Beethoven’s glorious Symphony No. 9 and the famous “Ode to Joy” is a call for the triumph of universal brotherhood over desperation.  Delta David Gier pairs this message with Reena Esmail’s “My Sister’s Voice” and a world premiere by Niloufar Iravani.

Long known as a work calling for humanity to unite as “brothers,” Beethoven’s mighty Ninth Symphony has stirred whole societies to lofty ideals since its premiere in 1824. Los Angeles based composer Reena Esmail epitomizes the many facets of being and having a sister in her radiant work that joins Western Classical Music and Hindustani Classical Music traditions. The California Lutheran University Choir and Pepperdine University Concert Choir join leading vocal soloists under the direction of Michael Christie.

Join us at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley! Let your inner child come out to play with Ravel's Mother Goose Suite and a reimagined, uniquely Berkeley retelling of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, featuring the remarkable illustrator and graphic journalist Wendy MacNaughton as our narrator. We're also delighted to feature Reena Esmail's Meri Sakhi Ki Avaaz (My Sister's Voice) for Hindustani singer, soprano, and orchestra, which takes listeners on a cross-cultural journey that explores family and community across the globe.
