Prompted by the horror of the frequent terrorist attacks, Fazil Say's cello concerto "Never Give Up" was created as a "cry for freedom and peace." Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas performed the solo part at the premiere in 2018. Rhythm and percussion, great drama and expressiveness, but also experimental sounds characterize this concerto. In the middle movement, one can sense allusions to machine gun fire and human screams. The finale, however, is full of hope for the future – with hints of birdsong, ocean waves, and peaceful Turkish dances.

Not without a clarinet

The "Organ Symphony" is one of France's most important symphonies. The work's name, incidentally, does not originate from the composer – Saint-Saëns preferred to call it a "symphony with organ." The organ is "merely" one timbre among others – it is sparse, but its impact is all the more powerful. A piano duo is also part of the orchestra. While the "Organ Symphony" is not a religious composition, the melody of the "Dies Irae" nevertheless runs through the entire work. The two gigantic sections – approximately 20 and 15 minutes long respectively – contain the usual four symphony movements. Saint-Saëns considered this (his last) symphony to be his magnum opus.

Jiwon Kim and Peter Ernst explore the traces of Spanish music in their program ANDALUZA. They encountered not only the raw, flamenco-inspired compositions of Manuel de Falla, but also the courtly serenata of Joaquin Rodrigo and the salonesque dances of the Catalan composer Enrique Granados.

It was conductor Mariss Jansons who asked Jörg Widmann to compose a concert overture for the performance of Beethoven's 7th and 8th Symphonies. So Widmann wrote for a similar ensemble to Beethoven's at the time, drawing on the timbres and explosiveness of the 7th Symphony. However, the musical elements here appear torn apart – a Beethoven from the shredder. To recall the Seventh's original shock effect, Widmann also includes avant-garde scratching and crackling sounds. This "crazy overture" is great fun.

With momentum

The "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" was the breakthrough for Claude Debussy in 1894, both for musical Impressionism and modern music in general. For a "symphonic poem," the roughly ten-minute work is quite short. It is introduced by an ascending and descending flute melody and becomes the nucleus of the piece. What was new about it was the dissolution of conventional tonality. Debussy was inspired to create this by a Javanese gamelan orchestra he had heard at the Paris World's Fair in 1889, whose music "made our tonic and dominant appear like ghosts."

In 1896, on the 50th anniversary of his concerto debut, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote a final piano concerto for himself as a soloist. It is considered his "Egyptian" concerto because he supposedly composed it in Luxor on the Nile. Indeed, the second movement in particular draws inspiration from Egypt (a Nubian love song and the sounds of crickets and frogs on the Nile), but also influences from Spain and East Asia. The energetic third movement is also inspired by Saint-Saëns's frequent travels, namely by the sound of ships' steam engines. Yet the composer knows how to dress it all in melodic elegance.

Lili Boulanger was a versatile child prodigy. At 19, she became the first woman to win the Prix de Rome, France's highest composition award. Unfortunately, Boulanger was chronically ill and plagued by pain—she died at the early age of 24. "D'un soir triste" (One Sad Evening...) was one of her last compositions, a modern, fascinating sound sculpture, somber, dramatic, then mystically light. The composer was unable to write the work herself. She dictated it to her sister Nadia, who would become a famous piano and composition teacher.

Johannes Brahms's Trio in B major, Op. 8, is both the composer's earliest and latest piano trio. It exists in two completely different versions, from 1854 and 1889, although today the later version is generally considered "Opus 8." Brahms completed the original version of the trio in January 1854, three months after his first meeting with Robert Schumann in Düsseldorf and under the influence of the developing artistic friendship with his mentor. In later years, Brahms grew tired of his "loquacious" early work and finally subjected it to a revision in 1889 that included significant changes. The way in which the 53-year-old Brahms altered his own early work through radical interventions is one of the few cases of unrestrainedly open self-criticism by an artist. "As a whole, the new B major Trio is an incomparable testament to his artistic openness and honesty, with which he not only confesses but also shows us directly what he didn't do right in his youth," wrote Brahms's friend Eusebius Mandyczewski, librarian of the Friends of Music in Vienna.

