Friedrich Klinger’s play Sturm und Drang, which retrospectively gave its name to the emotionally turbulent movement that swept through literature, art and music in the 1760s and 1770s, was written 250 years ago in 1776. To mark this anniversary, Ian Page and The Mozartists present a characteristically dynamic and highly-charged programme, culminating with Haydn’s celebrated and darkly dramatic ‘Farewell’ Symphony.

Wigmore Hall

For a long time, he was completely forgotten: Joseph Martin Kraus, a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, and a significant composer of symphonies and lieder. Only in recent decades have his works been rediscovered; he left behind a remarkable musical oeuvre spanning virtually all genres: operas and ballets, sacred and secular vocal music, string quartets, and over a dozen symphonies.

Fateful

Bochumer Symphoniker

As a globally sought-after specialist and interpreter of early music, he regularly unearths pieces from the Baroque to the Bel Canto era: Attilio Cremonesi has compiled rarities from the 18th century for this program. From the so-called Age of Sensibility come the first examples of the emerging genre of symphony, whose development into the classical form in Haydn can be observed in this concert. These are complemented by artful concert arias, sung by soprano Josefine Mindus from the music theater ensemble.
