The string quartet is considered the pinnacle of chamber music – and we can experience why this is so at performances by the Quatuor Ébène: In around two decades, an ensemble has grown that not only plays in the premier league of international quartets, but also regularly leaves audiences breathless with its unconditional courage to take risks and the intensity of its interpretations. Even supposedly well-known repertoire sounds refreshingly new and excitingly different with the Quatuor Ébène. For example, Joseph Haydn, who is considered the inventor of the genre. The program features one of the Viennese classic's late quartets, the String Quartet in G major, Op. 76 No. 1, in which he bundled all his achievements in this field, as a kind of legacy. The bar was thus set high for subsequent generations of composers, a fact that Johannes Brahms also felt: he spent around 20 years exploring the genre before presenting his first quartets to the public with Opus 51. Framed by the two German-speaking composers, the only string quartet by the Frenchman Maurice Ravel can be heard, which is full of wonderful sound effects.

The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. As one of the world's most sought-after young artists, he champions the composers of his Scandinavian homeland. He recorded the album "Nordic Rhapsody" with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, on which the two immerse themselves entirely in the Nordic soundscape, sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes profoundly. Piano virtuoso Javier Perianes, praised by Gramophone for his “infallible ear for style, atmosphere and colour” returns to perform Nights in the Gardens of Spain, evoking Falla’s beloved Andalusia with its mysterious, fragrant beauty, strumming guitars, flamenco rhythms and dancing melodies. Our rich, Spanish-flavored concert culminates in Rapsodie Espagnole, Ravel’s orchestral masterpiece, showing him as a master of instrumental color. Its four sections are vivid echoes of the sounds and dances of Spain, and its final movement, the sultry “Feria” (“The Fair”), punctuated by castanets, is ablaze in a riot of colors. In between, it’s the zesty suite from The Three-Cornered Hat, replete with sounds of stamping feet, timpani drumming and castanets clicking out infectious rhythms.

2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's birth. Fittingly, the program presents a selection of works in which we encounter typical elements of Ravel's sensuous and sophisticated music: Effective virtuosity characterizes the popular "Tzigane," spectacular for the audience, yet highly demanding for the performers, a "virtuoso piece in the style of a Hungarian rhapsody," as the composer himself put it. In "La Valse," Ravel lets the musical worlds of Viennese waltzes and French Impressionism collide, while the second movement of his second violin sonata is inspired by the then-new and exciting jazz.

Marianna Shirinyan is the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra's Artist in Residence – and we're celebrating that with an entire concert featuring only piano. Because the piano can do it all: “The piano is a percussion instrument, it's a string instrument – ​​and it's a singing instrument; the piano can sing,” says Marianna Shirinyan. “As pianists, we are incredibly rich. A lifetime is not enough to play the music that has been written for our instrument.”

Trio Azura was founded in 2022 at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. The ensemble consists of Canadian violinist Duncan McDougall, South Korean cellist Yejin Hong, and Chinese pianist Yanfeng (Tony) Bai. They are the Ensemble in Residence at Colburn, studying under faculty members Jonathan Brown, Fabio Bidini, Martin Beaver, and Clive Greensmith. The Trio won the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the 51st Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In addition, they received the Lift Every Voice Prize for the best performance of a work by an underrepresented composer, as well as the Horszowski Trio Prize. They are also prize winners at the Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China.

The second symphony concert, in which the symphony orchestra performs Joseph-Maurice Ravel's "Kaddish" – a setting of the most important prayer in Judaism – oscillates between major and minor, hard and soft, exhilaration and sadness on the occasion of November 9th. Also featured is Antonín Dvořák's now-famous Cello Concerto in B minor, which the composer created under the influence of great grief for his childhood sweetheart, Josefine. A fluctuation between major and minor, tension and relaxation, characterizes Johannes Brahms's Third Symphony. "... all movements seem to be cast from one mold, a heartbeat, each movement a jewel!" praised Clara Schumann in 1884.

In this Ravel year, we're collaborating with one of Germany's most prominent young pianists, Alexander Krichel, who will be making his debut with the Beethoven Orchestra in Koblenz. Incidentally, after pushing the Koblenz stage of the Rhein-Mosel-Halle to its limits with works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss over the past two seasons, we're demonstrating our orchestra's virtuosity and joy of playing this time with a concentrated, classical orchestra!

In the second part of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Artist in Residence, we meet the British conductor Nicolas Collon and the Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling, who, together with the Radio Symphony Orchestra, perform Salonen's great inspiration, Maurice Ravel's song cycle Shéhérazade with text from One Thousand and One Nights. Additionally, the Swedish premiere of Salonen's piece Gemini for large orchestra, followed by Witold Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra. The concert begins with Ravel's five pieces for children, Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose Tales).

Following his enthusiastic reception at the 2024 Virée classique summer concert, the talented oud player Joseph Tawadros makes his grand return to the OSM for two extraordinary concerts. He will be performing a dynamic piece inspired by the melodic modes of the Middle East, known as maqams, offering a vibrant and energetic musical experience. This powerful composition pairs seamlessly with the rhythmic drive of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, promising an evening filled with electrifying rhythms.

It's virtuosic, swinging, and shimmering in every tonal palette – there's just one catch: Ravel's Piano Concerto in D major can only be played with one hand! Anna Vinnitskaya is one of the few pianists to have this exceptional work in her repertoire. A stroke of luck for the Hamburg audience! And a homecoming for the Hamburg piano professor, who has found her home in the Hanseatic city since studying at the local music academy – and from there has conquered the piano stages of the world.
