This dynamic and inspiring self-conducted string orchestra, known as the flagship performing entity of the Sphinx Organization, is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Comprising some of the nation’s top young Black and Latinx professional musicians, Sphinx Virtuosi serves as a cultural and diversity ambassador across the United States and abroad.

The concert will take place at the Orchestral Music Venetian Theater at 4:00pm, with a special pre-concert conversation with members of Sphinx Virtuosi at 3:00pm. The program features music by some of today’s most compelling Black and Latinx composers, including Quenton Xavier Blache, Javier Favias, Andrea Casarrubios, Adolphus Hailstork, Jessie Montgomery, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson.

Seating options include general admission with premium reserved seating available, as well as Garden Listening tickets for a more casual concert environment. Garden Listening tickets are $20, free for Members and children under 18, allowing you to enjoy the concert broadcast with audio only on Friends Field.

Twins often have uncanny similarities — Harper and Cole Randolph, for example, share exceptional musical talent. They picked up instruments during kindergarten, and their paths diverged only slightly: cellist Cole studied math, music performance, and economics at the University of Wisconsin before joining the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, while violist Harper earned her music degree from the University of Michigan and was awarded third place at the 25th Annual Sphinx Competition, Senior Division. The Randolph twins will share something else at Festival Napa Valley — the performance stage for this Bouchaine Young Artist concert.

After our first performance together back in 2019 and a solo performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the MSO, Thomas Mesa returns as we collaborate once again in a program of organ and cello music. Mr. Mesa and I will both perform works by women composers, such as Nadia Boulanger’s gorgeous Trois Pièces, as well as a solo cello work written for him by Spanish composer Andrea Casarrubios. We will close this exciting evening with a commissioned work written for the two of us, Daniel Ficarri’s Sonata in C minor for Organ and Cello, which was inspired by our first performance at Overture Hall. Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa, a recipient of the 2023 Sphinx Medal of Excellence Award and winner of several prestigious competitions, teams up with the talented pianist Michelle Cann to perform works from their debut album "Our Stories." This album aims to highlight the voices of composers traditionally underrepresented in classical music. The program will feature two significant sonatas from the early 20th century by Debussy and Shostakovich, as well as pieces by Nadia Boulanger, Kevin Day, and Andrea Casarrubios.

Tommy Mesa has captivated audiences with solo appearances alongside major orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Michelle Cann, a Curtis Institute of Music graduate, has an impressive performance history, having debuted with orchestras like The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra. She currently holds the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music.
