A major turning point came in 2019 when he won the prestigious Vigo International Piano Competition – with legendary pianist Martha Argerich as jury chair. Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major is probably the most excitingly orchestrated concerto for a solo instrument with orchestra. Cheerful and brilliant at the same time, it has been a favorite work of concert audiences since its premiere in 1932. It begins furiously with a crack of a whip, created by two pieces of wood connected by a hinge and struck together. The second, slow movement is often referred to as one of the most beautiful 'Songs without Words' in music history. It is embedded in the surreal circus atmosphere of the first movement with hints of Ravel's Basque homeland, blues and jazz souvenirs from his trips to America, and the rapid finale in the style of a perpetuum mobile. "La valse" by Ravel probably needs no description - the symphonic waltz is one of the most popular works of the 20th century and regularly excites the audience. The Concerto for Orchestra by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski can also arouse enthusiasm. It was premiered with great success in Warsaw in 1954 and is the last work in which Lutosławski uses folkloric elements. With it, the composer has said everything he had to say in this musical language...

Maestro Gomez has conceived a “completion” by commissioning Tucson composer Dan Coleman to compose a work connecting the Requiem to Mozart’s choral gem Ave verum corpus. Rediscover 20th-century classics that represent landmark moments in The Philadelphia Orchestra’s history! The Orchestra performed the 1922 U.S. premiere of Stravinsky’sThe Rite of Spring, the work that had so scandalized Paris audiences only nine years earlier. In 1934, the Orchestra gave the U.S. premiere of Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto, one of 11 of the composer's works this Orchestra brought to America for the first time. In these concerts, Shostakovich’s witty, irreverent Concerto will be performed by the “astonishing” Seong-Jin Cho, a pianist of “sensitivity, nuance, tremendous fluidity and elegance of style” (Bachtrack).

The organ world of this concert offers a wealth of evocative colors and magical impressions – and even a few mythical figures play their games. Johannes Skoog, born in Stockholm in 1992, will bring them musically to life on the keys and pedals: He won First Prize at the Canadian International Organ Competition in 2024 and was recently appointed organist to the Swedish royal court. He opens his Bamberg program with Prokofiev's Toccata of 1912, a "devilishly witty" virtuoso piece of classical modernism. Debussy's sensuously shimmering composition, written in 1894, is characterized by an arabesque-like main theme: A faun revels in intoxicating memories of beautiful nymphs on a summer afternoon.

We open this series by honoring the memory of Boise composer David Alan Earnest with a performance of his thrilling overture Turbulence, composed for the Boise Phil in 2013. What, pray tell, is a cornet? One could say it's the soft, rounded sister of the radiant trumpet. Where the trumpet blares, the cornet caresses. French composers, in particular, employ it when a brass instrument's color is needed, perhaps for a love scene, a painful farewell, a yearning cantilena. For the first time, our principal trumpeter Sandro Hirsch, together with his colleagues, presents the cornet in a chamber concert with the Beethoven Orchestra, with two works for the same instrumentation: Danish and French Romanticism, flanked by the quintessential Impressionist string quartet: Ravel's only, mysterious, and rhythmically pulsating String Quartet in F major.

"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann. Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. Ranging from the Baroque to the present day, with a particular focus on the Romantic period, featuring Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and the multitalented E.T.A. Hoffmann (who, in an idealized form, became the title character in Offenbach's opera), "The Fantastic" will be explored with a variety of chamber music works in diverse ensembles.

Trio Seoul was founded in 2022 by Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho, pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, and cellist and Bienen alumnus Brannon Cho. All three are top prize winners and laureates of prestigious international competitions including the Concours musical international de Montréal, the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The trio regularly collaborates with artists in multiple fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists, and its members have appeared as soloists with celebrated orchestras throughout the world. Young hearts run free. Mozart was still a teenager when he wrote his Fifth Violin Concerto, but genius is genius and the result is the sparkiest, quirkiest and most stylish showpiece ever written for a world-class violinist. Maria Włoszczowska brings it to life today – a sparkling centrepiece to a concert that begins with Ravel’s bittersweet homage to a vanished world, and ends with Beethoven in full, dazzling flight. His youthful Second Symphony is daring, dashing, and packed with musical humour – perfect, in other words, for conductor Erina Yashima and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" was the breakthrough for Claude Debussy in 1894, both for musical Impressionism and modern music in general. For a "symphonic poem," the roughly ten-minute work is quite short. It is introduced by an ascending and descending flute melody and becomes the nucleus of the piece. What was new about it was the dissolution of conventional tonality. Debussy was inspired to create this by a Javanese gamelan orchestra he had heard at the Paris World's Fair in 1889, whose music "made our tonic and dominant appear like ghosts."

Early modernist Paris must have been a fascinating place. Where else in the world did such artistic diversity exist? Musical life oscillated between Impressionism and Neoclassicism, jazz and operetta; there were the "old" artists around Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré, the young artists around the Groupe des Six; there were Russians, Spaniards, and Czechs, and of course mavericks like the legendary Erik Satie. The city was thus a true melting pot and, at the same time, a laboratory of sounds.

