Just as every new year has its January 1st, (almost) every opera has an overture: sometimes as a turbulent introduction to a comedy full of intrigue and passion, as in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Figaro", sometimes as a departure into an adventure fairy tale full of magic, as in Mikhail Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla". The Duisburg Philharmonic's salon orchestra welcomes the year 2025 with a selection of overtures that is as varied as it is virtuoso, mixing lively sounds in three-quarter time. "Everything is a waltz" is not only the motto of Johann Strauss and his brother Josef, but also in Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" from 1819 - the epitome of Biedermeier waltz bliss.

Contemporary music and melodic bliss need not be a contradiction, as Ai-Ling Chang, Juan Guzmán Esteban and Wan-Yen Li prove with four works by modern composers: J. Lee Graham, for example, creates a lot of romantic sound magic in the slow movement of his trio and revels in magical harmonies. And Charles Koechlin's "4 Petites pièces" are also deeply romantic in their expression, although they were written in the 20th century. Much like Eric Ewazen's horn trio, which is a homage to the trio of the romantic Brahms. Charles Wuorinen, on the other hand, plays inventively and happily with the musical ideas in his horn trio, showing a good dose of humor - and placing quite virtuoso demands on the horn player's lips.
