Beethoven's Thrilling 5th Symphony

One of the most controversial of all concert pieces, Ravel’s Boléro (1928) is both an incomparable feast for the ears
– languid, modal melodies, crooning saxophones, Spanish dance rhythms – and a puzzle for the brain, as it is a work
whose marvelous variety and sensational climax are built on mechanistic repetition. The composer himself once
half-jokingly characterized it as “a crescendo without music.” This evening, the famous Boléro is matched with
Rachmaninov’s riveting, perennially popular Symphonic Dances for orchestra, and the Variaciones concertantes of
Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera, in which a lyrical theme for cello and harp is taken on a tour of the whole
orchestra.

The Sacramento Youth Symphony Premier Orchestra celebrates its 70th Anniversary with a landmark concert event. The 75-piece orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Ryan Murray, will perform Aaron Copland’s spirited, folk-inspired ballet suite Rodeo, featuring the instantly recognizable final movement, “Hoe-Down.”

The program also includes Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, Nos. 5 and 6, alongside two outstanding student concerto performances. Emrys Tu will perform Maurice Ravel’s vibrant, jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in G Major (Allegramente), while Leanna Kim takes the stage with Brahms’ monumental Violin Concerto in D Major (Allegro non troppo), a tour de force that blends grandeur and intensity with moments of profound lyricism.

This will be a great joy, as we'll be igniting four sonic fireworks. Our energy will be further fueled by two Spaniards – the conductor Roberto González-Monjas and the pianist Javier Perianes. We'll begin with a humorous role-playing exercise: Manuel de Falla's ballet "El sombrero de tres picos" ("The Three-Cornered Hat") from 1919 is set in a small Andalusian town – and for this turbulent comedy of errors, we can create witty onomatopoeia and lively dances. Equally atmospheric is his piece "Nights in Spanish Gardens," completed in 1916: enchanting impressions for piano and orchestra with which the composer wanted to "evoke places, moods, and feelings." This also resonates with Debussy, who preferred to listen to the wind for his music, "which tells us the story of this world" – and who even initially wanted to become a sailor.

To close out the year, this program is a showcase of the exceptional students of the School of Music. George Gershwin's wonderfully colorful inspired work, American in Paris, will kick things off. Winners of the Dean's Concerto Competition will solo with the orchestra-highlighting both graduate and undergraduate talent. The evening closes with an orchestral showpiece for every instrument, Ravel's Bolero.

Diana Tishchenko likely still has fond memories of her last performance with the Duisburg Philharmonic : In June 2024, the Ukrainian-born violinist, who was born in Crimea, played a violin concerto by the Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych – and received enthusiastic applause from the audience for this politically powerful statement. Now she returns as a chamber musician and, together with her piano partner José Gallardo, who returns after his Duisburg debut in the 2024/2025 season, will present European composers who have played with the soundscape of America. The Frenchman Ravel incorporated elements of jazz, which was still new and exciting at the time, into his violin sonata. Jazz harmonies and sophisticated rhythms can also be heard in the concert fantasy that Igor Frolov compiled on themes from George Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess," including the catchy tune "Summertime." César Franck, for his part, composed his violin sonata—still a classic in the repertoire today—as a wedding gift for the Belgian violin virtuoso and fellow composer Eugène Ysaÿe. Ysaÿe, too, dedicated his sonata to a famous colleague: the Romanian composer George Enescu, with whom he once performed together.

MSO First Associate Concertmaster Ilana Setapen commands the stage with Arturo Márquez’s folk-infused violin concerto Fandango. “I had known this music since I was a child,” says Márquez, “listening to it in the cinema, on the radio, and listening to my father, a mariachi violinist (Arturo Márquez, Sr.) interpret huastecos and mariachi music.” Márquez says Fandango adheres to his “seven capital principles: tonality, modality, melody, rhythm, imaginary folk tradition, harmony, and orchestral color.” Guest conductor Asher Fisch leads this vivid program, which concludes with two Spain-inspired pieces by Ravel, as well as Turina’s Danzas fantásticas; Turina’s trio of evocative dances are set in the Aragon, Basque, and Andalusian regions of Spain.

The most famous motif of the Fifth Symphony of Sibelius comes in the final movement. Often drawing inspiration from nature, Sibelius’s connection with the Finnish landscape was integral to his identity. “Today at ten to eleven I saw sixteen swans,” he wrote in his diary in 1915. “One of my greatest experiences! Lord God, what beauty! They circled over me for a long time. Disappeared into the solar haze like a gleaming silver ribbon.” This moment was the inspiration for what he would call the “Swan Hymn,” the swinging horn motif that evokes the graceful beating of the swans’ wings as the woodwinds’ countermelody suggests their call.