It’s a match made in heaven: revered conductor Riccardo Muti and his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra, reconvening in Berkeley for a program of orchestral gems for one night only. Muti, who turns 84 this year, stepped down as the esteemed ensemble’s music director to assume the role of Music Director Emeritus for Life in 2023, but his close rapport with this group of remarkable musicians continues to enchant.

Under the inspired direction of Diego Ceretta, principal conductor of the ORT-Orchestra of Florence, the Orchestre National Montpellier transports you from ancient tragedy to the splendors of Rome, from Viennese salons to the pictorial visions of Mussorgsky. The evening opens with the poignant Cede pietati, dolor by Silvia Colasanti, an immersion with expressive textures in the tragic world of Medea. Then Respighi unfolds his Fontane di Roma , a true pictorial symphony where the water games of the Roman fountains gush through the orchestra and where each sound tableau is a celebration of light and movement. After the intermission, Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales evoke the elegance of the 19th century in the refined language of the early modernity of the 20th century . Finally, here are Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition . Orchestrated by Ravel, this masterpiece is a veritable sound museum where each piece brilliantly depicts an imaginary canvas.

Under the direction of General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski, the Bavarian State Orchestra will perform three European works from the fin de siècle to the 1920s, which, in their contrasts, reflect the upheavals of the early 20th century. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s symphonic poem The Isle of the Dead , inspired by the haunting gloom of Arnold Böcklin’s painting of the same name, will be contrasted by Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, with which Italian pianist Beatrice Rana will make her Bavarian State Opera debut. The concerto, perfectly formed in classicism, embodies the radiant optimism of the 1920s with elements of blues and jazz. Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra stands between the melancholy of the afterlife and the affirmation of life: first performed in 1896 at the end of the 19th century, this tone poem, rich in contrast and unresolved in its conflicts, already points the way to what is to come. The modernity of the composition, which was expected with suspicion and received with astonishment in its time, is demonstrated not least by its use in Stanley Kubrick's monumental film 2001: A Space Odyssey , which in turn points far into the future.

The unique and startling architectural art has been called wow architecture, and the word is a good way to describe the music of the Frenchman Guillaume Connesson. Connesson's Flute Concerto No. 2 is subtitled Danses concertantes, "Concert Dances", which ecstatically push through the boundaries of style and genre. Tapiola Sinfonietta is one of the commissioners of this exciting new work, and the soloist will be Emily Beynon, principal flutist of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra.

A good cliffhanger is the most important thing: Only those who are almost bursting with suspense at the end of a story stay hooked and want to know what happens next as quickly as possible. Directors of soaps and series use this trick, which they may have copied from Scheherazade: A Persian king has married her for one day and one night, after which she is to die. “Vivacious, funny, heroic, eloquent, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and wholly irresistible” – this was a critic’s verdict on Anders Hillborg’s Piano Concerto No. 2 after its world premiere in San Francisco in October 2023 with Emanuel Ax and Esa-Pekka Salonen: “You can’t help but love the results.” Now, this 22-minute “fascinating ball of fun,” written specifically for Ax, will be performed again by Ax and Salonen along with the BRSO. The work is flanked by Ravel’s harmonically refined, rhythmically sensuous, and melodically captivating Le Tombeau de Couperin, which is dedicated to the great French Baroque harpsichordist François Couperin, and Hector Berlioz’s aesthetically uncompromising Symphonie fantastique, whose premiere in 1830 led some to suspect that Berlioz had gone mad, while others heralded him as an icon of modern music.

With Le Tombeau de Couperin, Maurice Ravel creates a musical monument to one of the greatest composers of the French Baroque – François Couperin. In his Enigma Variations, Edward Elgar portrays friends and companions. But who lies behind these musical character studies was a mystery for a long time. That has long been revealed, but the magic remains. And Brahms's only violin concerto would be unthinkable without Joseph Joachim. The star violinist not only advised Brahms, he wrestled with him over every note. The result: one of the most popular works in violin literature. At the helm is Finnegan Downie Dear, one of the most promising conductors on the international scene, and the name of violinist Hana Chang is also worth remembering. This is the music of the future. And it sounds spectacular.

Snow sparkles in the pale winter sun, a horse-drawn sleigh glides through a light birch forest. Ice flowers grow on the window pane, while the samovar boils in the room. Tchaikovsky, with his First Symphony, makes a atmospheric declaration of love to the famous-infamous Russian winter with all its manifestations. In addition, two completely different but equally fascinating piano concertos are heard: Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto bursts with energy and sophistication. It is a youthful work full of spirit and shows Prokofiev as a true virtuoso of the piano. On the other hand, Ravel's Piano Concerto "for the left hand" is characterized by darker tones and was written for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in World War I. It is so cleverly composed that as a listener, one does not realize that in this almost 20-minute concert, piano and orchestra only play together for six minutes. A challenge for our Artist in Residence, who once again can demonstrate the full range of his abilities.
