"Reference and contradiction" could be a pair of terms that could be used to describe both works in this program. In Kapustin's work, the tension lies in the fusion of classical form and jazz idiom. "Here, the classical element carries more weight for me. The jazz style is merely color," the composer said of his now famous String Quartet Op. 88. Béla Bartók's Piano Quintet, on the other hand, draws on two traditions: that of Hungarian folk music and the compositional style of Johannes Brahms. In contrast, the Hungarian composer's newly developed harmony already points to the stage work "Bluebeard's Castle," composed seven years later.

Kapustin’s Fourth Piano Concerto conjures up a great night at a jazz club, with a wild piano solo and a drum-kit. The last chamber music concert of 2025 will be full of folk rhythms, especially at the very end, thanks to Nikolai Kapustin’s lively Trio, Op. 86, which includes a jazzy flute part. The concert will also include works by Clara and Robert Schumann, to whom the entire 32nd season of the Chamber Music Series is dedicated.

Joshua Weilerstein makes his triumphant return to the Philharmonic in this musical postcard celebrating the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Three joyous works each cast a different light on the sights and sounds of the USA, culminating in a performance of Antonín Dvořák’s love letter to America – his ‘New World’ Symphony. One of the most beloved and enduring works in the orchestral repertoire, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 explores themes of identity, belonging, and the emotional pull of home.

An evening in the company of WA Mozart is an evening that enriches the soul to the very core of its DNA. In Mozart we find playful lightness and refined elegance in such abundance that we can hardly comprehend it – and then also the gravitas and emotional weight that comes from having been a professional musician and a sparkling genius since he learned to walk. Mozart loved the clarinet's dark-colored cousin, the basset horn, and tonight we will enjoy the fourth of his five moody divertimenti for three basset horns. Mozart's otherworldly beautiful quintet for piano and winds also dates from the first half of the 1780s, which he himself described in a letter to his father as "the best thing I have written in my life".
