For a long time, he was completely forgotten: Joseph Martin Kraus, a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, and a significant composer of symphonies and lieder. Only in recent decades have his works been rediscovered; he left behind a remarkable musical oeuvre spanning virtually all genres: operas and ballets, sacred and secular vocal music, string quartets, and over a dozen symphonies.
