Opera Parallèle returns to the Presidio Theatre to present the world premiere of a newly reimagined version of Doubt, the iconic story of suspicion, morality, and shifty power dynamics in a Catholic school. Adapted from John Patrick Shanley’s Oscar-nominated film and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this contemporary opera features an evocative score by Douglas J. Cuomo. Conceived by Brian Staufenbiel and conducted by Nicole Paiement, this striking new production focuses on the psychological tension between four central characters, creating an intimate, immersive experience. The design, inspired by a church, places the orchestra on stage, making them an active participant in the drama. This inventive, multi-sensory production invites you to step into the narrative as part of the “congregation,” blurring the lines between observer and participant, creating a gripping experience you won’t forget.

David & Jonathan is a French Baroque masterpiece that intertwines sacred drama with operatic splendor. This biblical tragedy tells the timeless story of war and how it pushes us to struggle with fate, loyalty, and the tragic conflict between love and duty. This rarely performed gem brings to life another side of David, whom we know to have slain Goliath, and the romantic love shared between him and Jonathan, son of King Saul. Charpentier’s expressive and lush harmonies pull us into the drama of the anguish of Saul, and the divine forces shaping all of their destinies.

The String and Piano Chamber Music degree and diploma programs are a year-round focus on chamber music, providing the same atmosphere of a summer festival. Performance opportunities are wide-ranging through workshops, masterclasses, and concerts for the public—all while playing regularly with acclaimed industry professionals and faculty. SFCM created the nation’s first graduate String and Piano Chamber Music program and the musical excellence continues to this day.

The String and Piano Chamber Music program is one of SFCM’s most selective. Intentionally small, the program allows for several talented individuals each year, meaning that students in the program enjoy unrivaled access to learn from and perform with top faculty and accomplished guest artists.

Chamber Music Students will experience high profile performance opportunities through SFCM’s unique Chamber Music Residency Series, giving members of the program the opportunity to intensely and perform closely with exciting and world renowned chamber musicians. Recent artists-in-residence include Marcy Rosen, Tessa Lark, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, and the Miro Quartet.

The festival begins on a celebratory note, connecting Joseph Haydn, the father of the Classical style, with the Baroque era’s greatest master, Johann Sebastian Bach. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, son of Johann Sebastian, composed his dashing A major Cello Concerto only three years after his father’s death, setting a new standard of instrumental brilliance. In Haydn’s dramatic cantata, the heroine Ariadne is abandoned during the night on the island of Naxos by her lover Theseus, whom she had saved from the Minotaur. Haydn’s ever popular C major Violin Concerto follows, and the evening closes with Johann Sebastian Bach’s secular cantata Be still, stop chattering (in essence, a short comic opera), which tells the humorous, cautionary tale of a young woman addicted to coffee.
