Creating something new, bringing something into being that did not exist before: that is the meaning of the ancient Greek verb poiein. Sarah Ying Ma thought it a fitting name when she and her fellow Oberlin Conservatory students Max Ball, Jasper de Boor, and Drew Dansby founded a string quartet in Ohio in 2022. And the four of them hit the ground running: after just one year, the Poiesis Quartet — which collectively identifies as queer — shot straight to first prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Fun fact: their final round of rehearsals was propelled by a special sense of urgency, as they had accidentally prepared according to the previous year’s repertoire guidelines. More awards followed, most recently first prize at the renowned Banff International String Quartet Competition, which also comes with their debut at Lucerne Festival. The “American Dream” of this American quartet? Giving a platform to composers who do not belong to the traditional canon. They will fully embrace that artistic freedom in Lucerne as well: with Pisachi by Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, and a quartet by the Black composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, who fused classical, jazz, and pop idioms in his music.

The program opened with an unexpected Vivaldi: his Concerto for Two Cellos RV 531 , reimagined for cello (Cyrille Tricoire De Haro) and bassoon (Rodolphe Bernard). A rare dialogue between two instruments, between Baroque virtuosity and the complicity of the soloists. Mendelssohn then unfolded the legend of La Belle Mélusine , a fairy-tale overture with melodious waves. Ravel, with his Menuet antique , revived the grace of a bygone era, while Debussy, in Nuages ​​(from the Nocturnes ), suspended the sky in its luminous grays. As a grand finale, Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony burst forth in vibrant fanfares and majestic dances. A night of stars, breaths, and strings.

Supporting young musicians is especially close to Anne-Sophie Mutter’s heart. To this end, she founded the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation in 2008 and can now look back on an impressive roster of distinguished scholarship recipients, including Vilde Frang, Sergey Khachatryan, Daniel Müller-Schott, and Kian Soltani. Her latest discovery is Elias David Moncado, born in 2000: a German-Spanish-Malaysian violinist who won the Grand Prix and ten special prizes at the Karol Lipiński Competition in Poland, gave his first recital at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2025, and will release his debut album on the Warner Classics label in 2026. For this Lucerne debut, he will perform Maurice Ravel’s irresistible Violin Sonata, an American-inspired work with a “blue” movement at its center. Playing the “Ludwig, ex-Szigeti” Stradivari, he will also tackle high-virtuoso fare such as Franz Waxman’s finger-breaking Carmen Fantasie. And four more of Mutter’s protégés will also appear in this extraordinary debut concert, performing two brand-new pieces that Anne-Sophie Mutter commissioned especially for them to mark the 50th anniversary of her Lucerne stage debut — works now receiving their world premieres. For championing new music is another of this great virtuoso’s passions.

When the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra comes to Gustav Adolfs Torg, an evening of music awaits, spanning different eras and worlds. Few can match the dazzling brilliance and zen-like focus that Boris Giltburg brings to every performance. His latest Wigmore Hall recital would command attention for no other reason than its inclusion of Liszt’s Sonata in B minor, a titanic monument of Romantic music. Yet the Moscow-born Israeli pianist places Liszt’s single-movement masterwork in company with a succession of musically powerful, technically-demanding compositions, crowned by Gaspard de la nuit, Ravel’s mesmerising suite of character pieces.

Around 20 kilometers from the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle lies the Folkwang University of the Arts, one of the most renowned musical talent factories in the German university landscape. Henri Sigfridsson, a Finnish musician, has been a professor there since 2011, fostering musical excellence in the next generation. He is also a successful pianist, performing in major concert halls and at international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival. In 1994, he won first prize at the International Franz Liszt Competition in Weimar, and in this concert he will also play excerpts from the composer's "Harmonies poétiques et religieuses," such as the serenely meditative "Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude" and the heroic "Funérailles." In this piano extra, Sigfridsson shares the stage with Vincent Heeren, born in Herne in 2009, who was accepted into his piano class as a junior student at the age of nine. With gripping virtuosity, the provocative images of Nikolaus Lenau's Faust poem are translated into music in "Mephisto Waltz No. 1." The concert opens with "Le tombeau de Couperin," a suite in the spirit of classical French music—and a tribute by Ravel to his friends who died in the war.

After a long hiatus, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) returns to the Bad Hersfeld Festival in 2026. Under the direction of chief conductor Alain Altinoglu, they will present a concert for the whole family against the impressive backdrop of the abbey ruins. The melodies have already captivated countless young and old with classical music. This program will feature a whole menagerie of animals, as well as colorful portraits of well-known fairytale characters such as Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, and the Empress of the Pagodas.

