through the music of Prokofiev, a highlight of his repertoire. He performs the Third Piano Concerto – a dynamic dialogue between pianist and orchestra, culminating in a fiery finale. Under the baton of Valentin Uryupin, an expert in Russian repertoire, the orchestra also brings to life Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, a symphonic poem full of vibrant orchestration and the sensuous world of One Thousand and One Nights.

Pianist Gabriela Montero returns to Spivey Hall with Westward, a program featuring extraordinary immigrant composers and anchored by her improvised accompaniment to Charlie Chaplin’s 1917 film, The Immigrant. Known as a master improviser, Montero’s visionary interpretations and unique compositions have received critical acclaim and brought her a devoted following. A multiple-Grammy® and International Beethoven Award winner, Montero has been recognized by Amnesty International and the Human Rights Foundation as a committed human rights advocate for her work in her native Venezuela.

Warm up your January with the Calgary Phil and conductor Fawzi Haimor in this wide-ranging program featuring Ginastera's spirited Argentine dances and Gershwin's musical portrait of a wistful American wandering the streets of Paris. The Calgary Youth Orchestra joins the Phil in a side-by-side performance of Valerie Coleman's bold musical call for unity in a divided world, and Canadian cellist Luka Coetzee is the blazing protagonist in the sweeping drama of Prokofiev's Sinfonia concertante. This performance is presented in partnership with One Yellow Rabbit as part of the High Performance Rodeo.

That’s how Sergei Prokofiev described his Second Symphony, and it’s right on the nail – this is music from the machine age, forged in the furnace of revolution. For an artist as adventurous as LPO Conductor Emeritus Vladimir Jurowski, it’s an irresistible challenge, as well as a gripping counterpart to Ukrainian composer Anna Korsun’s all-too-contemporary study of an industrial landscape shattered by war. Expect nature music with a serious bite – but poetry, too, as pianist Anna Vinnitskaya embraces both the danger and the romance of Rachmaninov’s glittering Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

His music is clear yet rich in nuances: This is what makes the works of the year's ruler, Benjamin Britten (1913–1976), so incomparable. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt honored his English colleague, whom he never met in person, with a cantus. Britten himself explored nocturnal spheres in his Serenade and the later Nocturne. The tenor and horn are the outstanding players on this journey through darkness and dream. Sergei Prokofiev's Symphonie classique, sparkling with virtuosity, takes us back to the light of day: a classical hit in the best sense!

Mikhail Glinka is considered the first composer to strive to make uniquely Russian music. However, the overture to his most well-known opera Ruslan and Ludmila owes much to Western European tradition. It thus anticipates the works of Tchaikovsky, who was often derided in Russia as a "Westerner". After his 5th Symphony was performed in the last season, his 6th, "Pathétique," is now in the programme. His last work sounds at many points like an alternatingly angry and melancholic goodbye to the world. Prokofiev's violin concerto also seeks out a "new simplicity," much like all his earlier works, and a reconciliation of modernity and musical tradition.

Few works are as closely associated with Christmas and Epiphany as Pyotr Tchaikovsky's music for the ballet The Nutcracker. In this concert, conductor Christoph Koncz returns to Berwaldhallen to perform a suite based on Tchaikovsky's beloved music together with the Radio Symphony Orchestra. But first, Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1, nicknamed Classical, the contemporary composer Hannah Kendall's work The Spark Catchers, based on a poem about women who worked in a match factory in the 1880s.

who's music's being performed for the first time in this series of concerts, presented by the conductor Anja Bihlmaier. Grażyna Bacewicz, who was born in Poland, was a violinist, pianist and composer who taught at various conservatoires and wrote stories and books – an all-rounder and important representative of Polish music. Her concerto for strings draws an arc from neo-baroque to neo-classic, but is unmistakably 20th century music.

Tchaikovsky, with his First Symphony, makes a atmospheric declaration of love to the famous-infamous Russian winter with all its manifestations. In addition, two completely different but equally fascinating piano concertos are heard: Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto bursts with energy and sophistication. It is a youthful work full of spirit and shows Prokofiev as a true virtuoso of the piano. On the other hand, Ravel's Piano Concerto "for the left hand" is characterized by darker tones and was written for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in World War I. It is so cleverly composed that as a listener, one does not realize that in this almost 20-minute concert, piano and orchestra only play together for six minutes. A challenge for our Artist in Residence, who once again can demonstrate the full range of his abilities.

A work of dark, searching grandeur, Prokofiev’s Fourth Symphony gathers sumptuous themes from his ballet music, revised in the postwar shadow of Stalin’s Russia. Britten’s Violin Concerto, a searing response to the Spanish Civil War, features James Ehnes, “a flawless technician and a serious, ever-perceptive musician” (The Guardian). Providing contrast is Debussy’s dreamy and sensuous prelude.
