Takács Quartet

As the world-renowned Takács Quartet enters its 49th season, the ensemble is excited to bring a new work written for the quartet by Phoenix composer Nokuthula Ngwenyama, a co-commission from nine major U.S. concert series. Quartet members Edward Dusinberre (violin), Harumi Rhodes (violin), Richard O’Neill (viola), and András Fejér (cello) will perform Ngwenyama’s The Natural World, bookended by Haydn’s String Quartet in B Flat, op. 76 no. 4, “Sunrise” and Beethoven’s String Quartet no. 8 in E Minor, op. 59, no. 2, a glorious slow movement composed while Beethoven contemplated the starry night sky.

The Grammy winning Takács Quartet, "simply the best I have heard in concert" (The Guardian), returns to Shriver Hall with a program inspired by the natural world. A premiere by Nokuthula Ngwenyama, an American composer of Zimbabwean-Japanese heritage, is bookended by Haydn and Beethoven's Op. 59, No. 2 Quartet, conceived as the composer gazed at the stars contemplating the harmony of the spheres.

The Music Academy’s brilliant fellows join internationally acclaimed soprano Ana María Martínez and the Takács Quartet in a performance including works from Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Johannes Brahms to Héctor Campos Parsi and Federico Moreno Torroba. The world-renowned Takács Quartet is now entering its forty-eighth season. Edward Dusinberre, Harumi Rhodes (violins), Richard O’Neill (viola) and András Fejér (cello) are excited about the 2022-2023 season that begins with a tour of Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea and includes the release of two new cds for Hyperion Records. A disc of Haydn’s opp. 42, 77 and 103 is followed by the first recording of an extraordinary new work written for the Takács by Stephen Hough, Les Six Rencontres, presented with quartets by Ravel and Dutilleux.
