Experience the grandeur of classical music at the Winspear Centre with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra's captivating performance of "Beethoven, Liszt & Piano." Hindemiths Sonate für vier Hörner reizt die klanglichen Möglichkeiten des Hornquartetts aus, zumal der Komponist mit komplexen Harmonien und dichter Polyphonie die Klangfarbe des Instruments besonders betont. Das Horn gesellt sich auch zu einem Trio des Beethoven-Schülers Carl Czerny, das zeigt, dass der Komponist für mehr als nur geläufige pianistische Fingerübungen steht. Dvořáks F-Dur-Streichquartett ist das Parallelwerk zur Sinfonie »Aus der Neuen Welt«. Mehr noch als in dieser ungleich bekannteren Neunten verknüpft Dvořák in diesem Quartett Elemente aus Spiritual und amerikanischer Musik mit seiner unverkennbar böhmischen Melodik.

The audience at this chamber music evening can enjoy works featuring unusual combinations of instruments. Hindemith’s Sonata for Four Horns exploits the tonal possibilities of this grouping; indeed, the composer’s use of complex harmonies and dense polyphony highlights the instrument’s unique timbre. The horn also appears in a trio by Beethoven’s pupil Carl Czerny, confirming that the famed composer of pianistic finger exercises was capable of more substantial fare. Dvořák’s String Quartet in F major is the companion piece to the symphony »From the New World«. The Czech master’s integration of American spiritual and folk music with his unmistakably Bohemian melodies is even stronger here than in the more celebrated Ninth.

The Consone Quartet are much loved regular visitors to Perth Concert Hall. As well as a composer, Czerny was a virtuoso pianist who premiered Beethoven’s first piano concerto. Smetana’s quartet is a wonderfully rich outpouring of rich themes and deep Bohemian sentiment.

The wind quintet has the challenge, as well as the benefit, of bringing together five distinct instruments to explore multiple blends of timbres. Klughardt's work is a beautiful example of great writing for each of the five, and the addition of piano in Louise Farenc's Sextet provides expanded sonic dimensions and is a true tour de force for the pianist. The program is balanced with smaller combinations featuring double reeds, the regal sound of the horn, and upper winds.

4th  Chamber Concert

The classic trio line-up actually consists of violin, cello, and piano. When Robert August Kahn presented his publisher with a Trio Serenade for oboe, horn, and piano, the publisher insisted on a version for a standard piano trio. The composer subsequently created no fewer than nine different versions of the serenade, each with its own distinctive sound. In the Profile concerto, it is the sometimes warm and full, sometimes clear and metallic sound of the horn that joins the piano and violin. We also hear this sound in the trio by Frédéric Duvernoy, one of the most famous French horn players around 1800, and in the "Premier Grand Trio" by Carl Czerny. All three offer the opportunity to encounter rarely performed but highly charming works.
