The Seattle Symphony Chorale joins the orchestra for Poulenc's first choral work with orchestra, the 12-movement Stabat Mater — penned in response to the sudden death of his friend. Poulenc was inspired by his pilgrimage to the holy shrine of the Black Madonna of Rocamadour, which reinvigorated his Catholic faith, and the medieval Stabat Mater hymn to the Virgin Mary.

Imagery and sensual sound are the key concepts of the concert program of French music, in which the name Thierry Escaich (*1965) stands out. He is among the crème de la crème of organists of our time and was appointed titular organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris when the famous church was ceremoniously reopened in December 2024 after a devastating fire. At the same time, Escaich is one of the leading French composers of our time. With this dual talent, he continues a venerable tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. We welcome him to Dortmund in this dual role: as soloist in his organ concerto Quatre Visages du temps . Escaich is above all a master of timbre, who drew inspiration for this large-scale, four-movement work from a journey through musical history, from the Baroque passacaglia to contemporary disco music.

A single hand must conquer the entire keyboard. Maurice Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand was originally composed for the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Yuja Wang, the extravagant, top-class pianist, takes on this challenge of extreme dexterity and subsequently plays a second piano concerto. In Einojuhani Rautavaara's work, composed in 1969, cantabile melodies and arpeggios meet a modern sound language – a powerful firework display between tradition and innovation.

Edwar Elgar sat down at the piano after a tiring day of lessons and played a random melody that caught his wife’s attention. Without further ado, he began to improvise variations on this enchanting melody, inspired by the different characters of his friends and activities around him: a »gruff disposition«, a »stuttering girlfriend«, his first attempts at playing the piano, a dog tumbling down an embankment, or – not to be forgotten – the world-famous »Nimrod« variation, with which Elgar honours his best friend. The solution to the riddle, the enigma of the variations, which according to Elgar is hidden within the composition, remains unsolved to this day.

He is one of the most talented Polish violinists of his generation and has won numerous national and international violin competitions. In 2011, he graduated with honours from the Ignacy Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznan as a student of Prof. Dr Marcin Baranowski. In 2012 he obtained his second master's degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam as a student of Ilya Grubert.

"Peace doesn't come by itself," Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv said in an interview: "Without active commitment, it won't exist." And she herself sets a good example, with the resources available to her as a musician. In 2023, for example, she conducted a solidarity concert for Ukraine in Duisburg with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, which she founded. Now she returns with a piece that she also initiated. "Oksana Lyniv's idea to compose a work based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's 'The Little Prince' immediately inspired me," says composer Eduard Resatsch. He sees the abstract figure of the prince as a beacon of hope in a modern world: "For me, this fairy tale embodies the comprehensive idea of ​​universal humanism; it is a metaphor for world peace – especially in today's world, when we must say goodbye to many illusions." Following the world premiere in Paris on February 25, 2026, Oksana Lyniv will conduct the German premiere of this hopeful work in Duisburg. Following this, the young Ukrainian pianist Illia Ovcharenko will play—at the conductor's special request—the "Piano Concerto for the Left Hand," which Ravel composed for Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in the First World War. The concert will then conclude with Camille Saint-Saëns's magnificent "Organ Symphony."

It is and remains a musical mystery: Schubert’s String Trio D 471, a fascinating fragment of a work which, although it remained unfinished, provides a deep insight into the composer’s melodic inventiveness and harmonic sensibility. Only the first movement is complete. The Andante sostenuto, which has only survived in fragmentary form and is rarely heard, although only 39 bars long, gives an idea of the further musical ideas Franz Schubert harboured for this trio. In the middle of the programme are two works for violin and violoncello that were written around 100 years apart: Maurice Ravel’s colourful sonata »A la mémoire de Claude Debussy« and the world premiere of a new work by David Philip Hefti, which was written especially for Hellen Weiß and Gabriel Schwabe.

The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra is the oldest continuously operating orchestra in the state of Oregon. From its inception in 1906 as a collegiate orchestra composed of nine members, the symphony has grown into a full symphonic orchestra performing 3 major classical concerts, a holiday concert, and a children’s concert each season. Professional musicians from throughout the Willamette Valley are joined by talented community members, OSU faculty, and OSU students representing a wide span of majors across campus. Repertoire from recent seasons includes Strauss’ Alpine Symphony, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, Ravel’s “Daphnis and Chloe,” and Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.

At the moment, the commissioned work is being written for the three musicians – this time a very special piece about a frog who just wants to chill on his sofa.

In 2024, the Trio con Brio Copenhagen celebrated its 25th stage anniversary: ​​a quarter-century of ensemble history, during which the three have delighted audiences with their characteristic blend of harmonious interplay and instrumental perfection. They have already demonstrated their talent in Duisburg, too, in the 2022/2023 season with works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert, among others. This time, the program features Lili Boulanger, one of the most gifted composers of her time: she was the first woman ever to win the famous Rome Prize before her tragically early death from tuberculosis at the age of 24. However, she was still able to complete a pair of unlikely works for trio: one, "D'un matin de printemps," full of enchanting spring colors and hope, the other, "D'un soir triste," full of despair and melancholy. The only piano trio by Maurice Ravel follows in a cheerful and relaxed manner, in which the composer plays with sophisticated sound mixtures and intricate rhythms, while Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Piano Trio No. 2 strikes a particularly passionate tone and is, as the composer himself remarked, "a bit nauseating to play."