Doppelganger: Shadow of the Self
"Doppelgänger: Shadows of the Ego." In her program with this title, Svetlana Andreeva embarks on a search for the self in music. It should be said at the outset that she has long since found her (artistic) self – as evidenced not least by her brilliant victory at the Concours international de piano d'Orléans 2024. The competition is entirely dedicated to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries – a home game for the Ukrainian, who is a passionate interpreter of contemporary works and studied composition in addition to piano. In her program, Svetlana Andreeva focuses almost exclusively on early 20th-century repertoire: With Leoš Janáček, she gropes her way through the mists of his eponymous cycle, peers behind Karol Szymanowski's masks, and experiences descent into hell and redemption in Alexander Scriabin's "Black" and "White" Mass. Anyone who thinks of Edward Elgar only in terms of Pomp and Circumstance or Last Night of the Proms should listen carefully to his Cello Concerto. There is perhaps no better work to approach the British late romantic composer. He composed this deeply emotional work under the impression of his beloved wife Alice's serious illness and confessed after her death: 'I cannot imagine ever completing another piece. The Cello Concerto was indeed to remain his last major composition. The work has long played an important role in Anastasia Kobekina's life. It is full of hope, she says. It has a desperate desire to fight, and at the same time it has these enchanting moments of joy and lightness. It is the centrepiece of Kobekina's great career, which the Alte Oper has been following closely for several years.

The Spanish Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the first Spanish orchestra to grace the series for decades, brings with them a Mediterranean-inspired programme. Rapidly making a mark on the international scene, their Music Director, Roberto González-Monjas, will be joined by “the new face of classical guitar”, Thibaut Garcia, who will take the spotlight for Rodrigo’s exquisite Concierto de Aranjuez. The concert opens with the fiery elegance of Falla’s Three Dances from his ballet The Three-Cornered Hat. After the interval, journey through the enchanting world of Ravel’s whimsical Mother Goose Suite and soak up the lush, evocative portrait of Seville’s soul in Turina’s Sinfonia sevillana. The concert culminates in a mesmerizing crescendo with Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro.

Popular Dutch duo-pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen return to Symphony Hall for a BSO-commissioned world premiere. This music was written especially for them by American composer Andrew Norman, winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for his orchestral work Play. Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite brings the composer’s mastery of orchestral color to his fairy-tale suite, originally written for piano, four-hands. Closing the program is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s tour-de-force for orchestra, by turns powerfully energetic and meltingly lyrical: his Symphonic Dances, the composer’s final work.

Our first visit from a Spanish orchestra in many a year brings this exciting young ensemble from the port city of A Coruña. They’re joined by Thibaut Garcia, who’s been hailed as ‘the new face of classical guitar’ after winning every major international guitar competition within the space of just a few months. His performance of Rodrigo’s evergreen Concierto de Aranjuez – so popular that it’s been recorded over a hundred times – is the centrepiece of a richly varied programme from Spain and France.

A rhythm, a flute, and a melody you’ll never forget… it’s hard to say what exactly makes Ravel’s Boléro so irresistible. But this French composer had Spanish blood, and tonight’s concert is filled with the sunshine, the fragrance and the pure, intoxicating passion of Spain at its most seductive. Wild, whirling dances from Falla and Turina, delicate fairy tales from Ravel – it’s a fiesta in sound, even before Boléro strikes up that unstoppable beat.

But we couldn’t spend a night in Spain without hearing the classical guitar, and tonight the Coruña-based Spanish Galicia Symphony Orchestra is joined by dazzling young French guitarist Thibaut Garcia in that most Spanish of all guitar concertos: Rodrigo’s haunting and much-loved Concierto de Aranjuez.

Ewan is one of the most prominent oboe soloists in the UK. In 2020 Ewan won the woodwind final of BBC Young Musician, advancing to the Grand Final, and giving an “exemplary, richly shaded account” The Guardian, of Navarro’s “Legacy” concerto with the BBC Philharmonic. Since the competition he has been performing as a soloist in recitals around the UK.

Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is an icon in Spanish music, and surely the greatest guitar concerto ever written. It’s the centrepiece of a programme that also transports us to Andalucia with works by Joaquín Turina and Manuel de Falla. And then we’re in the company of Maurice Ravel, born to a Basque mother by the Spanish border, with two of his most enchanting pieces: the Mother Goose suite and the indelible Boléro.

Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G was inspired by the jazz he heard on a tour of the United States. Ravel frames a serenely beautiful Adagio with outer movements of carefree, effervescent energy. It’s the perfect showcase for the ‘magician’s fingers’ (Le Monde) of Bruce Liu, winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition.   

Tchaikovsky himself said that his Fifth Symphony represented ‘a complete resignation before Fate’, but that hasn’t stopped it becoming a firm audience favourite. It opens with the sound of funereal footsteps on the clarinet. A singing horn melody gives the second movement a more hopeful mood, but the fateful ‘footsteps’ theme returns in the third movement waltz, and triumphs in the stormy finale.

Composer and multi-faceted performer Caroline Shaw became the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music at age 30. Paris has long been a haven for innovative composers, whose music exists in an endless variety of delightful textures—from Saint-Saëns’s classically elegant trio to Fauré’s tempestuous piano quartet. At the heart of this program is the incomparable soprano Erica Baikoff, who lends her “absolutely beautiful voice” (Bachtrack) to Ravel’s shimmering take on The One Thousand and One Nights.

It’s the perfect showcase for the “magician’s fingers” (Le Monde) of Bruce Liu, winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition.  

Tchaikovsky himself said that his Fifth Symphony represented “a complete resignation before Fate”, but that hasn’t stopped it becoming a firm audience favourite. It opens with the sound of funereal footsteps on the clarinet. A singing horn melody gives the second movement a more hopeful mood, but the fateful ‘footsteps’ theme returns in the third movement waltz, and triumphs in the stormy finale.

Over the past two decades, French ensemble Quatuor Ébène has thrilled audiences with performances ranging from the complete Beethoven cycle to forays into Left Bank jazz. From one of Mozart’s rare string quartets in a minor key, which reveals an emotional depth that would go on to influence generations of composers, to Ravel’s only String Quartet, a groundbreaking work that broke free from traditional forms, and finally Brahms’ String Quartet Op. 51 No. 2, a masterpiece shaped over nearly eight years of meticulous devotion. This program, where passion, innovation, and craftsmanship converge at the highest level, is a powerful testament to the Ébène Quartet’s unparalleled mastery.

This concert features the world premiere of Highsmith winner Pierre Fontaine’s Ancient Dances in Modern Times. The Highsmith Award, endowed by Jim Highsmith, is the Conservatory’s top composition prize. Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin features six movements, all based on traditional dance movements from the French Baroque suite: Prélude, Fugue, Forlane, Rigaudon, Menuet, and Toccata and is dedicated to the memory of his friends lost in the first World War. Jean Sibelius wrote The Oceanides for his one and only trip to the United States in 1914 meanwhile Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is noted for its rhapsodic nature and technical challenges, all of which are dear to violinists. This concert features SFCM Concert Competition Winner Jeehin Kim and student conductor Jason Gluck.

After losing his right arm in the First World War, pianist Paul Wittgenstein refused to give up his art and commissioned Maurice Ravel to write his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The result is one of the most captivating works in the piano repertoire, blending jazzy rhythms with profound beauty. Pianist Cédric Tiberghien brings this masterpiece to life. Jean Sibelius’ First Symphony combines a Tchaikovskian tradition with hints of the unique sound world he would later develop. With great flair, Nuno Coelho leads the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra through this rich and colourful programme.

This recital by Bomsori brings together French and Polish violin classics, including brooding, bluesy sonatas by Ravel and Debussy and opera-inspired works by Massenet and Wieniawski. Bomsori, a Deutsche Grammophon artist, also dusts off Szymanowski’s Nocturne and Tarntella, a fanciful take on Arabic and Spanish music that was once a favorite of 20th-century virtuosos.

Ravel's Piano Concerto was written for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in the First World War. The paradoxical sonic power with which the soloist performs in this virtuoso concerto is all the more remarkable – with exaggeration, parody, and the constant impression of two hands on the keyboard. Almost ten years earlier, La Valse portrayed the glorious collapse of society dancing to its doom. Pēteris Vasks depicts the opposite path: his response to the loud, garish, and chaotic is silence, to which he ultimately returns – his premonition of eternity.

With Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso, expect to enjoy the vibrant contrast inspired by Spanish dance rhythms and melodies. The concert ends with the audible symphonic storytelling, colorful orchestration, and emotional intensity of Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1919 version).
