“Vivacious, funny, heroic, eloquent, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and wholly irresistible” – this was a critic’s verdict on Anders Hillborg’s Piano Concerto No. 2 after its world premiere in San Francisco in October 2023 with Emanuel Ax and Esa-Pekka Salonen: “You can’t help but love the results.” Now, this 22-minute “fascinating ball of fun,” written specifically for Ax, will be performed again by Ax and Salonen along with the BRSO. The work is flanked by Ravel’s harmonically refined, rhythmically sensuous, and melodically captivating Le Tombeau de Couperin, which is dedicated to the great French Baroque harpsichordist François Couperin, and Hector Berlioz’s aesthetically uncompromising Symphonie fantastique, whose premiere in 1830 led some to suspect that Berlioz had gone mad, while others heralded him as an icon of modern music.

1879 – 1899 – 1919: Three compositions from three eras, exactly 20 years apart. But that's not the only thing that connects them. All are closely linked to very specific individuals. With Le Tombeau de Couperin, Maurice Ravel creates a musical monument to one of the greatest composers of the French Baroque – François Couperin. In his Enigma Variations, Edward Elgar portrays friends and companions. But who lies behind these musical character studies was a mystery for a long time. That has long been revealed, but the magic remains. And Brahms's only violin concerto would be unthinkable without Joseph Joachim. The star violinist not only advised Brahms, he wrestled with him over every note. The result: one of the most popular works in violin literature. At the helm is Finnegan Downie Dear, one of the most promising conductors on the international scene, and the name of violinist Hana Chang is also worth remembering. This is the music of the future. And it sounds spectacular.

Snow sparkles in the pale winter sun, a horse-drawn sleigh glides through a light birch forest. Ice flowers grow on the window pane, while the samovar boils in the room. Tchaikovsky, with his First Symphony, makes a atmospheric declaration of love to the famous-infamous Russian winter with all its manifestations. In addition, two completely different but equally fascinating piano concertos are heard: Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto bursts with energy and sophistication. It is a youthful work full of spirit and shows Prokofiev as a true virtuoso of the piano. On the other hand, Ravel's Piano Concerto "for the left hand" is characterized by darker tones and was written for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in World War I. It is so cleverly composed that as a listener, one does not realize that in this almost 20-minute concert, piano and orchestra only play together for six minutes. A challenge for our Artist in Residence, who once again can demonstrate the full range of his abilities.

Born into a family of musicians in Munich, her career began at an early age. Her breakthrough came at the latest with numerous prizes at the Sarasate, Paganini and Tchaikovsky competitions, which quickly took her to the world's most important stages as a soloist. As a soloist and chamber musician, Yuki Manuela Janke also inspires as concertmaster of the most traditional orchestras. Her interpretation of Richard Strauss' "Heldenleben" in the Golden Hall in Vienna with the Staatskapelle Dresden and Christian Thielemann attracted particular attention.

The string quartet is considered the pinnacle of chamber music – and we can experience why this is so at performances by the Quatuor Ébène: In around two decades, an ensemble has grown that not only plays in the premier league of international quartets, but also regularly leaves audiences breathless with its unconditional courage to take risks and the intensity of its interpretations. Even supposedly well-known repertoire sounds refreshingly new and excitingly different with the Quatuor Ébène. For example, Joseph Haydn, who is considered the inventor of the genre. The program features one of the Viennese classic's late quartets, the String Quartet in G major, Op. 76 No. 1, in which he bundled all his achievements in this field, as a kind of legacy. The bar was thus set high for subsequent generations of composers, a fact that Johannes Brahms also felt: he spent around 20 years exploring the genre before presenting his first quartets to the public with Opus 51. Framed by the two German-speaking composers, the only string quartet by the Frenchman Maurice Ravel can be heard, which is full of wonderful sound effects.

As part of his project to write ‘six sonatas for diverse instruments’, Debussy wrote the Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp in 1915, immediately creating a new classic instrumental combination. The programme also includes Ibert’s homage to the Debussy trio and Ravel’s Sonatine, skilfully arranged for the same forces.