This concert combines diverse approaches to compositions for wind ensembles to create an ambitious sound experience. Franz Danzi's primary intention was to establish a love for the genre among music lovers of his time. Beethoven's Septet (as a chamber music solitaire), despite its status as an occasional composition, had an unintentional influence on subsequent generations. And in Maurice Ravel's Autobiographical Sketch, he notes that the Homage des Tombeau is "directed less to Couperin alone than to French music of the 18th century."

The barking of a dog, the buzzing of flies, a drunkard staggering home: these are just a few of the pictures ingeniously painted in Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Published in 1725, his set of four violin concertos was staggeringly ahead of its time, a forerunner to the ‘programme music’ of Liszt, Berlioz and Richard Strauss over a century later.

Still, it is the musical backdrop to these events – the atmosphere Vivaldi creates across the length of each concerto – that sticks with the listener longest. This rich, shimmering collection is a celebration of contrasts: from spring’s freshness and summer’s heat to the mellow fruitfulness of autumn and the chill of winter.

Music is reborn again and again in an orchestral concert of breathtaking originality: from Ravel’s jazz infusions of the 1920s to Wigglesworth’s time-tripping Concerto, you are invited to a world of limitless possibility.

Elizabeth Ogonek’s All These Lighted Things asks the orchestra to dance, drawing fascinating new sounds from every instrument. The composer remarks that the piece is about the casting away of darkness; that it expresses an “overwhelming…happiness and joy”. Inspired by Thomas Merton’s poem about the oneness of the spiritual universe, the third movement in particular depicts the orchestra as a kind of “community”

Ravel had a revelatory visit to the United States in 1928, where he heard George Gershwin at the Cotton Club in Harlem. He gave a lecture the same year, instructing American musicians to “Take Jazz Seriously!”, and took his own advice by paying a generous tribute to it in his sassy, sumptuous Piano Concerto in G. A few years earlier, Ravel had composed La Valse, a kind of “biography” of the waltz from elegant beginning to increasingly wild end.

Ryan Wigglesworth’s Piano Concerto slowly awakens into an intriguing soundworld, then looks back through musical history. Piano and orchestra engage in a quizzical, sometimes combative conversation on the subject of folksongs, chorales, and gigues.

Steven Osborne’s versatile and responsive style is perfect for both concertos: the playful Ravel and the intriguing, understated Wigglesworth.

Among Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's instrumental concertos, his Violin Concerto has held a particularly high status since its composition and premiere in the mid-1840s. As a work of great melodic qualities, harmonic finesse, and rhythmic intensity, it has not been without reason that it has garnered much admiration. Maurice Ravel's ballet music for Daphnis et Chloé , composed and premiered for the Ballets Russes in 1912 , is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of French Impressionism, featuring floating sounds and rich color nuances, as well as a wordless chorus. A story from Greek mythology is impressively relived with and through music.

In his 2023 CSO subscription debut, Conrad Tao gave a “dazzling, staggering” performance of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, wrote the Chicago Tribune, in which Tao “carried his melodies masterfully.” As part of the CSO’s monthlong focus on American music, the Illinois native returns with a selection of Gershwin song arrangements interspersed with works by Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Schoenberg and Robert Schumann.

Peruvian conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the San Francisco Symphony in a globe-hopping, toe-tapping program that’s bursting with rhythm and color. Among the highlights is Shift, a new trombone concerto by Lima native Jimmy López—performed by SF Symphony Principal Trombone Timothy Higgins—inspired by “the behavior of waves as observed through the Doppler effect.” The Spanish composer Joaquín Turina wrote his most famous work, Danzas fantásticas, in 1919, inspired by the novel La orgía by José Más. Printed on the score at the start of each dance are quotations from the novel, which convey the ecstatic splendor of Turina’s music. After writing two light but entertaining violin concertos, Saint-Saëns upped his game in 1880. In his Violin Concerto No. 3, he delivered a deliciously scored masterpiece characterised by its brilliant solo part, building intensity, room-stilling slow movement and finale inspired by the music of the country it was written in: Spain. Alexandra Conunova plays perhaps the greatest French violin concerto in between music that finds hope from grief: Ravel’s etched memorials to fallen comrades and the symphony in which Sibelius wrestles the most inspiring optimism from music born of tragedy.

Fazıl Say received minutes of standing ovation after his captivating recital at the Mozart Week 2025 in the sold-out Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation. The celebrated pianist and composer from Turkey likes to describe himself as a bridge-builder between East and West, between early and contemporary music, between classical and jazz. His role models are the virtuosos of the 18th and 19th centuries who captivated audiences at their concerts, including with their own works. Thus, in his masterpiece, he draws a fascinating arc from Mozart's piano sonata with the famous "Alla turca" to the Impressionists Debussy and Ravel, and finally to an impressive selection of his own compositions.