The Five Pieces for String Quartet were the work with which Erwin Schulhoff achieved his breakthrough in Salzburg in 1924. The dedication to his French colleague Darius Milhaud reveals what he was aiming for: the concise brevity of the movements, the suite-like sequence, and the aphoristic treatment of the material. The "Five Pieces" are primarily rhythmically inspired, which is probably why one review described them as "nice and lively dance pieces." One should not be fooled by this pleasantness: Schulhoff experiments ingeniously with motivic, metrical, and harmonic forms.

In the middle of the 20th century

Goethe's 1789 play "Egmont" requires several musical interludes. In 1810, when the play was once again highly topical due to the War of Liberation against Napoleon, the Vienna Hofburg Theater commissioned Ludwig van Beethoven to compose new incidental music for "Egmont." Beethoven provided ten numbers (including two songs), the most famous of which is the overture. It essentially tells the entire piece in three parts—with the "Victory Symphony" at the end. A gripping, concentrated Beethoven orchestral work from the period between his 6th and 7th symphonies.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart received the commission for "Theatrical Director" from Emperor Joseph II on the occasion of a visit by the Dutch Governor-General. The idea of ​​writing a comedy about the theater and its stars supposedly originated with the emperor himself, in order to enhance the reputation of the German Singspiel. The musical portion of this one-act opera is relatively short at around twenty minutes; besides the overture, there are only four vocal numbers (an arietta, a rondo, a trio, and the final song), otherwise spoken dialogue predominates. It is primarily due to its many allusions to long-forgotten plays of the time that the overture has maintained its place in the concert hall.

Is there a more beautiful violin concerto than this one? The violinist Joseph Joachim, in any case, called Mendelssohn's E minor concerto the "most precious," the "heart jewel" among German violin concertos. Much of it was innovative at the time of its premiere (1845): that the violin (not the orchestra) takes on the major themes, that the solo cadenza comes in the middle of the first movement, that the movements flow into one another without a break. Later concertos were influenced in many ways by this—but Mendelssohn's beautiful melodies remained unrivaled.

"How can you say why you love something? You don't need reasons, you just love." Evgeny Kissin is irritated by the question of why he loves Dmitri Shostakovich. He owes this to his parents, who had a recording of his 1st Piano Concerto in their record cabinet. Young Evgeny fell in love with this music immediately. A love that continues to this day and that will shape both of the portrait artist's concerts at the Ruhr Piano Festival 2025 - the year that marks the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death.

Qigang Chen , born in China and coming to Europe in 1984, is considered the last student of Olivier Messiaen. In five very short movements, the orchestra portrays the "Five Elements" ("Wu Xing") according to Chinese philosophy: water, wood, fire, earth and metal - in that order. The wood and metal sound of the orchestral percussion plays an important role.

Myth and Nature

Many people - or should we say millions of people - know Hayato Sumino as Cateen, because under this artist or influencer name the pianist inspires a constantly growing online fan base for his art: people who otherwise don't have much to do with classical music. The young Japanese has been proving for years that he is also up to the demands of a "normal" concert career, for example with his victory at the PTNA piano competition in his home country in 2018 or his participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2021, which was closely followed by the media. As if these talents alone were not enough, Hayato Sumino also has a degree in engineering and is himself active as a composer and arranger. How does Mozart's "Turkish March", the third movement from the wonderful A major Sonata KV 331, sound when you chase it through all major and minor keys? In his 24 variations on this theme, Sumino provides the answer – and contrasts it with the lively arrangement of a Gershwin classic: “An American in Paris”, which also stops by Bochum for a quick visit.

