The classic trio line-up actually consists of violin, cello, and piano. When Robert August Kahn presented his publisher with a Trio Serenade for oboe, horn, and piano, the publisher insisted on a version for a standard piano trio. The composer subsequently created no fewer than nine different versions of the serenade, each with its own distinctive sound.
