Die Fledermaus ("The Bat") is a comic operetta by Johann Strauss II about revenge, mistaken identities, and romantic deceptions that unfold at a grand masquerade ball on New Year's Eve. Dr. Falke orchestrates a revenge plot against his friend, Eisenstein, who once left him drunk and humiliated in a bat costume. The elaborate plan involves Eisenstein unwittingly flirting with his own disguised wife, Rosalinde, while she is also in disguise, and their maid, Adele, aspiring to a career in acting. The night culminates with the characters in prison, where their secrets are revealed, and everything is eventually, and humorously, blamed on the champagne.

Pia Amofa-Antwi (known from "Pia and the Wild Nature") sets out on a special mission and ends up in Christmas-time Vienna 200 years ago, the home of composer and conductor Johann Strauss. He was a true pop star in his day. He composed waltzes, mazurkas, and polkas like an assembly line. Waltzes and waffles – that's how you get through the Christmas season in Vienna. And, of course, Christmas carols are part of it! That's when Pia needs some backup: a hearty sing-along is the order of the day!

We are absolutely delighted to perform for you the world première of a new composition by Dominic McGonigal — ‘Sunset at Sea’. Dominic’s work has been described as having “great textures and a perfect sense of spacing and pacing” and his ‘Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight’ recently won the Palimpsest Competition at Canterbury Cathedral.

After training as a chorister, Dominic read music at King’s College, Cambridge where he sang bass in King’s Chapel Choir. He found his voice as a composer with his 'Missa Et Incarnatus Est', a large work for 8-part choir, soloists and small orchestra. These days he combines a career in the music business with performing and conducting, including appointments as musical director of COMA Voices, Stoneleigh Choral Society, the Church of St Anselm & St Cecilia in Holborn, Opera Spezzata, EJMS Big Band and St Giles Consort …. and as for this piece, you’ll just have to come and hear it for yourself.

Johann Strauss II, the legendary Viennese Waltz King, was born in Vienna 200 years ago in 1825. However, he died a German, namely a citizen of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Out of love for Adele, the Imperial and Royal Court Ball music director renounced his Austrian citizenship and converted from Catholicism to Lutheranism – and this only because the Pope did not annul the Catholic marriage between Strauss and his second wife, Lilli. As an art connoisseur, Duke Ernst II gladly opened the doors to celebrity and was willing to make Strauss "his" citizen. Following naturalization, the Strauss couple were married in the court chapel of Ehrenburg Palace. In gratitude, Strauss dedicated the polka française "Neues Leben" (New Life) to the Duke. The anniversary concert "Straussiana" will feature works by Strauss's contemporaries, admirers, and the master himself. Of course, his non-blood-related namesake, Richard Strauss, who was himself a master of the late Romantic waltz, will also be featured. Star cellist Alexey Stadler will open his residency with "Don Quixote," a tone poem on a theme of chivalric character.

Eisenstein prefers to follow the advice of his friend Dr. Falke and have a good time before starting his prison sentence - and thus falls into a net of intrigue in which quite a few honorable personalities stand to lose their good reputation.