Blechacz likes to be a little shy, much more so in conversation than with his instrument: "I would rather answer your questions with music than in an interview," he once told his journalist counterpart. So let's listen to him instead. For example, when he plays Chopin. He never teases anything salon-like out of this music; with him, this music does not sound like cuddly poetry. Blechacz shows its endangered elegance, its rough edges in a very small space. Where some of his colleagues try to explain Chopin with the help of the pedal, Blechacz exercises restraint with his right foot. As a result, his Chopin often sounds pleasantly unpadded, but shimmering and, when necessary, also irascible and dry. "Chopin has become a kind of life partner for me," he admits today. "In his music, I am completely at one with myself."

For the plot of “Tannhäuser” (1845), Richard Wagner drew on two different German legends. Central parts of this great romantic opera can already be heard in the approximately 13-minute overture: the Venusberg music from the first act, Tannhäuser’s ode to Venus from the second and the pilgrims’ chorus from the third act. This is “Tannhäuser” atmosphere in concentrated form.

Joseph Haydn lived in a dazzling era: together with Mozart and Beethoven, he ushered in the musical era of Viennese Classicism and is considered the founder of the classical symphony. His 77 years were filled with creative vitality and a passion for musical experimentation. Haydn spent most of his career in the service of the highly cultured and very wealthy Hungarian princely family Esterházy. At the family's three ancestral seats, Haydn was responsible both as a composer and as a performing musician for the direction of the permanent orchestra, for chamber music soirées and the summer opera, which also included the re-arranging and composing of operas. He had to deliver a huge number of commissioned works for events that followed one another almost seamlessly, but this did not depress him at all; on the contrary, it fired him up and, as numerous sources prove, filled him with happiness.

The Bochum Singer-Songwriter Contest is a competition for young talent for everyone - anyone from Bochum or anyone who has a specific connection to Bochum can take part. During the subsequent dance with a DJ, the Music Forum is transformed into the most unusual party location in Bochum.

“Nixon in China” was the first opera in the spirit of minimal music in 1987. Its composer John Adams, however, prefers to call himself a “maximalist” because he combines “minimalist” stylistic devices with many other things. He also used elements from his opera for the orchestral foxtrot “The Chairman Dances”. In the composer’s imagination, the Great Chairman Mao Zedong emerges from a picture portrait and dances several foxtrots with his wife – back to their shared past. Hollywood nostalgia is charmingly combined with insistent motor skills and a large percussion apparatus.

One day, the cheeky and naughty farm boy Nils is transformed into a gnome and, together with the white gander Marten, he joins a flock of wild geese and flies away. On this journey he experiences exciting adventures and discovers how beautiful his home country Sweden is. Will he manage to become a "normal" human boy again

The Bochum Symphony Orchestra commissions two or three compositions each year. This season, one of them is "Il Cenacolo" by the Bochum composer   Stefan Heucke . Heucke, with whom the orchestra has worked on and off for many years, was inspired to create this work by looking at Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper": "The great unity of the mural at first glance (almost everyone has the painting in their mind's eye in large) made me spontaneously think of the solo cello and 12 violins - a sonically extremely homogeneous line-up that, however, allows for the possibility of multi-coloured differentiation in detail."

50 years of Blaswerk

The old charcoal burner Jeromir and his son Josa are actually very happy with their lives. Unfortunately, Josa is too small and weak to continue his father's profession. But one day, Josa receives a magic violin as a gift. With it, he can make any listener either big and strong or very small. And with this violin, Josa sets off for the moon to prove that even small people can make a big difference.

Born in Germany, he moved to England in his late twenties, where he established himself as a British citizen. Although Handel is best known in the English-speaking world for his oratorios and orchestral works, he was primarily an opera composer and dominated the London opera scene for over two decades.

8th Bochum Singer Songwriter Contest

Great versatility

Noam Sheriff was one of Israel's most renowned composers. The appeal of his music lay primarily in the imaginative incorporation of Jewish and Middle Eastern sound elements into his music. In 1978, he wrote a work called "Tre'y-Assar" for the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, which incorporates traditional Jewish prayer melodies. Sheriff later developed this piece further for a string orchestra under the title "Prayers." The sequence imitates the prayer sequence in a synagogue.