This clear-your-diaries concert features the combined talents of three musicians at the very top of their game – composer John Adams, pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. After the Fall acknowledges Ólafsson’s ‘masterly grace and precision’ (San Francisco Chronicle) and affinity for Bach, quoting from Bach’s C minor Prelude. The dreamy soundworld of its opening has drawn comparisons with Ravel and Bartók. But its expert handling of energy and rhythm are 100% Adams.

Now things are getting exciting! Maurice Ravel characterized his orchestral work "La Valse," originally intended as a ballet and composed between 1906 and 1920, as "a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, which conjures up the impression of a fantastic and fatal whirlwind." The virtuosity of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 is also almost dizzying. The composer himself played the piano part at the premiere in Chicago in 1921—and prescribed himself three hours of daily practice in preparation for this pianistic rollercoaster ride. The unpredictable wheel of Fortuna, the goddess of fate,is celebrated at the beginning and end of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." Orff used texts from a song codex from around 1300, kept in the Benediktbeuren monastery, as the basis for a monumental series of solo and choral songs, whose archaic style, with its particular emphasis on rhythm, continues to fascinate to this day.

Three of the best-loved pieces in the symphonic repertoire come together in this concert which sweeps forward from the thrilling theatre of Benjamin Britten’s "Sea Interludes" from his opera Peter Grimes, depicting the changing colors, the play of light and the terrifying storms of the North Sea between the UK and Germany, to Ravel’s beloved G Major Piano Concerto, with its glittering echoes of American jazz in the outer movements, and a haunting tribute to Bach and Mozart in the lyrical central movement. This concert ends with one of the best known of all symphonies, Tchaikovsky’s Sixth, nicknamed by his brother “Pathétique”, in response to the music’s terrifying mixture of drama and heartfelt melodies.

Maurice Ravel's cheerful piano concerto combines Basque folkloric sounds with bittersweet jazz, while the African-American composer Florence Price, in her first symphony, composed a mischievous yet majestic Juba dance instead of the classical Scherzo.

Canadian phenom Stewart Goodyear stars in Saint-Saëns' striking Piano Concerto No. 5 (known as The Egyptian) composed during a trip to Cairo.

The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra's own Malin Broman and Rick Stotijn premiere Sally Beamish's Double Concerto for Violia and Double Bass together with world renowned conductor Pierre Bleuse. The concert begins with Maurice Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin , with nods to Baroque composer Francoise Couperin's music, while each movement is a tribute to Ravel's two brothers and several friends who died during the First World War.

The annual free community concert this season features selections from Mozart’s Symphony No. 1 in E-flat Major, Debussy’s Gymnopedies, Ravel’s Bolero, and Frostiana, a setting of Robert Frost’s poems in a seven-movement suite of choral art songs with chamber orchestra by Randall Thompson. The evening also features the world premiere of a new piece by a Music-COMP student. Conducted by VSO Music Director Andrew Crust.

A symphony transformed into a multicoloured vortex of desire; and another, split into pieces and rebuilt as a musical monument. Sounds fantastic? You’d expect nothing less when Sir George Benjamin is conducting. The LPO’s new Composer-in-Residence is a sonic alchemist in his own right – a composer who transforms subtle and exquisite sounds into vast emotional landscapes. He’ll conduct his own work Palimpsests, too: music inspired by the many different tales written on medieval manuscripts, and framed tonight by masterpieces that set Benjamin’s own imagination on fire.

This program, entitled "Rooted Voices: Folk, Faith, and the Modern Imagination", invites audiences on a journey through works that explore the intersections of heritage, spirituality, and modern expression. Featuring music by Joseph Bologne, Charles Ives, Lili Boulanger, William Grant Still, and Maurice Ravel, the program reflects how composers across centuries have turned to the spiritual and the vernacular—folk melodies, sacred songs, and cultural memory—to express both individuality and universality in sound.

Sergei Rachmaninov's First Piano Sonata, created in Dresden, is one of the great works he composed in our city. He was inspired by Goethe's "Faust" and assigned one of the main characters to each of the three movements: Faust, Gretchen, and Mephisto. The piece marks the beginning of another evening in our series "Stars at the Piano", featuring none other than Artist in Residence Boris Giltburg. Following the sonata is an arrangement for piano of Prokofiev's ballet music "Romeo and Juliet" – an opportunity for Giltburg to present the tragic and tender moments of the famous love story with compelling clarity. Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit", the third work of the evening, is inspired by dark poetry and pushes the limits of what is possible on the piano with its dream-like and devilishly difficult passages. The highly acclaimed pianist demonstrates in this recital why he is considered one of the outstanding musicians of his generation. By invitation of the Dresden Philharmonic in cooperation with DK Deutsche Klassik.

The young Chinese Canadian pianist Bruce Liu has caught the attention of listeners worldwide, praised for “playing of breathtaking beauty” (BBC Music Magazine) and an “effortless virtuosity [that] consistently oozes charisma” (Classics Today). Ever since taking first prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2021, Liu’s star has been on the rise, with warmly received recitals on many of the world’s most prestigious concert stages.
