In modern times, "Cenerentola" evokes the wondrous realm of childhood. Yet, Rossini and Ferretti aimed to tone down the fairy tale elements in their opera. I’ve allowed for a touch of enchantment, transforming the guardian Alidoro into an all-knowing demigod puppeteer of our narrative.
Alidoro will initiate the tale by opening a grand scenic book marked "Cenerentola" and turn its pages through the unfolding scenes, conjuring brooms and carriages, even puppeteering the characters during the complex "Questo è un nodo avviluppato."
The costumes blur the lines between the 18th and 19th centuries, contrasting the old, embodied by Don Magnifico, with the new in Don Ramiro, leaping into Sun King-style extravagance with Dandini.
Working with Rossini always inspires me to craft a choreography that echoes the opera's musical structure. "Cenerentola" especially lends itself to playful and nearly surreal moments, like the brilliantly conceived end of the first act.

Figaro! Figaro! FIGARO! Based on a play called Le Barbier de Séville by French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais, this is the first of three plays about a character called Figaro. Silliness ensues through a tale of bribery, deception, disguise, and of course, true love when Figaro plays matchmaker for his former employer and assists Count Almaviva in winning the heart of Rosina and freeing her from her lecherous guardian, Dr Bartolo.

This sparkling comedy of intrigue, directed by Cecilia Stinton and conducted by Charlotte Corderoy, promises to be a highlight of the 2024 season, featuring a tale told with style and panache. The story follows the clever Figaro, the barber of Seville, as he becomes a puppet-master to ensure the young Count Almaviva wins the hand of Rosina, thwarting her wedding to the elderly Doctor Bartolo. The opera is renowned for its inventive arias and ensembles, offering a prequel to Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro."

Paul Grant stars in the title role, with Elgan Llŷr Thomas as Almaviva and Heather Lowe as Rosina. The cast also includes Stephen Gadd as the conniving Doctor Bartolo and operatic superstar Janis Kelly making her company debut as Bartolo’s dust-allergic housekeeper, Berta. The production features the City of London Sinfonia and the Opera Holland Park Chorus, sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Performances are scheduled for multiple dates in June, starting from the 4th, with a special Young Artist’s performance on the 14th and a Discovery Matinee on the 16th, designed to welcome newcomers to opera in a relaxed environment. Taking place within the Inner Temple Parliament Chamber, the programme centres on the Parisian salons of the 19th century. Featuring newly-restored, rarely – if ever – performed songs by Donizetti from his years in Paris, the programme is completed with selections by Donizetti’s contemporaries. Including several songs composed by women, Ledoux and Tilbrook recreate the experience of a musical soirée.

The grand opening of the anniversary edition kicks off with the first of three concerts by this year’s Gstaad Conducting Academy: it offers a sneak peek into the creative process of young conductors, who, in their inaugural week, collaborate with a carefully chosen selection from the outstanding Gstaad Festival Orchestra. In a chamber orchestra setting, these accomplished conductors, who emerged victorious among approximately 200 competitors during the application phase, will delve into a varied repertoire featuring excerpts from Beethoven’s symphonies, overtures and the dazzling “Rococo Variations” by Peter Tchaikovsky. The latter will be brought to life by cellist Christopher Jepson, who has been a steadfast soloist with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra since its inception. Make sure not to miss the second part of this week on August 9th at the Saanen Church, where the captivating Menuhin’s Heritage Artist Lucienne Renaudin Vary will grace the stage with her trumpet.

Where love is concerned, too much is not even enough. Rosina is young, clever, and wealthy, but her greedy guardian desires her and her fortune for himself. Using her wits to outsmart him and find her true love, she enlists Figaro, the mischievous and well-connected local barber, who has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Plans go awry (resulting in several close shaves) against the backdrop of Gioachino Rossini’s iconic score as romance and a little old-fashioned trickery combine in one of the best-loved comedies of all time.
