American composer Jake Heggie’s masterpiece, the most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years, has its highly anticipated Met premiere, in a haunting new production by Ivo van Hove. Based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer, Dead Man Walking matches the high drama of its subject with Heggie’s beautiful and poignant music and a brilliant libretto by Tony and Emmy Award–winner Terrence McNally.

Golaud, grandson of King Arkel, falls in love and marries the mysterious Mélisande. His half-brother Pelléas falls for Mélisande as well. It’s a love triangle of royal proportions.

Not seen here since 1977, Debussy’s symbolist masterpiece will be directed and designed by Netia Jones, who recently directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She presents us with a dreamlike and meditative world, which seems of no time and of all time. Four thrilling singers will have their SFO debuts this summer including baritone Huw Montague Rendall and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey.

Debussy's sensual, exquisitely nuanced score casts a hypnotic spell, capturing an enigmatic dream world where forbidden love blossoms.
Conducted by James Conlon, this fascinating lyric masterpiece stars two riveting young performers, soprano Sydney Mancasola and baritone Will Liverman, as the doomed lovers, and Kyle Ketelsen as the jealous prince. The magnificent Susan Graham makes her role debut as Geneviève, mother of the two rival brothers, and the legendary bass Ferruccio Furlanetto returns as King Arkel, the family patriarch unable to grasp the tragedy unfolding before him.

A Standing Witness is a monumental new collaboration between Grammy Award-winning composer Richard Danielpour and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove, created especially for the incomparable mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and the celebrated Music from Copland House Ensemble. The soaring music and probing poetry of this epic cycle for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble is a sweeping retrospective tracing enormous social, cultural, technological, and political upheavals in the U.S. since the watershed year of 1968. Rapturously received in premiere performances at the Kennedy Center, the University of Chicago, and elsewhere around the U.S., there is no more timely or provocative work for this pivotal moment in American history.

Called by Gramophone magazine as “America’s favorite mezzo,” and the New York Times as “an artist to treasure,” mezzo-soprano Susan Graham joins Maestro Gerard Schwarz and the Palm Beach Symphony to perform arias from Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro and Le Nozze di Figaro,” Lehár’s “The Merry Widow” and Berlioz’ “Les Troyens” as well as selections from The Great American Songbook. The program also features the Symphony performing Debussy’s sensual and evocative Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) and Shostakovich’s dramatic and powerful Symphony No. 10 in E Minor, Op. 93, created after Stalin’s death by the great composer whose career that Russian leader had nearly ended.

John Neumeier, the celebrated choreographer who made his LAO debut with Orpheus and Eurydice in 2018, returns to Los Angeles with one of his signature creations, a ballet that has been cheered by audiences throughout the world.