The young Swedish-Norwegian violinist Johan Dalene has long demonstrated that virtuoso violin music is also at home in Northern Europe. As one of the world's most sought-after young artists, he champions the composers of his Scandinavian homeland. He recorded the album "Nordic Rhapsody" with pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, on which the two immerse themselves entirely in the Nordic soundscape, sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes profoundly. He also presented the violin concerto by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen at his acclaimed Elbphilharmonie concert last year.

Piano virtuoso Javier Perianes, praised by Gramophone for his “infallible ear for style, atmosphere and colour” returns to perform Nights in the Gardens of Spain, evoking Falla’s beloved Andalusia with its mysterious, fragrant beauty, strumming guitars, flamenco rhythms and dancing melodies. Our rich, Spanish-flavored concert culminates in Rapsodie Espagnole, Ravel’s orchestral masterpiece, showing him as a master of instrumental color. Its four sections are vivid echoes of the sounds and dances of Spain, and its final movement, the sultry “Feria” (“The Fair”), punctuated by castanets, is ablaze in a riot of colors. In between, it’s the zesty suite from The Three-Cornered Hat, replete with sounds of stamping feet, timpani drumming and castanets clicking out infectious rhythms.

2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's birth. Fittingly, the program presents a selection of works in which we encounter typical elements of Ravel's sensuous and sophisticated music: Effective virtuosity characterizes the popular "Tzigane," spectacular for the audience, yet highly demanding for the performers, a "virtuoso piece in the style of a Hungarian rhapsody," as the composer himself put it. In "La Valse," Ravel lets the musical worlds of Viennese waltzes and French Impressionism collide, while the second movement of his second violin sonata is inspired by the then-new and exciting jazz.

Pianist, vocalist, and Hancher’s composer-in-residence Gabriel Kahane joins the vibrant Attacca Quartet for a performance which employs Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major as a scaffolding. The artists, who will also spend significant time in residency with University of Iowa School of Music students, will end the program with a new set of songs written for this occasion.

Maurice Ravel is one of the most creative, detailed, and skilled composers in history. In the French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet we find talent in a similar vein: a musician of inexhaustible imagination, drive, and virtuosity. Bavouzet brings to CMS a great pianistic feat dedicated to Ravel’s complete major works for solo piano. This recital will go down in Lincoln Center history as a landmark artistic achievement.

The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra is the oldest continuously operating orchestra in the state of Oregon. Because the piano can do it all: “The piano is a percussion instrument, it's a string instrument – ​​and it's a singing instrument; the piano can sing,” says Marianna Shirinyan. “As pianists, we are incredibly rich. Trio Azura was founded in 2022 at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. The ensemble consists of Canadian violinist Duncan McDougall, South Korean cellist Yejin Hong, and Chinese pianist Yanfeng (Tony) Bai. They are the Ensemble in Residence at Colburn, studying under faculty members Jonathan Brown, Fabio Bidini, Martin Beaver, and Clive Greensmith. The Trio won the Grand Prize and Gold Medal at the 51st Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In addition, they received the Lift Every Voice Prize for the best performance of a work by an underrepresented composer, as well as the Horszowski Trio Prize. They are also prize winners at the Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China.

Its magic lies in its subtle distance: sounds like fleeting scents, shimmering plays of color, transparency, and rhythmic precision create soundscapes of enchanting beauty. In this spirit, André Caplet's delicate cantata "Tout est lumière" resonates, as does Ernest Chausson's heartfelt "Poème" and Maurice Ravel's concert rhapsody "Tzigane" – masterfully interpreted by Tianwa Yang.

The second symphony concert, in which the symphony orchestra performs Joseph-Maurice Ravel's "Kaddish" – a setting of the most important prayer in Judaism – oscillates between major and minor, hard and soft, exhilaration and sadness on the occasion of November 9th. Also featured is Antonín Dvořák's now-famous Cello Concerto in B minor, which the composer created under the influence of great grief for his childhood sweetheart, Josefine. A fluctuation between major and minor, tension and relaxation, characterizes Johannes Brahms's Third Symphony. "... all movements seem to be cast from one mold, a heartbeat, each movement a jewel!" praised Clara Schumann in 1884.
