Hearing Handel’s Messiah performed by choir, orchestra, and four vocal soloists is always a profound experience. It is Handel’s most famous work, filled with exquisite arias and magnificent choruses – including the celebrated Hallelujah chorus. In this performance, we hear the German-language version created nearly 50 years after the English original. By then, the Baroque era had given way to Classicism, and Mozart expanded the orchestration while making several minor adjustments in line with his own instincts and the musical ideals of his time.

The annual Passion Concert is a cherished tradition. Bach, like no other, expresses the essence of the Passion story through his music. The St John Passion is often referred to as his only opera, showcasing his unparalleled sense of theatricality in dramatic scenes, evident from the captivating opening chorus, Herr, unser Herrscher. This year, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra collaborates with conductor Daniel Reuss and Cappella Amsterdam, European leaders in their genre. Together, they present the powerful and inspiring Messiah story from John, featuring two of the world's finest vocalists: German tenor Werner Güra as the evangelist and Peter Harvey in the role of Christ.

Islandske Hugi Gudmundssons ”The Gospel of Mary” har allerede gjort sig bemærket som et nutidigt musikalsk og tekstligt banebrydende oratorium for sinfonietta, kor og sopransolist. Like Mozart, the Spanish composer Juan Arriaga died far too early. Yet he left behind a large body of excellent music, including several vocal works. In the two vocal works for tonight's concert, the dramatic cantata Herminie and an aria from the opera Medée , Arriaga shows himself to be a surprisingly mature composer, with impressive dramatic sense. The soloist is the Norwegian soprano Berit Nordbakken, one of the Nordic countries' foremost interpreters of early music.
