A little Italian boy is brought to France, enchants the king and has a stronger and more lasting influence on French musical life than any other: Jean-Baptiste Lully 's miraculous rise from an underage serf to "Conseiller secrétaire du roi" is not due to his musical talent. It is his dance numbers and parodies that enchant the future Sun King. He composes his own ballets and remains the Sun King's undisputed favorite composer for 25 years. He is the founder of the French national opera and writes the music for more than 50 stage works, as well as songs, motets and dances. His death is as dramatic as his life: during a rehearsal, the 55-year-old composer rams the heavy conductor's baton into his foot. The wound becomes infected and Lully, the dancer, dies because he refuses to have his foot amputated.

Joseph Haydn lived in a dazzling era: together with Mozart and Beethoven, he ushered in the musical era of Viennese Classicism and is considered the founder of the classical symphony. His 77 years were filled with creative vitality and a passion for musical experimentation. Haydn spent most of his career in the service of the highly cultured and very wealthy Hungarian princely family Esterházy. At the family's three ancestral seats, Haydn was responsible both as a composer and as a performing musician for the direction of the permanent orchestra, for chamber music soirées and the summer opera, which also included the re-arranging and composing of operas. He had to deliver a huge number of commissioned works for events that followed one another almost seamlessly, but this did not depress him at all; on the contrary, it fired him up and, as numerous sources prove, filled him with happiness.
